I think that sam ryan was claiming that military spending was gutted under Clinton so Bush needed to ramp up spending to get it back to acceptable levels.

Is the Governor Joking With California Taxpayers? by scpg02in California

[–]Badger68 1 point2 points ago

First, they believe they are overtaxed, and the figures bear this out. California ranks first in sales tax, second in gas tax and third in income tax rates. Even with Proposition 13, the state is well above the national average in per capita property tax collections.

Sales, gas and income tax rates support the idea that CA is a high tax State, but given that California has some of the most expensive, both overall and median, property in the US it should be expected that the average California property owner pay more in property taxes than your average Minnesota property owner.

NEW POLLING: 56% of Americans Want Legal Marijuana by erikNORMLin politics

[–]Badger68 0 points1 point ago

I don't find marijuana's nuances to be a reason for awkwardness in comparison with other agricultural products. The different strain effects in marijuana are generally a function of genetics and not the growing process. Keeping them straight should be no more difficult than keeping separate the seeds of the hundreds of varieties of heirloom tomatoes.

With legalization I think that price differentiation would continue, and a superior or well marketed product would demand a higher price than an average one. Taxes will be passed on to the consumer, but these taxes will be on top of a price that is much closer to the nearly negligible cost of production. Will a black market exist? Probably. One exists today in cigarettes in places like NYC where the taxes are high, but most New York smokers buy their tobacco from legal sources. I expect that it would be similar with marijuana.

I'm not sure why you say that the topic is usually decriminalization, the question that NORML asked in the poll was in regards to legalizing and California's Prop 19 was a legalization effort.

[–]Badger68 41 points42 points ago

If I'm understanding you correctly, you are saying that the costs of marijuana have not come down and even if the plant were legalized they would not come down. You seem to be comparing a totally illegal marijuana to partially illegal marijuana and assuming that the comparison tells us something about totally legal marijuana. I don't think that it does. Companies in the MMJ business are still operating illegally federally and thus their risks and costs are higher (the IRS doesn't even allow dispensaries to deduct their product costs from their taxes like every other business gets to do). The illegality of the growing and the risk of being caught by the DEA creates additional barriers to entry and increases prices along the supply chain. It also creates an incentive for plants to be grown inside where electricity is required rather than outside where the sun is free.

When thinking of the costs to run a dispensary (lights, payroll, stocking it with accessories) recall that marijuana is an agricultural product. The costs of running a physical store are not so high that tomatoes, apples and daisies are sold for anywhere near $350/oz.

CA's Prop 19 was just changing State law, not the constitution. It was also a flawed bill, with different standards for different counties, no cohesive statewide regulation and debatable language regarding the effect it would have on existing medical marijuana law. Many who have vocalized support for legal marijuana opposed prop 19.

Law enforcement gets money from asset forfeiture related to drug crimes. Black market marijuana growers and sellers get more money because of the inflated price that is the effect of a plant being banned and relegated to the black market. If they lose the black market (legalization) then profits go down.

A cheapo radio shack soldering iron will cost about $12. In the $20-$30 range you can get something decent.

Guitar cab left at rehearsal space, used a friends bass cab to surprising results. by maskakein Guitar

I don't own either of these products, but the SWR seems to be rated 4ohms and the Engl is also rated as safe for 4 ohms (if you plug the speakers into the correct output jack), so I don't think that you should have any problems.

(x-post from r/guitarlessons) I've been playing for 4 years, and I don't know a single solo. by Biggiltonin Guitar

[–]Badger68 1 point2 points ago

I've tried and the techniques seem almost alien to me. My fingers feel clumsy, and I can't really hit the notes fast enough.

Slow it down. Way down. Don't even worry about timing at first, just get your fingers to practice making the right motions, making the right noises with nothing extra or missing. After your muscle memory picks up the patterns of motion then try to get the feel/timing right and slowly increase the speed to the speed of the song.

Actually, most States require you to self report your online purchases and pay the appropriate tax directly to the state. Most people don't accurately report these purchases, but States are becoming more aggressive in going after that money.

Bone-in-chicken but no oven. What do I do? by smackythefrogin Cheap_Meals

[–]Badger68 2 points3 points ago

There is no need at all for bone in chicken to be cooked in the oven. Just like in the oven, getting the middle cooked is simply a function of time. Chicken parts in a pan will fully cook in a lot less time than a whole chicken in the oven. You could easily pan fry your chicken in a small amount of fat, no breading necessary. Frying then braising is another tasty option. If you wish you can easily debone chicken after cooking and then mix it with rice and vegetables, or you could leave it on the bone and set it on top of the accompaniments. Whichever way you prefer. You can certainly boil chicken or make soup. Poaching chicken, cooking it in a liquid with salt, herbs and spices of your choice, is also flavorful.

Here are a couple of stovetop chicken recipes from Julia Child that you should be able to easily make. (sorry about the second link format, just copy and paste the whole thing)

[–]Badger68 0 points1 point ago

I never made it to a shopping cart page. My thought, and there may be business reasons that I am unaware of why one may not wish to do this, is something like an additional column on the price board giving the total qty in stock. 10 seems like a fairly small number to have the limit set at, as purchases will often be for a larger number.

I've always thought that displaying the quantity in stock would be a good and useful addition to an item listing or the price board. Purchasing decisions can be affected by knowledge of available inventory levels.

Tech Bubble Death Watch: The Facebook IPO by Piscator629in technology

You don't think being shiny and relatively permanent are intrinsic values? It has uses in electronics and other industrial processes. Are you imagining an authoritarian future where no one is allowed to own gold jewelry (with no back market), or do you think that all humans will for some reason stop valuing shiny jewelry, that they would just give you all theirs simply because you asked? I would have no problem giving away something that is worthless.

Tech Bubble Death Watch: The Facebook IPO by Piscator629in technology

[–]Badger68 0 points1 point ago

Whats to stop people from saying "gold is worthless. I don't want to buy any of it."?

The fact that it's shiny and doesn't rust or tarnish. For 6000 years or so humans have generally liked things that are shiny and don't rust or tarnish, and there aren't all that many of these things available to us. People can say "gold is worthless. I don't want to buy any of it" but they will probably be in the minority. At some price some people are going to want to buy it off you. I cannot imagine a future where gold is widely considered worthless, though I don't deny the possibility that it may someday be worth less than its present value.

WTO Discriminates Against The Public's Right to Choose by Ruling Dolphin Safe Tuna Labeling Illegal. by 0ldGreggin environment

"Dolphin Safe Tuna" is not without environmental problems of its own. The dolphin safe method seems to protect the dolphins at the expense of increasing the by-catch of other species of sea life, many of whom are endangered. Check out this article.
