The Facebook Fallacy -- "Facebook is not only on course to go bust, but will take the rest of the ad-supported Web with it." It's a marketing business, run by geeks. It's not the next Google, it's the next AOL by phileconomicusin business

[–]Ardentfrost 3 points4 points ago

Facebook can have 900m pairs of eyes. Doesn't mean they will have a lot of money.

That's pretty much exactly my point.

Worth must be based on something, that's why we have things like P/E ratios and shit, to help the market decide valuation. But my point was that FB apparently made ~$1B last year, and suddenly they're supposed to be worth 100x that when they go public? It never added up.

And my statement above was born of the fact that FB's product is its 900m users (plus whatever perceived growth) and their customers are companies who want to hock their goods at those users (and other things like selling user data to market research companies or whatever else, but you get the idea). You can look at a car company's ability to get product to market and selling that product and making a profit to guide your hand on stock valuation. But how can anyone say that FB's 900m users (+growth) will be able to be monetized in a way that makes the company worth $100b on the market?

That's my issue with the whole thing. It simply doesn't make sense. It never did.

On the other hand, I feel a similar way about Apple ("How can they sell the same product to the same group of people every year and that not make the market nervous?") but I've been completely wrong about them for a few years now. They've just been inexplicably bulletproof.

I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just saying that the FB thing blows my mind.

That right there is where the math simply doesn't add up (at least for me). 900m users purported to make the company worth $104b? So each user is essentially worth ~$100? Their revenue shows it to be closer to $1 per user, so no clue why the valuation was EVER 100x that.

My little girl has blocks which she loves... however, she also likes the purse her grandmother got her. She puts it on her arm all prissy and says "bye!" and saunters off. My wife and I have no clue where she learned that.

I gotta stop reading all this shit. I have a 20 month old daughter, and you guys (gals*) are scaring the shit out of me. I gotta go cry, now, and figure out how I'm going to train her to be aware of these types of situations without making her scared to leave the house.

[–]Ardentfrost 4 points5 points ago

Sorry, the way I originally wrote it made more sense, I don't know why I changed it. What I meant to say was that BEFORE 2004, it doesn't appear they had done anything. Edison's quote must've been many decades prior to that.

What's weird about that is GE (Edison's company) hasn't done anything with solar that I can find. They have a solar division that looks like the biggest thing it's ever done was acquire a bankrupt solar company in 2004.

You'd think that if he was really into solar, he'd have been hiring engineers to work on it. There were a number of people doing that stuff around at the same time as him. I guess he supported it in theory, but saw no value in actually pursuing it financially.

It's a shame. With his resources and penchant for hiring smart people, he probably could have affected that industry.

I'd love to put grass (or something similar) on my roof, but part of the problem is the few inches of soil I'd put on my roof wouldn't hold as much water as the ground, so either I'd have to constantly water my roof, or they'd all die. On top of that, my roof slopes so presumably nutrients would drain away over time, making the soil barren.

I think some climates and roof shapes would make it work fairly well, but not mine. Man, I'd probably save boatloads on cooling costs if I could have grass on my roof, though.

Oh, right, also most ordinances in America don't allow it anyway.

EDIT: Oh, right, mowing (or otherwise tending)... that'd also be difficult. Maybe if I could get roof chickens, that'd be awesome.

So, I just discovered r/DIY and thought I'd share this. In 2007, my family and I (mostly my dad) put in our own in-ground pool with an 8-foot deep end. We put a LOT of work into it and saved thousands of dollars. Here is an album of the whole process. by LogicaRexin DIY

[–]Ardentfrost 4 points5 points ago

From my understanding it's cheaper because you avoid sewer cost. I know on my water bill, the sewer cost per 1k gallons is just under the cost of the actual water. eg, presumably you could save nearly half the cost of using a garden hose.

All that is what I've heard from others who own pools, though.

slept through my final exam. emailed my professor about it. got this back. by redhotfirecrotchin funny

[–]Ardentfrost 0 points1 point ago

I once nearly slept through an exam. I was taking a pretty full load that semester, and my programming class (second level OOP, which I found pretty easy) was late in the week. I had studied so much leading up to that day that I was exhausted and the alarm simply had no chance of making a dent in sleepy time.

One of my roommates, who I pretty much held his hand to a B in the same class, woke up early to study a bit outside the classroom before the exam started. He noticed pretty quickly that I was no where around when the exam started. I have to hand it to him, normally he was always last one to finish tests, running time out going over and over his answers, but this day he took the fastest exam of his life, rushed back to our apartment, and woke me up. I ran as fast as I could and made it to the exam with about 30 minutes left in the exam period. Only a few people were still in the room.

I walked in, probably looked a total mess, the prof looked at me kinda wide-eyed and handed me the exam. Thank God I was good at that class, still made an A.

The term that describes what they're doing is LTL.

And it's quite smart on their part. There's no shortage of LTL shipments, so they just sell a home owner X feet of space headed from Y source to Z destination, and then sell the 53-X feet of remaining space to anyone else who needs LTL anywhere between Y and Z. For them to maximize profits, they will optimally have the other shipments very close to Z destination, unless they do flat rate shipping, then they'll hope it's closer to Y which would save on gas. Also potentially pick up more shipments along the route.

I can't be too helpful here, but I'll say that a month or so ago I went to a local bakery and tried their oatmeal creme pies. They were two tasty oatmeal cookies with cream cheese frosting in the middle. It was delicious. It was all I could do to not go buy them out of that particular confection.

[–]Ardentfrost 0 points1 point ago

Well, a few things:

  • The bees are there for pollination, not for harvesting.

  • Bees are interested in flowers, not fruit/nuts.

  • Bees are not aggressive and only sting when smacked/swatted or if you go jacking with their house.
