What is one lie your parents told you as a child that completely screwed you up? by Masmodaiin AskReddit

When I was the impressionable young age of 5 my pops told me the story of the Toe Monster. This grotesque creature resides under your bed and unless you keep your toes tucked under the covers...it will come from underneath and bite off your toes. I was a skeptical little kid but this seriously scared the shit out of me. Fate as it is, pops sealed the deal by pointing out the missing toe on a friend of his (side story: friend lost thumb in an M-80 accident...got replaced with big toe....fuck) and saying "See...THAT'S what happens if you let your feet slip off the side of the bed!" To this day I still can't sleep well unless I do the nightly ritual of lifting my legs and letting the covers fall under them to protect my priceless toes. Thanks a lot pops.

My dad used to tell us that if our feet got out of the covers while we slept our toes would be bitten off by 'The Toe Monster'. He sealed the deal when he pointed out a guy at the beach with no big toe and claimed the guy was a Toe Monster victim. I'm 29 and still can't go to sleep with out tucking the covers under my feet. Thanks dad.

IAmA fella who bled out and died twice in the intensive care unit at my local ICU while completely cognizant just before I blacked out. It was mindbendingly surreal. AmA. by joey_knucklesin IAmA

Unbelievable. I just lost my mom in February from a somewhat similar story. Her esophagus became diseased so her ability to swallow food became difficult and food would constantly get stuck. She had surgery with the plan to remove the diseased section of her esophagus and forming her stomach up to make the difference. During the extraction the surgeon accidentally ripped a hole in one of the main arteries leading to the heart. A massive bleed ensued and she had to have over 40 units of blood and plasma while they located the bleed. They aborted the rest of the operation and she had to live the rest of her days getting nutrition via a feeding tube. They connected what was left of her esophagus to her chest so she could still eat/drink but it would empty into a bag that connected to her chest. It was quite tortuous for her and for our family. She went from 160lbs to 95lbs. She passed due to complications without ever getting an attempt at fixing the botched surgery. I miss her everyday. Definitely call your mom and tell her you love her.

This really made my night. I lost my mom 9 months ago and today is her birthday. This sums up everything I feel about the situation. Thank you.
