If God is not real then who do atheists think they were created by? by theoctopus5in atheism

[–]CottonNero 1 point2 points ago

Who, in your opinion, created God?

Dick Van Dyke, unfortunately.

Arizona Sheriff Sends Team to Hawaii for Obama Birth Certificate by LaBamba00in politics

[–]CottonNero 11 points12 points ago

He's not a local lunatic sheriff, he's the local lunatic sheriff. The standard by which all other banana-crazy racist power-hungry shitbags are measured. When he dies, they're going to put him in a vault in Paris next to the kilogram.

Arpaio so consistently does such monumentally lunatic shit that it's no longer particularly newsworthy.

I'll cheerfully settle for him going down like Byron Hadley.

Atheists are just as Hate Filled as the people they try to condemn by oncderpin atheism

[–]CottonNero 0 points1 point ago

If everyone had a comfortable living, religion would go down too. Countries with a social safety net get pretty 'meh' about religion. It's only the US among wealthy countries that can't be bothered to care for its poorest, and a lot of that is tied up in religion. Which is why American atheists need to be loud.

Solar eclipse... by malakistiriin pics

[–]CottonNero 18 points19 points ago

One of the things I really like about eclipses is that our technology for viewing them often has a steampunk vibe to it. It's like for dealing with this one thing, the 1897 solution was good enough.

US elections: Why does the world's greatest democracy offer just two choices? by TommyCollinsin TrueReddit

[–]CottonNero 0 points1 point ago

Why? Because we have first-past-the-post elections in single-member districts for virtually every election more important than school boards and city councils.

If you want a viable third (or fourth or beyond) party, you need either multiple people being elected from the same district, or transferable voting.

Where did the assertion that atheists claim there is no god come from? by JDX3DSin atheism

[–]CottonNero 0 points1 point ago

The best combo is when you get people claiming that atheism is a religion, but Christianity is a relationship.

So I got thinking...Atheists don't believe in an afterlife or just not in heaven or hell or reincarnation? by Purpleiamin atheism

[–]CottonNero 1 point2 points ago

Atheism is a one-question quiz. (Hint: the answer is 'no'.)

I think it's pretty common (and logical) to toss out heaven, hell, angels, spirits, and a whole pile of other stuff out with the gods, but it's by no means a necessity.

Those not wanting Gay marriage by whydushootmein atheism

[–]CottonNero 1 point2 points ago

It used to be a property exchange between the woman's father and the woman's husband.

It used to subsume the rights of the wife to the rights of the husband.

It used to be something that, in many jurisdictions, slaves couldn't do, or could only do with the permission of their owners.

It used to be something that a white person and a black person couldn't do together.

It used to be a shield for rape.

It used to be a lot of things that it isn't anymore, just in this country in the past 200 years.

Does /r/atheism reject the supernatural as well? by Rendezin atheism

[–]CottonNero 5 points6 points ago

Schizophrenia exists. Liars exist. Charlatans, fools, knaves, and con artists exist. And people, who are otherwise sane and committed to the truth, can misinterpret their experiences and sensations so wildly as to create a lot of incredible stories.

So yes, in the same way that I believe in no gods, I believe in no supernatural phenomena. The more parsimonious explanation, to use the vernacular, is that people be trippin'.

Place your bets! by miked12in funny

[–]CottonNero 1 point2 points ago

Depends. How much prep time and information do the humans get? How much space, and what kind of space, do they have to work with? I guarantee there's a winning strategy for humanity, even if it requires a casualty rate of 75% or so.

With 6% sales tax, a pre-tax order of $6.28 comes out to $6.66. With prices ending in 9, it's relatively easy to get to that total - one item for $4.99 and one for $1.29.

I worked as a cashier in Michigan for a number of years, and I'd say that about 25% of the time, a person who got that total would buy a candy bar or something to change the total.

Jesus fucking christ MLB, have you already forgotten how unfair this was?! by beebheadin sports

Note that this is for this year only, to cut out a travel day, in order to fit the extra round of playoffs in.

Next year it goes back to "Higher seed gets games 1, 2, and 5 at home".

Boombatta and Dagoth, actually. Andre the Giant was the guy in the monster suit at the end. Kind of a weird kaiju moment.

Marriage? by Tendiein atheism

[–]CottonNero 1 point2 points ago

Interestingly, there's an anti-marriage vein running through Paul's letters, but it gets pretty thoroughly ignored in practice.

If there is no evidence for or against the existence of God, isn't the choice to believe in Him equally as valid as the choice not to believe? by kvothe_1in atheism

[–]CottonNero 0 points1 point ago

Yes. If there is no evidence either way, both choices are valid.

But, from what we know of the universe, if a god remotely like the Christian one exists, it is either immoral, insane, or ineffectual. Nonexistence is the only good excuse.
