Freedom Explained by bracomadarin atheism

But, this is irrelevant if marriage is not a part of the government (like I was arguing), as straight married couples would not be getting these benefits either.

Freedom Explained by bracomadarin atheism

Well, no. Marriage doesn't have to have anything to do with religion. Marriage can be a symbolistic commitment to one another, entirely secularly. You don't need the state or the church to get "married."

The Walking Dead comic readers, how good are the comics? by [deleted]in thewalkingdead

[–]AndrewIndie 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, and they've had 90+ issues to flesh out those characters; whereas the TV show has had all of 15 episodes. I gave the books a chance--hell, I wanted to love them, even had the other six in my Amazon cart waiting--and the first didn't pay off whatsoever. I gave it 12 issues worth of shots (maybe comparable to watching 6-ish episodes of a show [essentially the first season]), and in the end, I had no want to read the others. The dialogue was painfully contrived and often eye-rollingly bad (and admittedly, there have been instances of this in the TV series, though much, much less for me). Beyond this, the events of the books felt inconsequential--commonly, a page or two later no one would mention an event that should've left more of an impact.

Twelve chances to hook me, and nothing.

The Walking Dead comic readers, how good are the comics? by [deleted]in thewalkingdead

Yeah, I'm going to agree with this. The comics were plain and emotionless to me. Comparing the characters from the TV shows and the characters as portrayed in the comics, and it's almost sad; the comic characters are flat and generally uninteresting to me. It all felt a little too contrived. Granted, I have only read Book 1 (the first twelve issues), but after finishing it, I decided to just stick with the TV show.

What the hell is that book about? The Complete American Tax Code?

A question for fellow book nerds: by chobiiin bookshelf

[–]AndrewIndie 0 points1 point ago

Alphabetically by first author's last name. No author? Use the editor's last name, unless it's a series (Best American Essays, etc. with different editors; in this case sub the series name for an author name, omitting articles).

Multiple books from same author? Do this chronologically.

Is there a "Rotten Tomatoes" for books? by vbaidan123in books

[–]AndrewIndie 15 points16 points ago

Really?! I like their quote system, but their reviews are trash. They have Twilight listed as the best book of all-time... (http://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1.Best_Books_Ever) In fact, withholding two books, the entire top 10 is just series books, which is pretty absurd. No Joyce? No DFW? No Dostoevsky? It's at best a pop-book website.

Sorry, to get upset about the site. Their lists annoy the hell out of me.

Book Suggestion to make me love reading again? by OrbisNonSufficitin books

Yeah, I was going to suggest A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers until I saw that they wanted a series...

Also, Tinkers is a great book.

Found a first edition copy of Infinite Jest at a local bookstore. by TheEleventhDoctorin books

[–]AndrewIndie 0 points1 point ago

Damn. It is a hardcover though, and I read "first edition" and... well, here I am now. I got it fairly cheap, so it wasn't any sort of financial folly, I suppose.

Outside of this I have hardcover first editions of DFW's A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again (fourth printing), Brief Interviews with Hideous Men (third printing), Oblivion (first printing), Consider the Lobster (fifth printing), and The Pale King (first printing).

As far as other book collections I have, my DFW is still the most impressive, I suppose. The others are more sporadically collected and I don't know their printing. I do have a first edition, first printing of Fight Club that the Strand offered to buy for something like 120$ while I was in NYC last summer.

Just bought a pristine first edition of "Infinite Jest" for super cheap. by AndrewIndiein books

[–]AndrewIndie[S] 1 point2 points ago

Weird as it may seem, I bought it from Amazon over my winter break. (http://www.amazon.com/Infinite-Jest-David-Foster-Wallace/dp/0316920045/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0?ie=UTF8&qid=1327090540&sr=8-1) I was super skeptical of it actually being a first edition, but bought it anyway as I wanted a HC version of Infinite Jest, and low and behold, it was a genuine first edition.
