How to clean a couch from stains of wet dog and baby bottle spills, Microfiber couch, Please help by DAYNA08in Frugal

Do a spot check first, but I've had great results cleaning the arms of my microfiber couches with cheap generic disinfectant (dollar store version of lysol).

Spray on the stains, enough to saturate, then rub with a cloth to get the dirt and funk off. Our couch cushions have removable covers and I've taken them off and washed them in cold water on the gentle cycle then dried on low in the dryer. Worked great but I'm not sure if it's a universal thing that can be done with microfiber.

I've no idea about how to get the dog to mind or get rid of fleas, sorry. My kids are not allowed to drink anything but water in the living room

I guess so, I thought perhaps I was overlooking them but it's looking like I just never received any. I will try again tomorrow.

Could be a good way to see how much you'll actually use a warehouse club membership without a large commitment.

That's my canned chicken picture! It didn't kill me but it cost over five dollars.

They have them at Walgreens here, near the register.

My mom sends them from Germany, she just writes candy on the customs form. I've seen them for sale at a local Middle Eastern grocery of all places.

Price Check Experiment: Is Costco really worth it? by DivaLasDin Frugal

Their selection of kid's clothes is very limited but I've found a lot of bargains there like Hanna Anderson one piece jammies for $12. You're right about the women's section, it tends to skew towards older lady's styles, imo.

Costco isn't great if you need extended sizes. I need long/talls and it's rare that those are in stock. My husband has a 34 inch inseam and they only offer those on a limited number of waist sizes.

This is very true. I tend not to buy snack-y type foods at Costco because they are eaten so quickly by my family. We don't need to spend the money or eat that much junk. On the other hand, I find that as long as I have a plan, things like produce, meat and dry staple goods don't go to waste and are eaten at a normal rate.

I've found that the produce prices at my Costco are competitive and the quality is pretty good. It might be because I have a large family and need a huge bag of broccoli florets or 1.5 lbs of blueberries.

Hi! It's just a white postcard, you'll see it has Donors Choose written on the back and Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Thanks so much! I read usually only 10% of the codes are redeemed.

Trading our SUV for a minivan. by at_easein Parenting

You could try asking at the http://www.car-seat.org/ forums. A lot of car seat installation techs (right term?) post there and they have loads of experience with fitting seats in all sorts of vehicles. I have a friend that posts there and it blows me away how much she knows about which seats will work in which vehicle and what the optimum configuration will be.

I do like my minivan, but I agree that it's silly to lose money when you'll probably be able to find something that works out. For anyone else who is on the fence about a minivan, I do think that they make getting kids in and out a lot easier and if you have to be out and about with 3-4 little ones like I do, it's great that there is enough room to make everyone stand in the van until you're done unbuckling everyone.

Check the portion sizes on food products. Bag & box sizes reduced, yet the price stays the same. by Havenin Frugal

Probably depends on the product. Like the Kraft Mac n' Cheese mentioned above. One box doesn't make enough to fill up my four small boys for lunch any more. One solution is to buy two boxes, and probably wind up giving them each more (or more likely mom finishes it off straight from the pot on the stove).

ETA I can also see adults choosing to finish off a whole package because there isn't enough for another full serving.

My solution has just been to buy less and less processed foods because once you're having to buy two or three boxes or frozen bags to make dinner, it's not worth it. I used to like keeping a couple of things like that on hand for super busy nights, but it's just too expensive and takes up so much more room than "ingredients" (heh, remember complaining that your mom didn't buy food, only ingredients?)

I've noticed one of my local grocery stores (Schnucks) will clearance out the larger sizes before bringing in the smaller ones. I've learned to stock up if it's something we use often.

Food prices going up is something I can live with, but like the lady in the story, I have a larger family (only 5 kids though!) so if I'm don't notice the change until I'm cooking dinner, I might wind up with not enough to serve everybody.

What do you do for breakfast? by [deleted]in Frugal

I work at home, so I just tend to reheat last night's leftovers. It's usually a lot more filling to me than quick breakfast foods.

It's the same concept as oatmeal or any other hot grain porridge Westerners eat at breakfast.

Freezing pancakes! by tmiannin Frugal

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I freeze pancakes (and waffles and a lot of other foods I want to stay separate), I line a cookie sheet with wax paper, place the food on top, not touching, freeze until solid, and then put them in a freezer bag.

I squeeze out as much air as possible, but I'm not sure how well this method works if you want to freeze for long term. It does work beautifully for 2-3 weeks.

I make the pancakes on the smaller side so they can fit in the toaster.
