We are the Borg… And That is a Good Thing by Roonin Transhuman

[–]AndrewKemendo 0 points1 point ago

He makes a bad assumption about coming to transhumanism through scifi. I can't stand scifi but here I am. Indeed, it's only been as I'm trying to resolve some of the issues related with the singularity that I have read some things like player piano and MOPI.

PhD student, interested in joining AirGuard. Are there jobs for geologists? by michellexmaryin AirForce

[–]AndrewKemendo 0 points1 point ago

Finish your PhD, decide to join later.

If you are 29 now you will be too old to enter pilot training without a waiver and waivers are exceptionally rare for age. Guard has similar restrictions but are easier to waiver into. You could however fly for the Army comfortably within age restrictions. I would dismiss that idea. Plus if you just like flying you can have more fun at it flying civilian on your own for fun.

The Air Force does have a developmental scientist job which can encompass things like geology, however you would probably not be doing much geology.

What is it specifically that is fascinating about the Air Force? I will tell you this, whatever gloss you see now will wear off quickly so you will need to be in it for much more than the "cool factor."

Also, finish your PhD.

What do you expect for an organization who let themselves be forced into an IPO?

China can now bypass Wall Street when buying U.S. government debt and go straight to the U.S. Treasury, in what is the Treasury's first-ever direct relationship with a foreign government by TheCrimsonKingin Economics

[–]AndrewKemendo -6 points-5 points ago

The privilege may help China obtain U.S. debt for a better price by keeping Wall Street's knowledge of its orders to a minimum.

...and as we all know, less information in the market leads to a more efficient market. I think de soto proved that in one of his books.

Statistical Illiteracy: American Community Survey, used to distribute gov't funding for public health and education, is “not a scientific survey. It’s a random survey", according to Daniel Webster, R-FL. by prionattackin statistics

[–]AndrewKemendo 1 point2 points ago

I think these representatives have no idea that the average person cannot handle the amount of data that they would have to sift through to maintain their same lifestyle.

The reality is, the majority of libertarians/market anarchists wouldn't survive without the systems we have in place.

Back in the states now.

I would suggest thats kind of a global thing though

Absolutely - though straight up racism is in my opinion hard to find. I can't remember who exactly the host was, something like mike or joe tomahiri.

I drove all around NZ for two weeks in 2008.

Listening to the radio, there was a distinct anti-Maori bent to a good number of the presenters.

Facebook manages 0.03% gain on first day. Morgan Stanley bid heavily to ensure selling pressure would not drive the stock lower. by stream_fusionin Economics

[–]AndrewKemendo 8 points9 points ago

People seem to fail to understand this. Offering public stock is the way financiers and owners shift risk to people who have little recourse for poor performance. Arguably this is made more clear if owners cash out, but sadly often owners fall victim to this from the ventures setting them up. Zuck is a prime example of someone who was set up to be steamrolled but got smart enough to (apparently) cash out.

  • ask smart questions
  • come up with solutions not more problems

Oh shit, cause all this time I have been thinking up bullshit lists and questions for those who ask them and trying to find more problems for each one I have.

As though there are people out there knowingly doing the opposite of that list.

10 TOP BUSINESS MODELS FOR NEW VENTURES TODAY by lesleydin startups

[–]AndrewKemendo 0 points1 point ago

Product or service is free, revenue from ads and critical mass.

I could never be comfortable with this way of doing business. Why? Because it is based on the swarm of fickle marketing budgets. I realize that just as with affiliate marketing, there is a ton of money out there that is being thrown around for marketing purposes.

I just don't think effective marketing actually delivers for what it costs (yes I took marketing courses at university) and that is what every marketer hopes for - but like religion, money and sports, as long as people believe in its value, it will continue to be paid for and create revenue and an industry.

I think the veneer is wearing on the facebook marketing effectiveness as we approach IPO with .05 percent or some ungodly low number of conversions.

Saw this today and was wondering what other think about this - US veterans to medals in protest by fuzzusmaximusin Military

[–]AndrewKemendo 1 point2 points ago

I wonder why it seems that it is always reserve/guard folks doing this stuff (note the F-22 bubbas from 60 minutes). I haven't done any statistical analysis but it seems to me just from gut feel that these folks do this much more frequently. Am I alone in this? I'm curious what others think.

whats the culture of the australian army by aggresivelyaveragein Military

[–]AndrewKemendo 0 points1 point ago

I can only speak for the RAAF.

In my experiences with them they have been on par with US with respect to the competence of their personnel. That means it runs the gamut, however I was very impressed by the competencies that all the folks I worked with displayed.

They have fewer cool toys, have a much smaller system to rely on for supply and logistics and their scope is much more limited. They go to a lot of the same schools that we do, and because they are FVEY they get much of the same information - though certainly not all.

The one difference I did note was that they do not hold their officer corp to the same fitness standards as we do, but even then the margins are pretty narrow.
