TROPHY CASE

Secret Santa

Hey Reddit. Why do I talk like a fucking 10 year old retard to my cat? do any other cat owners do this?

No, you're thinking of hoarse. Horse are ladies who you pay for blowjobs.

I tended to think of the rituals as plays. We even had rehearsals for them, so it wasn't that hard to think of them like that. Just an antiquated play we were putting on.

I've got one too! Freakin love it. After reading the accounts of people who got an IUD, I'm convinced it was much less painful, too.

Thanks for that! I looked all over and I knew my memory was screwed up.

Funny story, one of our leaders actually called it a cult. And then she qualified her statement with, "But we're not of the occult." I don't think she quite understood all the different implications the word "cult" has. ^^;

When I was 12, I ran over a baby bunny with the lawnmower. I didn't even see the thing until afterwards. My parents thought it was hilarious and called me bunny killer. :/

One of my uncles was a shriner who basically ran a charity to buy therapeutic tricycles for kids with various disabilities. I may not agree with the shriner's religious beliefs, but those guys are always awesome. I've never met one who was cranky or mean, which is saying something for a group largely comprised of old men.

Haha, with the dark reddit chrome extension, it actually highlights the text for me to read it better.

Hm. Probably Job-A-Rama (yes, dorky, I know). It was a weekend at a camp, where we got to meet other Bethels around the state, make crafts, go on hikes and otherwise party.

Nothing crazy. Just to keep meetings secret (yup, breaking that one) and uphold the integrity of the group. We didn't have to say we believed in Christ (they accept all faiths) but we did have to say we believed in a higher power. Also, we didn't have a vow of chastity that I can remember, but getting pregnant out of wedlock meant you got kicked out.

Well, it was understood that it was meant to be the devil. Our Bethel tended to use adversary instead I guess because there was this feeling that anything other than that would be words that shouldn't be said in a place of purity or somesuch shit like that.

No. ^^; And I'm not sure what you're referring to.

EDIT: D'oh, missed a Simpsons reference.

That made me think of something else. We never, ever said 'devil' or 'satan' or anything like that during a meeting. He was only ever referred to as the adversary, like in the actual Book of Job.

It's actually referring to the daughters he got after his ordeal. The story of the Book of Job is told to every new member at their initiation, and it is stressed after that that his daughters received an inheritance as well as his sons. There were supposedly three daughters, and the trio of the Honored Queen, Senior Princess and Junior Princess mimics that. They are also shown in a triangle, and there are three main symbols of the order: the lily of the valley for purity, a lamp (think Aladdin's lamp) and something else that I can't remember but I'll look up cause I like you guys. :)

Well, to get into the specifics of each meeting, it was all very strict in how they would be conducted. We had uniforms (white robes that are actually very pretty) and positions that changed every six months. (I held the positions of Librarian, Inner Guard, Chaplain, and a couple others that I can't remember the title of while I was there.)

At the start of the meeting, we'd line up and proceed into the meeting room while singing "Onward Christian Soldiers." The meeting was led by the Honored Queen, Senior Princess and Junior Princess (they wore purple capes to distinguish themselves from the rest of us, the Queen's being longer). At the end of every meeting, we would proceed to the back of the room, where in file in a certain marching order, we would kneel in the shape of a cross and sing "Nearer My God to Thee."

The middle part was a lot of recitation and talking about events we would go to or hold, such as pizza parties, going to different churches (we were all different denominations of Christian, and would visit each other's churches to see how they conducted church), parades and other things. It was all very formal and weary. Most of us would rather have the meetings without all the formal stuff, but tradition required it.

EDIT: if anyone's wondering what the robes looked like, I found this picture of a Bethel all decked out in their robes.

They weren't much, I don't remember the exact amount. Probably around 5 dollars a month. To be allowed into the meetings now they wouldn't make me pay all my dues back that I've left over the years, probably just a few months' worth.

It gave a feeling of worth and community to young girls. We had to memorize a lot of stuff to recite at meetings, and it all felt very official and religious when we did it right. At conferences we'd get special awards for memorization and such. I earned a couple medals myself, though I have no idea where they are now. Personally, this was a great primer for learning lines when I got into acting in late middle school and through high school.

We were given the impression that we were part of a community, but it was more of a teen girls gather to do good community than anything about the community needing protection. On the contrary, we were often quite open (perhaps more open than our vows allowed) about what went on at the meetings to try and recruit new members.

BurntCarousel [S] 2 points3 points 1 day ago[-]

Haha, not really. The meetings were 90% recitation of rituals and 10% planning events. I also have the unique perspective of having two uncles and a grandfather who were masons, and trust me, at least in the Kentuckiana area, it's just a club for old Christian white men to have other people to talk to.

Recite a LOT of boring Christian shit. Prayed a little, sang a little. They were "secret" but there really wasn't much worth keeping secret going on.
