I am SO tired and hungry by rakatuin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 0 points1 point ago

Well, what are you actually eating? List some of your daily foods out for us. That will have a lot to do with how you feel. It may not be just having no carbs that's the culprit.

The good news is, the best exercise you can do is also the easiest one and needs no equipment...walking.

Watch this amazing video called 23 1/2 hours and you'll see why. It's excellent and shows how walking just 30 minutes throughout the course of the day (not even all at once!) can give you all sorts of health benefits.

Your best weight loss tip by mkay0in loseit

I've actually talked to my family about this (they are very supportive I should say). I said, this is the way I eat now, so when we get together for events and stuff I just want you to know that I stay away from X foods and I eat Y foods.

I actually had this conversation where I work, since we have frequent meetings where snacks are provided. Now in addition to cookies we used to have exclusively, we also have fruit and veggie platters.

Paleo Diet by [deleted]in loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 19 points20 points ago

I'm neither for or against Paleo personally, but prospective Paleo dieters should read the Wikipedia entry about it, which goes into both the pro and con arguments.

Side Note: "Paleo" is a really cool name for a diet IMO.

Your best weight loss tip by mkay0in loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 40 points41 points ago

Don't go on a diet, permanently change the way you eat by slowly replacing bad habits with good ones. That way the weight naturally comes off and when you hit your goal, you've already built the mechanisms that will maintain it (e.g. your new, good habits).

What the hell do you guys eat? by Dischadein loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 6 points7 points ago

Breakfast: Plain oatmeal with a dollop of peanut butter & a sliced banana.

Lunch: Usually salad (romain or arugula) with grilled chicken, tomatoes, broccoli, wheat berries and dressing of balsamic vinegar & olive oil.

Dinner: Lately I've been doing bean soups (white beans, navy beans etc.) with quinoa. Usually proceeded by a small salad.

Snacks: Whole fruits (apple, orange, etc.), some cheese, a Kind bar, a small handful of nuts or seed, Fage yogurt (plain with something added like the aforementioned seeds/nuts).

Drink: I pretty much drink water and unsweetened ice tea exclusively at this point. Nothing sugared.

I've basically stopped eating any processed food at this point and have pretty much eliminated sugar too. I also don't eat any "white" foods like potatoes, white rice, white bread, etc. I don't eat too much bread but when I do it's some kind of whole grain.

Since I've gotten rid of processed food my taste has become much more acute and foods I used to think were either bland or inedible are now delicious.

I also feel GREAT and have a ton more energy.

Good luck! It takes a while to shift your habits, but once you do it's awesome :)

How hard is it to actually swear off bread, pasta, and potatoes? by jeremyosborne81in loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 9 points10 points ago

Not really that hard if you approach it the right way. I've got two suggestions that worked great for me:

  1. Don't swear them off, replace them. That's a subtle difference, but an important one for your mind/body to accept the change. A great and easy substitute for pasta and rice is the "super food" quinoa. Here's what the NY Times has to say about it.

  2. Another good option is to cut back and "upgrade" rather than try to eliminate all at once. When you have pasta, make just the amount you could fit in the palm of your hand, not huge amounts. Use whole grain bread when you use it (make sure it says "whole grain" not just "grain" or "multi-grain").

Hope that helps!

Why am I always so freaking hungry?! by ohhannabananain loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 1 point2 points ago

The foods you're eating will make you hungry. As others have said, they're all full of carbs and sugar. You need to work some lean proteins and good fats in there.

If you can tolerate yogurt, looks for 2% Fage, which has little sugar but more protein...very filling. Try to eat a few seeds or nuts before your meals as they'll digest slowly and curb your hunger. Only a few though...an amount about the size of 8 cashews, which seems pathetic when you first try it but your body gets used to it pretty quickly.

For lunch I do a BIG salad of romaine or arugula with baby tomatoes, broccoli, wheat berries and some chicken for protein. I make sure to put some olive oil on it...that's a healthy fat. The chicken, wheat berries and olive oil are all good proteins & fats that make me feel full while all the veggies add good nutrients and volume.

Another great thing to do is have healthy soups with beans (white, navy, lentil). The beans are good proteins and the water adds volume.

As others have said, try to cut down or get ride of all the processed foods...the granola bars, etc. Whole foods (thinks that have not been processed by humans somewhere along the line) will stay in your system longer. There are a few bars out there that use more whole foods than processed. Look for Kind bars and Lara bars, but stay away from the ones that are "cookie dough" flavored. I think I 've had the banana nut Lara bars that were good.

