[Java] An algorithm I came up with works only on certain numbers on my penny counter program. What am I doing wrong? by Curious_McNuggetin learnprogramming

That's actually quite an interesting problem. I'm in the need of new challenges so I think I'll pick this one up.

Just for clarification, you're basically telling me that in the program, the user can input a list of currency values that could essentially represent coins and then they're also able to select any of those as the base value for counting. For example, in my algorithm the penny is the base value for counting.

that's what you mean right?

Oh, I get what you're saying. Now I know what excalibear meant by updating the value of totalpennies. I think not doing that could throw off the entire process a bit. I'm also going to try this method as well. Unfortunately I won't be able to do it tonight, but tomorrow for sure. Thanks for the help :D

Amazing. It's much simpler than my method and more accurate. Not only that, but I understand it completely. I never thought to actually use the modulus; I need to get into the habit of knowing when to use it. Thanks a bunch :)

Here's the end result by the way:

What do you mean? The value of totalPennies essentially stays the same, no?

Yeah, I realized this JUST now. Haha. I replaced that one with one that actually worked. Dang, I thought nobody would notice that mistake before I edited it :P

Ah, okay. Thanks a bunch for the insight. I'll try that method out. Hopefully I will find myself a problem that is challenging but doable.

Wow, thanks :). I've been trying to learn programming for a while, working with C# and java as of right now. I'm thinking of getting into C++; It's quite difficult to say the least. Any material you personally recommend looking at? Or do you think that any internet tutorial would suffice?

Any tips for someone interested in IT as a future career who is currently in high school?

Amazing. I didn't think it was possible for people to actually agree with redditors on here.

Wow, why didn't I think of that?

I played a match with LittleBigGnome: The persistent but unlucky player mentioned on this subreddit. It was nothing special but I know he had fun. He also ended up being MVP 3! by Curious_McNuggetin battlefield3

I totally agree. However I think one thing we can get out of this whole thing is that not all noobs are annoying and mischievous people, but rather just normal people who need a hand sometimes. But yeah you're right, it would be great if we could watch him grow in terms of skill and such. Watching him in a totally non-stalker way of course.

Well I guess you're right. I'm sure it still gave him that sense of accomplishment anyway. I don't mean to sound patronizing though :(

That made me laugh, but yeah I understand. One thing I forgot to say was that he never replied to anything I said, but somehow still listened. So I was essentially limited to just the chat box.

I just hopped onto the server he was on. Surprisingly, no other redditors were on it. But yeah, thanks. I do enjoy helping the new people when I can.

No, I'm saying that I'll be posting it to this subreddit. Guess I worded that strangely. By the way, the post is here:

Nah, it was evident from all the hooahs he was getting. And surprisingly, he never typed a single thing the entire match.

Alright, could take some time but I'll put one up on youtube and provide the link in a bit. I'll probably post it on the subreddit rather than here to gather a bit more attention.

Well, I managed to play a game with him and helped him get MVP 3. Also have video proof too if anyone is interested. Here's the battle report: http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/battlereport/show/30403132/1/393327988/
