Kings only wore purple because it was a status symbol - Purple dyes were incredibly expensive because it took so much effort to extract it from natural sources in the days when Kings actually had power. Purple is only cool now because of Prince.

Decided to take a personal day off work... and now I'm shaking with anxiety. Anyone else have trouble taking a break? by McKilkorin AskReddit

[–]Citizenchimp 1 point2 points ago

Yup. My mind counts the waking hours I have for the day and realizes there aren't enough to get everything done, and I kind of shut down -- which makes me feel worse. When I am in shutdown mode I feel terrible, not relaxed, because I know I should be getting tons of shit done.

Process for character creation and outlines by Mrthursdayin Screenwriting

[–]Citizenchimp 1 point2 points ago

Make your characters superheroes in some regard - Give them some special talent or defining aspect that sets them apart from everyone. Give your characters weaknesses equal to their strengths. Make your villains equal if not greater in power to your heroes. Make your villains the heroes of their own stories. Characters who are evil just for evil's sake are really boring - but if they think they are fighting for their own happy ending... then it gets interesting.

Quick question regarding the length of Act 1 and Act 2. by TheKyleShowin Screenwriting

[–]Citizenchimp -2 points-1 points ago

Here in Hollywood - folks tend to read the first two pages to see if it has some funny or compelling stuff. Then they jump ahead to page 25 - The inciting incident that shows the protagonist jumping into Act II. If they don't find it within a page of there, they'll often set it down or throw it out. They'll check the Midpoint (55-60) see if it looks like the protagonist is riding high on what he thought was his easily won victory. Around page 85 they'll want to see the hero in the mud of defeat, looking for the power to continue. If they've found all these things, they might actually read the last five pages to see if the hero has CHANGED. To see if they're doing things they never thought possible of themselves based on who their character was at the beginning. THEN and only then will a busy reader or low-level producer go back and read all the creative stuff you spent so much time dreaming up to fill the space between all these points. Really depressing to hear as a writer, but pretty accurate as far as I've found. The most helpful thing I've learned, is to write your scenes like little skits or sketches - each with its own problem or question. Have each one almost get resolved but then present another problem or question that leads to the next scene. Save relief, fulfillment, and satisfaction till the very end. (or DON'T, if you're thinking of a sequel.)

Pfft. Like it's just us! Biggest turn offs for a guy in a single girl's apartment? by snoressin AskReddit

Clothes & shoes everywhere. Hair and hair products everywhere. Heavy floral perfumes, scented candles, body scrub smells. And just wanted to mention that kotex pads have a definite default smell to them (maybe some kind of perfume they spray on) and it is a pretty big turnoff. Can't say why - just is. Don't know if it's possible to store those things in an airtight container, but...

I would be so down with that. I was doing lighting for an indie film last weekend that was using a ton of fake blood, so I started singing the fake blood song - and to my utter joy, two of my grips started singing along! I had a feeling they were Crescent Fresh from the moment I met them, but at that moment... I knew.

Upon moving to Los Angeles last year, I was greatly saddened to discover that Pico, Las Palmas, and Colorado, don't intersect anywhere in the whole city! You'd think that Mr. Lynch had a sense of humor or something.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. A NASA-nerd friend of mine pointed it out to me once as it went over -- would have sworn it was some kind of UFO otherwise.