I think you'll be able to curb your appetite significantly once you're able to make some basic changes. Good luck! Report back on how it's going :)

Lost looking at Gym Machines. by SuddenDethin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 1 point2 points ago

I had the same issue, so I paid for a personal trainer for a few sessions to teach me how to do proper exercise. I like the cable machine which works a lot of muscles at once but isn't quite as intense as free weights. Once you learn how to use it, it's fantastic, and few other people know how to use it so it's always free.

Sure a trainer will cost some $$, but I would rather pay for that than have the extra weight around.

Winter Exercising? by pilotoatomicoin loseit

I bike in the winter with no issues. Get a good bike jacket like this, long johns, gloves, a balaclava and a fleece neck gaiter and you're good to go.

Hey, reddit. Just wondering...How has your life changed since your weight loss? Dating? Jobs? Friends? by learn-some-knowledgein loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 2 points3 points ago

A lot has changed:

*I literally feel better 24 hours a day *I sleep better and get up earlier *I get more done with my time and have more energy *I get a LOT of compliments *I bike to work and take long walks and go to the gym and love it. I was never very active before. *I enjoy food more and eat much healthier and now enjoy cooking *I'm engaged now, though not really sure the weight loss has much to do with that.

[SV] Today I got on the scale and it said 175! Woohoo! by CraigAtSyfyin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy[S] 1 point2 points ago

I did it in two stages. First I went from 225 to 185 or so and stayed there for a while. Now I've decided to get down to 160 so in the last few weeks I've gone from 185 to 175.

How do you not cheat every day this season... by Zabiiin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 0 points1 point ago

I found something really simple that worked incredibly well for me: I wrote down every thing I ate on Xmas. I have an iPhone so just used Notes to keep track of what I was eating AS I was eating it (not after when it would be too late).

My mother traditionally puts out a massive quantity of snacks and deserts along with a robust dinner, so it's incredibly easy to eat a lot more than I actually want to.

It worked like a charm because it turned the always dangerous mindless eating into mindful eating. And you know what? I feel AWESOME about it. The day after Xmas I felt really good about what I was able to do, not really bad about what I'd eaten.

Best Xmas ever!

Hope that helps! Good luck!

New to loseit. Lost 100 lbs [before and after inside] by tigerdactylin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 0 points1 point ago

It's hard to drop a habit altogether, BUT it's less hard to replace it. Keep having snacks, just change them to different things. I used to go for cookies in the afternoon...now I'll go for a Kind bar, which has things like whole nuts in it and lots less sugar. Or I'll have some yogurt (Fage) with fruit, which gives me the feeling of eating something creamy and sweet but it's a something that makes me feel good at the end of the day, not something that only makes me feel good in the moment.

Hope that helps! Great work so far!!

What was the breaking point that inspired you to lose weight? by octobretyin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 4 points5 points ago

A friend my age who was out of shape and overweight died of a heart attack. After that I went in for a full physical and the doctor told me I had high cholesterol, I was headed toward high blood pressure, and my BMI was out of control. Went from 225 to 185, slipped back up to 195 for a bit and as of today I'm at 179 and making more (permanent) changes to my life. I'm going to get to 160 before all is said and done.

[NSV] Down 35 lbs, but even more importantly... by ksalleyin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 2 points3 points ago

Fantastic. The great news is...it gets better! I not only weigh 45lbs less than I did years ago, I feel better all day long, I get more done before than I ever did, I can shop for clothes much more easily....it goes on and on and on. And I know all this work will keep paying off for, literally, decades to come. It's awesome! I'm happy that you're well on your way to reaching your own goals :)

How did you beat your late night binge eating habit? by JustReadin loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 0 points1 point ago

I used to do this a lot. Now I don't eat after dinner. I make sure I have a healthy protein during dinner (lean meat, chicken, fish or beans) as proteins make you feel full longer. Later on when I get a little hungry, I just have a big glass or two of water and try to shift my focus to something else...calling a friend, going for a walk, etc. For me and many others some kind of exercise really helps. I have an easy workout routine I can do while I watch TV, so I'm actually replacing a habit that doesn't help me reach my goals with a habit that does :)

Keep with it...you can do this. It may be hard at first, but it will get easier!

SetBack Saturday - But not giving up by tito316in loseit

[–]CraigAtSyfy 2 points3 points ago

Don't think of it as a set back, think of it as feedback for the next time. Know that understress you go for Chinese food and PS3, so next time maybe change the equation a little..I'll get Chinese food, but I'll get the sauce on the side and use it sparingly. I'll get brown rice instead of white. I'll get steamed veggies on the side and eat them first. Etc. Over time this will really change things until pretty soon your comfort food will be something that's nutritionally great for you, so it really will be comforting because you'll be doing something that not only feels good but is good for you :) As for Saturday...pfft. It's over, you learned from it, you're back on track. That's what's important.
