How many of you have refused marriage proposals and why did you do it? How did it happen? by SavvyVeein AskReddit

[–]Bripocalypse 0 points1 point ago

This isn't my story. But. My best friend in college (and still today) had an ex girlfriend from high school that he remained on and off friends with. Anyway, she randomly starts dating some guy at our college. They decide to move to New York together, before he gets his degree. I think they've been going out for like three months at this point? Anyway, a week into it, they're totally fucking broke, and he's got a terrible band. In the middle of one of their sets, he pulls out a plastic ring he got from a cereal box and asks her to marry him. I think at this point she realized just how terribly bad of an idea this all has been. She says no. He finishes his set, and they are finished as a couple.

Congrats! Hopefully I'll be able to make a similar post in a few months.

Are there any little known historical characters that you hate more than most others? by Neechevoin AskHistorians

[–]Bripocalypse 0 points1 point ago

Ah. Yeah, I understand that. But, yes, there is a wide diversity of the involvement of monarchs in capitalist enterprises - especially given that this fellow was around so late in the day (1830's - early 1900's.)

Eh. I don't really think you can excuse him for doing "other remarkable things." If Andrew Jackson had led a campaign that killed and displaced as many white American citizens, he would be considered a monster in today's history books, despite everything else. But, because his victims were Native Americans, his other "feats" take precedent in our collective memory.

I mean, fascists in Europe were responsible for amazing technological advances. But that's not what we remember them for, and for good reason. Yes, we can remember those advancements they contributed, but we consider them criminals - rightly so.

In general, Andrew Jackson doesn't get enough hate for his atrocities.

Capitalism was truly invented under western monarchies. It's not so much of a stretch. A good book that discusses this is The Slave Ship by Marcus Rediker. I'm sure others go into further depth about it.

I mean, in many ways, the same is true about the lack of knowledge - or complete misconceptions - Americans have about how we ravaged and murdered countless Native Americans. Western countries tend to get away with historical disassociation if the terrible things they did were to non-white people.

15 minutes ago I almost died. I was ratcheting a 3500 lbs boat onto a trailer and the hook point broke. It missed my head by less than an inch. What near death experiences have you had Redditors? by Ecuatorianoin AskReddit

When I was 3, I was sledding down a steep hill. We had been sledding down it all day, just fine. Finally, on the last go, I insisted my dad give me a push so I'd go faster. He did, and I did go faster, but I went in the wrong direction. Near the bottom of the hill, the sled slammed into a tree. It was also on an inflatable sled. So, I was flung off and forwards into the tree, head first.

My dad had to carry me up the hill (the car was at the top of the hill) like a rag doll. We're rushing to the hospital, when suddenly we get stuck behind an incredibly long train. No one remembers how long we got stuck there, but my dad swears it was at least a lifetime. Anyway, my mother and sister are in the car with me. I'm freaking out, flailing everywhere, and my sister is trying to hold me down and relax me in my seat. (She's much older than I am). Anyway, as a way to try to calm me down, my mom says: "Brian! Look, look, there's a train!" I respond: "Mommy, I can't see the train." So, she proceeds to freak out.

A billion years later, when the train is done trying to finish me off, we get to the hospital. My dad is in the waiting room, trying to keep my conscious, making a bit of a fuss - but, you know, it's understandable given the situation. Anyway, a nurse must be annoyed or something, because she comes out and says "Sir, you don't need to do that." She insists on it, so my dad stops. Roughly 5 minutes later, I'm unconscious, which can, you know, lead to death. The nurse rushes out and swears, and starts shaking me, yelling "Brian! Brian! Wake up!" My dad wasn't super pleased.

Anyway, it turns out I suffered the following: an huge gash on my forehead (all healed today), a broken skull, very temporary blindness, and, to top it off, an air bubble in my brain (gone today).

They dismissed me from the hospital the next day, but I didn't want to leave because they had a PlayStation.

EDIT: Fixed a couple typos.

When it's non right wing white people doing that in the US, they call it terrorism.

Random dungeons/landmarks - should I engage them? Or should I leave them be because they might be important to the story later. by Bripocalypsein skyrim

[–]Bripocalypse[S] 0 points1 point ago

This is incredibly detailed - thank you so much! I feel like such an idiot sometimes, I'm on my way via horse to some city, and it's taking forever to get to, so I just want to clear some dungeon along the way, but I always get scared that I'm closing out an opportunity. Anyways, this is incredibly helpful, so thanks so much.

Awesome, okay. That makes a lot of sense. I guess setting up a system like that is important for an open world game. Much appreciated.

Very cool, thanks a lot. I picked up what seems like some robot hearts from the Alftand quest and want to unload them, but was worried about that causing some harm down the road. Thanks for this heads up.

Does anyone else find it impossible to listen to music while they write? by broogenheimenin writing

Focused instrumental music is great for me. I made a Pandora station with "Explosions in the Sky" as the basis. It's done wonders, for writing and editing.
