You should know that mocking a suicidal person who's on the edge is a shitty thing to do, then making a bot to 'strike back'at the reddit that busted you for it is sad.

I understand your reason, but it doesn't connect with reality. I interpret your stance as basically this:

"Despite what their privacy policy clearly says, the fact that the plugin can see my data while in the browser concerns me despite there being no evidence whatsoever that the data ever leaves the system". Do you apply the same standard to your browser? Because as I noted earlier, the browser also has that same access.

If you've ever written a program with Facebook or Google Plus integration, you toggle the same sorts of flags that this plugin does with Firefox. They're explicitly calling out the fact that their code will need, to do its job, have access to the HTML you're browsing.

Not their server.

Not some shady corporate database.

The plugin itself which is resident on your machine and doesn't send this data back to the mothership.

The first time Adblock Plus started tattling, a zillion alarm bells would go off because it's on so many machines and there are so very many people watching their traffic for exactly this sort of violation of trust.

I think you've dug yourself into a hole; you had a recollection that ABP had 'gone evil' sometime in the past but when challenged find yourself unable to provide any evidence. You're realizing that you may have misremembered or confused it with something else, but instead of just saying "You know, I guess I made a mistake" you're going to the mat with an argument that doesn't hold water.

I'm also a software engineer, so let's lay it on the line. Have you run a packet trace? Have you found even one scintilla of evidence that Ad Block Plus is transmitting your browsing habits back to a server? Because if they aren't, then your entire point is moot.

This phrase is traditionally associated with a show that exposes sexual predators who prey on children/young teens. Please explain why you would use it in this context regarding an adult.

So well executed on, as well.

I'm beginning to realize that you don't understand how computer programs work. I'll try one last time before I give up on you:

The plugin needs to be able to parse the entirety of the HTML looking for strings that match its filters. These are typically URLs, sometimes with supporting HTML structures. Firefox, when specifying what data a plugin can access, lists this out (quite correctly) as 'Your data on all websites' because all of your data on all websites is contained within the HTML.

This is a programming thing. It is not a conspiracy thing.

Firefox itself ALSO has access to all 'your data on all websites' because it's the tool that presents that data.

Neuromonkey replied with the following elsewhere in the conversation: http://delcode.delaware.gov/title21/c042/index.shtml

Check out 4201 at the top, it could make a reasonable case for a basis for the charge you mentioned and may exist in the codes in other states. TIL!

Thank you! 4201 (at the top) could very reasonably be read to imply that there's a requirement to make an effort to identify the owner of the animal if the animal is considered property.

I appreciate the link.

I would like to know more. Can you give me the name of the law or something I can use to cross-reference that against my state? It's possible that Oregon (or my city 'Springfield') has something like this too and I just don't know about it. I've never hit an animal, but I'd like to know what the law is.

What crime? It is not against the law to hit a dog and drive away where I live to my knowledge. Is it different where you are?

That's why you use Qik or one of the other 'record directly to internet' apps! :)

Why do you assume they're callous? If the dog darted out in front of them and got hit through no fault of their own (which happens) and they feel like absolute crap, what's the benefit of rubbing their nose in how much grief they caused?

Dogs dart out from behind cars and move FAST. Accidents happen, and not everyone who hits an animal with a car is a villain.

If you can suggest a technical method ABP can use to filter the sites you're going to without being able to see the content of the page, you may be the next internet billionaire. Obviously it needs to be able to parse the page to filter content, how else would it do its job?

Edit: Ah! I understand the nature of your confusion. You thought it was saying it was sending that data back to them. No, that's the data the plugin needs to be able to parse to do its thing. It doesn't send the information anywhere.

[–]Chairboy 0 points1 point ago

Na-a-a-a-a. But seriously, if you're going to spread bad information, you should issue a correction if you discover it was. If you're not certain of something, it's usually normal to say "I think I read that" or "I think I heard" or something like that instead of just laying it down as a FACT.

Making what may be a baseless claim of the magnitude you appear to have is indeed serious business.

Any luck finding data to back up your statement? I re-read http://adblockplus.org/en/privacy and it fails to bolster your claim. Did you lie? Make a mistake? Or do you have evidence?

There are oodles of heterosexual relationships in Star Trek, it's not 'focussing on orientation' to include more of the spectrum of sexuality.
