TIL Andrew Jackson was the only president to pay off the entire US debt, and it caused panic. by AlastairEvansin todayilearned

We still had debt but the budget went from a deficit to a surplus. The debt is the accumulation of yearly surpluses and deficits.

Anonymous donor endows Stanford OC position in honor of Andrew Luck. Now called "Andrew Luck Director of Offense" instead of "Offensive Coordinator". by jv27071in CFB

Facebook also went public on Friday so a number of Stanford grads (inspired by Derek Zoolander?) may have cash burning holes in their pockets.

To all the B1G (and I guess, other conference) fans shitting on Jim Delany for backing off of the home site playoff games: a rebuttal from BHGP by letsgetdenardedin CFB

I would replace Maryland with Georgia Tech but yeah, that would make the divisions more sensible geographically make the B1G basketball tournament a TON of fun.

BOMBSHELL: Facebook Bankers Secretly Cut Forecasts For Company In Middle Of IPO Roadshow by AllBurledOutin investing

Investment banking and research are separate. I am not defending it or anything but those two functions have had to be separate since like 2003, I think.

Am I the only one who thinks super conferences are a bad thing? by vondrewin CFB

[–]Blarvey 2 points3 points ago

That is what I don't understand about the idea of a four team playoff. Eight teams under most any scenario gets an undefeated TCU and Boise State in. Four teams, even from four different "superconferences," will probably leave out some undefeated team that is on the way up but ends up at the Gil's Palace of Electronics Bowl.

I was thinking the same thing except with Robocop.

Of late, they have given the B1G more basketball cred.

ceiling on BTN revenue

Wouldn't that depend on the members of the conference? For example, if some ACC schools joined the B1G (let's say UNC and Ga. Tech) then wouldn't BTN revenue increase as it is more widely available to 20mm+ people?

Facebook manages 0.03% gain on first day. Morgan Stanley bid heavily to ensure selling pressure would not drive the stock lower. by stream_fusionin Economics

No, and there is a 90 to 180 day lockup period for insiders so look for another offering between three and six months from now.

It all depends on how they use the money they raised. If they make smart acquisitions or expansions that grow earnings (Google buying youtube, building Android) then the stock could go up because the earnings growth justifies a higher multiple in part of models used to price the stock. If earnings remain flat and investors don't feel like capital is being properly allocated (RIMM's last two years) then it will go down.

Have you considered/would CBS permit releasing it at an earlier time on the net? I agree that the DVR/Netflix/web are hard to compete with but I would love to listen to or watch a stream when I am out for a walk or making dinner.

Facebook underwriters forced to step in to support stock at 38. Faith in market, +1 by Joe_12265in investing

[–]Blarvey 2 points3 points ago

My faith in the market was shaken when it was delayed three times and opening prints weren't reported until over two hours later. They said they tested it but what did they expect to happen when market orders weren't allowed on the open and millions of traders adjusted their prices at once?

1) Which coach has done the least with the most? 2) The most with the least? by archie_fin CFB

[–]Blarvey 0 points1 point ago

You are right. I should have said at ND. I know it takes time to implement a system and start winning, but with the talent that was there and came in under Kelly, I think ND should have had better seasons.

That said, they are one of the teams I think will breakthrough this year.

[–]Blarvey 4 points5 points ago

If we are going with current and former coaches:

1) Clemson's coaches (save for Swinney, I guess time will tell with him), Ron Zook, Charlie Weis and Brian Kelley, Derek Dooley (again, time will tell)

2) Gary Pinkel, Gary Patterson, Kirk Ferentz, Kyle Whittingham

Big Ten surrenders fight to bring college football playoff to the Midwest, just to help the Rose Bowl by papajustify25in CFB

[–]Blarvey 2 points3 points ago

That is what I have never understood about this whole thing. We haven't always had B1G vs. Pac 10/2 champion in the Rose Bowl, especially since the birth of the BCS. A four-team playoff at the higher seeded team's campus (or choice of location) can still put two top teams from each conference in the Rose Bowl. OSU skipped the Rose Bowl three times in the last decade to play in the NCG.

Are there any other divisions in college football that don't play at the higher seed's stadium in the early rounds of the playoffs?
