California Governor Jerry Brown has signed an ambitious new bill into law that requires the state to source 33% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020. by greentechdudein energy

I like how people in this thread think this is a requirement for individuals to generate electricity from renewables rather than the utilities. As a note, he raised the requirement from 20% to 33% because the utilities were going to hit the 20% ahead of time.

Compared to coil, oil and natural gas. They deliberately left off solar and wind, among others. They may not be as efficient at generating electricity but they are certainly safe.

Holy shit, do people not understand that the bottom 50% pay most of their taxes in the form of payroll taxes and other taxes, not income tax?

I read the order and didn't see ant of that. Care to enlighten me as to where your ideas are coming from?

Douglas County School District, Colorado’s third largest school district, recently announced that it will be bringing on a total of 3.1 megawatts (MW) in solar power generating capacity via projects at 31 different sites, with no upfront costs projected. by greentechdudein energy

I think it was prett clear that's not what I was suggesting. We need to invest in and find a viable alternative to gasoline and diesel, separate from our investment in electrical generation.

Small world. My company did the electrical portion for both the Sun Towers and is about to start a portion of the Antelope Valley project. Strictly from an electrical contracting standpoint, they're both awesome projects.

I never said it wasn't subsidized, just that the school wasn't paying for it. Read my response to 1smartass for my take on energy subsidies.

I don't know the particulars of the agreement, but the utility usually pays retail prices for electricity in these agreements. If there is money coming from the utility, it's probably in the form of a direct subsidy/rebate, though that may come from the state and not the utility. In addition to that, there is a 30% federal tax credit. No money comes from the school.

I see these energy subsidy programs as a bad thing. Essentially the goverment is subsidizing infrastructure and the schools have found a way to make it benefit them as well.

These subsidies should be directed towards all form of generation. Hydrocarbon, renewable and nuclear should all be getting money poured into them. Alternatives to gasoline and diesel should be getting enormous funding as well.

The US needs to get a handle on its energy situation. Its grid is old, its generation methods are old and it has no viable longterm alternative gasoline and diesel.

TLDR; We're all gonna die.

You need to read up on PPAs. I'm an electrical contractor and work with them all the time for natural gas generation, fuel cells, solar, you name it. The school is guaranteed to pay a lower cost for electricity than the utility would provide it for. That's how it works.
