TROPHY CASE

Game designers, what methodologies and which tools do you use to help your creative process? by psnakein gamedev

[–]CatLover99 3 points4 points ago

The water from the shower also ionizes the air and thus the falling water molecules filter out the air leaving very clean oxygen. The cleaner the oxygen the better your body is able to use the oxygen ergo you have better more creative thoughts.

Yay science!

You could create an animation and record it as a video. Displaying videos in XNA is actually very simple and can be done in a few lines of code.

I need help understanding some game development concepts. (Game States, Levels/Editors, Engines) by Excein gamedev

[–]CatLover99 0 points1 point ago

You can think of state as any type of action you need to keep track of for you sprite because it might limit another action or "state". So if the sprite was dead, or powered up or jumping or ducking, etc. Those might all be "states" your character could be in and you might want to check to see if the character was in (or not in) a current state before you do something or draw something to the screen.

This tutorial is quick and touches on States: http://www.xnadevelopment.com/tutorials/thewizard/theWizard.shtml

Mobile Platform Development - Native Coding vs. Unity or Flash by NightInWhiteSatin2in gamedev

[–]CatLover99 2 points3 points ago

Like I said... it's just how I feel. In my opinion Unity is far too abstract and I feel like I'm not really "creating" but rather editing. Coding something in XNA from scratch for example is the perfect level of abstraction for me, I feel like I am truly creating something (even if I am using Libraries created by someone else).

Don't you know the #1 rule on reddit? Don't let them know you're new, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience... I've said too much already.

And then there's that one guy who wants to make engines and his own game, and feels conflicted.

Could you or someone explain to me what this is, it seems impressive but I have no idea what this is.

I think the difference would be more like using a Nail Gun vs Hammer. Using bare knuckles makes it sound like it's impossible, which it by no means is.

You know it's irrational, so don't make your decision based on it.

I agree but the irrational choice will make me happy, and in the end I wouldn't be making games if it didn't make me happy.

I'm not saying anyone who uses UNITY or similar tools is cheating themselves, hell I hardly know how to use UNITY and the stuff people can create using a tool like that blows my mind and truly is an accomplishment, but in the end I think it is important to do what makes you happiest.

Mobile Platform Development - Native Coding vs. Unity or Flash by NightInWhiteSatin2in gamedev

[–]CatLover99 2 points3 points ago

The biggest factor for me choosing native was that I felt like I was cheating if I used a powerful tool like UNITY. It may sound strange but that's just how I felt.

Edit: I should have been more clear: I should have said that I feel like I am Cheating myself. And again it is just a personal thing.

Good News: Creativity is not a talent, it is a way of operating

But normally I don't try to push creativity, sometimes you just have to let it come to you.

Edit: http://vimeo.com/24302498 and http://vimeo.com/18913413 may help you "boost" your creativity

this.TargetElapsedTime = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(1.0f / 120.0f);

would be easier to remember (120.0f is 120 frames per second)

I share a bus stop with a girl like this... Every morning I have to listen to her bullshit as she talks to her friends about how evil men are. By far the worst part of my day.

Honestly it isn't hard. It's just time consuming, I know the difference between apples and potatoes and it's basically the same concept but with a lot of vegetables and fruits and time wasted sorting.
