Have you watched Party Down? Orgy parties are damn hard to organize.

Why did Kristen Wiig get such a big send off on SNL? Nothing against her, I just honestly want to know. by thankyouericin television

[–]Copse_Of_Trees 3 points4 points ago

I'd guess it's at least partially due to the huge success of Bridesmaids, which really put Wiig on the map. She's a full blown celeb right now.

Poehler left the same fall Parks and Rec debuted, so she wasn't a huge household name yet. Same goes for Sandler, who was just was just starting his string of comedies when he was fired in 1995 (had only starred in Airheads and Billy Madison at that point).

Ferrell was probably more well known outside of SNL fans while he was still on the show, with roles in some huge films (Austin Powers, Zoolander) but never had a lead role (Old School, 2003) until after he left SNL in 2002.

Any comedy shows that don't have too much awkward humor? by bagrain television

Oh, and just thought of another one: Black Books. Classic British dry humor. Cringeworthy in that it's about a bookstore owner who abuses his employee and customers to an absurd degree, but none of that awkward, knowing wink at the camera type stuff.

Yeah, cringe-worthy awkward is all the rage right now in comedy. I've been a really big fan of Modern Family. There may still be a couple cringey moments, but usually when they do those they know they're just going for the laugh and it's the punchline of the scene - cut and move on. That's a difference from the Office, where it's awkward and then there's several minutes of the characters dealing with it - a slow and painful process.

Yay! Was going to post this one, but I'll just boost this comment instead. Very little awkward cringing! Just a silly workplace comedy about working for a megacorp while trying to keep one's humanity.

Reddit, as a classical musician, tell me what we could do better. What is it about classical music that keeps you away from our concerts? by a12345678910in AskReddit

Hmm, interesting take. I will point out however that deadmau5 is out there touring and selling joints out.

I really like the point about audience participation and the concert-going experience. Very similar I imagine to the plight of live theater. Broadway is still going strong with extravagant, entertaining musicals, but not so much with the slow moving, thought-provoking dramas.

In short: Needs more entertainment value. The LoTR movie/live that's been brought up is a great example. Even a single "get up and dance to some Bach" would liven things up.

And since Ramquat brought up Beethoven, I feel the need to post the legendary classical disco cover

A Fifth of Beethoven

Hell yeah Strung Out on OK Computer!

It does seem there are fewer crossovers. One of my favorite albums is Yes playing with the London Philharmonic.

Variety! I have a related comment: too much of associated classical music is hearing the hits. Do we really need to here Beethoven's 5th again? It's like the over-saturation of pop music. Is anyone not sick of Adele right now? Yeah, maybe you mix a couple of the classics in, but so little of the populace has heard more than maybe the top 25 classical pieces.

Looking for database of ecosystem areas by panama_davein ecology

[–]Copse_Of_Trees 2 points3 points ago

One dataset to consider may be ecoregions, which is a branch of geography that classifies areas based on a general combination of all ecological factors (climate, soils, plant species, ect.) It only covers Mexico though (and Canada and the U.S.)

There may well be similar types of ecoregion studies for the rest of Central America.

How would you combine the DC, Maryland, and Virginia flags, r/vex? by Box_of_Shitin vexillology

[–]Copse_Of_Trees 2 points3 points ago

Well, since Maryland is already quartered, you could slap the DC flag in one quadrant, keep both designs from Maryland in two other quadrants, and then fill the Virginia quadrant with ???.

Yesterday at the supermarket, a woman told off another woman standing in the 1-8 items line for having more than 8 items. What fairly harmless event would set you off? by yamz66in AskReddit

[–]Copse_Of_Trees 0 points1 point ago

Can't train easily. There's the rub. Management, especially lazy/stupid managers, love black and white concepts. Engage ALL THE CUSTOMERS is an easy thing to teach and admonish when not followed exactly.

I've had many a manager not understand or blithely ignore the concept of judgment call. To be fair, some of these managers do deal with apathetic idiots.

And, relevant username in previous post.

Hmm, interesting experiment. Think of the situation where the "through" lane is at a standstill. The theoretical efficient thing to do is take your own car out of the through lane. merge into the empty "dead end" lane and just stop right there in the empty lane, without moving forward. That force everyone behind you into zipper formation.

Might have to try this someday, though possibly illegal?
