TROPHY CASE

Andy Rubin said for Face Unlock they had to "slow down the process" because it was too fast to make folks believe that any security at all was involved. Is there any way to speed it back up? by caliberin Android

There are plenty of videos showing people doing this, but as I said in another comment, they always rely on the photo used to fake being taken at about the same time as the reference photo, so same lighting, stubble, clothing etc. I've tried many times (and had people try for me) to unlock with a photo and never succeeded.

I'm certainly not defending Face Unlock as being hugely secure, but the cases where people have used pictures to unlock the phones are always ones where the picture was taken at almost the same time as FU was set up - i.e. same lighting, clothing, stubble etc. I've tried using photos from Facebook on my phone and they never work.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

I usually tell people who come out with this to go out and eat the next 10 species of toadstool they see, then come back to me and talk about how good natural is.

What are some boyfriend/girlfriend/relationship hacks? Example from my girlfriend inside. (Potentially NSFW?) by cjknjknin AskReddit

I'm not trying to be overly smug, but I didn't really think about this as being a "thing" until I read it. I set up a monitor for the consoles in the front room because it means I can play games to my heart's content while being in the same room as my wife watching shows I don't like. Always felt like a natural thing to do - neither of us would want to be sat in separate rooms doing these things.

Ah, cheers. Realised about the navigation but hadn't clicked as to what data was plotted on it :)

Love this. Both useful and attractive (so unlike me on two counts)

Not sure if I'm being dense, but what does the small chart at the bottom represent?

BBC News - Blackadder star helps staff learn train announcements by DePhraserin unitedkingdom

The problem with things like this is that while the first few times you hear them can be quite pleasant, like any joke they begin to grate after a while. It's like when people try and make a "then I took an arrow in the knee!" joke now - more likely to infuriate than amuse. At least "dry" announcements remain at approximately the same level of annoyance.

Can we draw up a list of companies who don't pay the appropriate level of tax and find alternatives who do? by horhitoin unitedkingdom

[–]DJGibbon 15 points16 points ago

Yes, if only these places could rent books for free! And if they had a large stock, but you could order books they didn't have in for you to borrow as well! We could call them "bookbraries". What a magical world that would be.

[meta] Is this a place for UK radio as well? by mattxblackin BritishTV

[–]DJGibbon 7 points8 points ago

Don't see any reason why not, as the alternatives are dead.

Unbelievable Truth has just started a new series and is very good. The News Quiz is basically the radio version of Have I Got News For You. Any more recommendations?

33% of the vote and 8 seats. 31% of the vote and 10 seats. 25% and 2 seats. Would AV have stopped this? by idowysin unitedkingdom

I respect you for being honest, and you're absolutely right that this is the case.

I suspect UKIP will be doing the same to Tory votes more and more over the next few years, however.

No, it's for parties like this that it's perfect for. It expresses perfectly the idea that the BNP's financial policies (such as they are) are pretty centrist, it's their societal policies which are extreme.

Compare Labour and the Lib Dems - very similar economic policies, but very different ideas about social policy.

New Search and Replace RegEx for Visual Studio: Because (?<a>\b(_\w+|[\w-[0-9_]]\w*)\b) is so much better than {:i} by grauenwolfin programming

[–]DJGibbon 15 points16 points ago

Got to say I'm relieved they're going standard with some things, like braces for number of occurrences - drove me mad regularly. However I never really minded the extended shorthand for things like identifiers.

Also, the regex they provide for quoted strings is wrong - it doesn't account for escaped quotes inside the string :-p

I think the difference is the "steal credit".

There's nothing wrong with organisations (be it Google, Facebook, or Apple) taking inspiration or even just stealing features; it only really burns when they have spent so long chastising others for stealing their features.

I wouldn't have minded in the slightest Apple "borrowing" Android's notification bar if they hadn't spent the last 3 years complaining about Android "stealing" their UI ideas.
