Went to the funeral of a family member this morning. Cheered myself up afterwards with a nice 25 mi ride into the countryside & spent the time remembering him & reminding myself how lucky I am to be alive, young & healthy.

Beet dessert pairing by nikkiyozin AskCulinary

[–]BellisBlueday 1 point2 points ago

Not a chef, but I had one of these on Saturday and it was delicious!

It was served with a wafer thin (almost see through) slice of sweetened beetroot stuck in the top like a feather, very pretty! along with creme fraiche, raspberry coulis and some extra raspberrys for good measure,

It looked great and tasted like heaven :D

Parker House Rolls = soft buttery bread rolls, apparently they have a 'traditonal' shape that they are supposed to have, but you can make the dough into any shape (rolls, buns, plaits) and it's all good.

Here's a recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/bobby-flay/parker-house-rolls-recipe2/index.html

Be warned, they are extremely moreish :)

It's the 'front garden' of the castle. If you turn around you'll be looking up the steps at it.

Adventure & Breadmaking (pictures resulting from my secret santa gift :) by BellisBluedayin Breadit

[–]BellisBlueday[S] 0 points1 point ago

I asked for something 'adventurous & breadmaking' in the cookbook exchange, my secret santa came through & gave me (amongst other things) an excellent bread book which I tried out yesterday.

I like olives & strong flavours, so as an experiment I added some Tapenade in addition to the usual black olives.

Interesting result - it definitely gives a very earthy flavour & saltiness, but gives does lend it a rather unfortunate grey colour :(

nvm - it is delicious, and I learned about 'oven spring'

Tht jacket was ridiculous :D

So I just did my first bike ride in years. I am totally out of shape and want to change that. A barely made it a mile before I got pretty tired, is that common when first starting out? by Krasesin bicycling

[–]BellisBlueday 0 points1 point ago

Still go on the ride, it will be motivating and a beginners one will go at an easy pace with stops. You might surprise yourself!

As others have said - check tyre pressure, seat height etc & use the easy gears (this is the key!!!) and make sure you eat something before you go and aren't dehydrated.

William Golding - Lord of the Flies

I read it in school, and it helped me realise how gods get created given the right conditions. I decided that I didn't believe in god or religion and have been an atheist ever since.

Barcelona is amazing.

I can heartily recommend Fat Tire Bike Tours as a good way to meet people and have a chilled pedal around the city to get your bearings (with a stop in the middle for sangria). I did this on my first day & it really helped me understand where everything was.

Parc Guell is a must, and though expensive, the open top bus tours are really excellently done. I also did the museum of Barcino (the Roman bit) if history is your thing it's essential.

Mostly I just wandered around, La Merce festival was on at the time, so saw loads of fun stuff - devils with fireworks shooting from their heads, kings and queens dancing ... totally unlike anything I'd seen before :D :D :D

"Spotting a ticket inspector is easy. They look just like you!". I've never seen any ticket inspecting on the tube. by infidel118iin london

[–]BellisBlueday 0 points1 point ago

I've never had my ticket checked in London.

Couple of interesting experiences from the continent though -

Paris - was checked twice in one day, once on the train & once at the gate @ Gare du Nord, both times the inspectors were uniformed

Berlin - was checked on the u-bahn by plain clothes inspectors, took me a moment to realise what was going on. Berlin doesn't have barriers on their S & U-bahn systems, consequently the fines are very steep (€650!!!)

Wynn Las Vegas is a $2.7 billion resort casino. This is their website. by languistin CrappyDesign

You know, I actually quite like it - cue the downvotes! :)

It looks like it would be more at home on a tv screen or tablet & as others have said - from an accessibility & HCI point of view it's pretty good. It's a bit strange to have the narration & music on every page, but it is a Vegas hotel (and tbh the guy's voice is lovely :)

Don't take a towel & definitely visit Versailles - make sure you get the ticket before you go though, the queues can be horrendous. You can buy tickets at FNACs in Paris & make sure you visit the gardens and Marie Antoinettes restreat too :)
