[–]DrGirlfriend 0 points1 point ago

I installed one of these in our building. It works great for AT&T.... Verizon, not so much

Need to buy some new Server Racks by blackmosssin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 6 points7 points ago

We use Dell racks. They work great with the Dell Ready Rail system, and also with the HP servers that we use. We also have Eaton PDUs and UPS's in them. They are a little pricy, however.

Two AT&T Microcells in one office by uncleskeletonin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 1 point2 points ago

We use a repeater system from Quantum Wireless. It is an antenna and booster system that retransmits the signal from the tower to inside our office. There are probably 50 phones on it and it works great.

You would be looking for CNA, Cisco Network Assistant. ASDM is only for ASA/Pix.

A programming example (with code snippet) in the fashion industry, as a response to "Please Don't Learn to Code" by danwinin programming

[–]DrGirlfriend 1 point2 points ago

You should use the Ruby CSV library.... it will eliminate several lines of code and make it easier to run through your Excel csv's

I recognize this is not the point, but as a non-professional programmer, I relish the opportunity to help others with their non-professional code.

Disaster Recovery Backup Solution? by AllisZeroin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 2 points3 points ago

Check out Unitrends. You could put in one device at your office and another in your datacenter. Backup to the one in your office and then have it replicate the changes to the one in the datacenter. Initial sync may consume a lot of bandwidth, but from then on, you should be golden.

3D render farm hardware/software suggestions... by guriboysfin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 1 point2 points ago

At my old gig, we managed our render queues with Rush ( http://seriss.com/rush/ ). It worked really well and the scripting interface allowed us to tie it into pretty much everything we did.

Our hardware was 36 blades in a blade rack from Verari (now known as Cirrascale). They all ran Opterons. We completed numerous 3d shots for several features while I was there (small operation, only 4 full time 3d artists and a couple 2D guys).

I have one from System76. It works pretty well. I also have a Dell Latitude E4100, and it took some doing, but it runs Ubuntu pretty well.

Newly coined manager. WTF do I do now? by djobouti_phatin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 6 points7 points ago

  • Reduce the amount of meetings as much as you can. The more time that is spent in meetings, the less time is spent on tasks.

  • Schedule annual or even bi-annual performance reviews where you honestly provide feedback.

  • Don't be an asshole; meaning, don't ask anyone to do anything that you yourself would not do. This is not to say don't delegate. See next..

  • Learn to delegate. Let your team handle their duties. You handle your team. I had a real hard time with this one for a while, where I would just do everything. This is a colossal waste of resources.

  • Try to get your company to sponsor outings at least twice a year for team-building or just blowing off steam. You can't be go-go-go all the time.

  • Relax. If you were chosen for management, then you likely showed something to those that chose you. It's hard to follow an uptight, stressed-out leader.

git-based fabric deploys are awesome by dbravenderin programming

[–]DrGirlfriend 2 points3 points ago

Why? With rsync+tarballs you do not get rollback in the event of deployment failure, whereas with systems like Fabric+Git and Capistrano, you do.

Failed drive while converting raid5 to raid6, then a hard reboot by Schnitzelnatorin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 1 point2 points ago

Looks like you hit a URE on a second drive. Since you were still a RAID5 at that point, your array may be toast. Are these SATA drives, by any chance?

Should I use MarkMonitor, CSC, Gandi.net, or Name.com? by ReedyCreekin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 0 points1 point ago

We just switched over to CSC a couple of months ago. They do a good job, in my opinion. We also looked at MarkMonitor, but they wanted something like $40K.

A little advice please. by tristanziemannin sysadmin

[–]DrGirlfriend 0 points1 point ago

I have an MIS degree. I am a Director of IT. The two statements do not necessarily correlate. I spent years at tech support, sysadmin, and senior sysadmin before becoming director. Do what interests you in school, make up for any deficiencies with practical experience.

Computer Science is not necessarily a degree in programming (more applied mathematics), whereas a degree in MIS is mostly concerned with the business aspects of IS. I took many ethics classes, philosophy classes, and business classes. I am happy with my decision, although in my environment (software development company), I wish I had taken the Comp Sci route.

I worked tech support for about 5 years, and then got hired as a sysadmin on a leap of faith. Everything worked out in the end.

As do we. I think it works really well, as long as users don't get tripped up when installing the local app.
