More Korean football nickname/memes: El Clasico! by AnWrootbeerin soccer

[–]AnWrootbeer[S] 0 points1 point ago*

Korea and Turkey are indeed tight (especially when it comes to football fans), but ozil's popularity has more to do with his name.

His name is 외질 in Korean. If you reverse the letters, it becomes 질외, which is short form for "pulling out"

so... we have a player whose nickname means "pulling out". I don't want to have to explain why him scoring a goal is such a big deal :P

K-league's Incheon United defeated Daejeon Citizen in a home game. Afterwards... (explanation in reply) by AnWrootbeerin soccer

Incheon's mascot made "Go home" gestures to Daejeon supporters, pissing them off and making two of them run out and beat the shit out of the mascot. Afterwards Incheon and Daejeon fans clashed

think of it this way - "we criticize you because we care about you".

you won't see Koreans talk crap about, lets say, Westham, because its a still relatively unknown club. if John Terry cheats on his wife then everyone cares - if some player in championship league did, who the fuck cares (except for his wife)? why do you think Koreans make fun of C-naldo so much? because he is a world top class player so people are always focused on his every move. same thing for Barca - their players may have some negative nicknames, but at least they're loved and hated enough to have all those nicknames/memes associated with them.

tldr - negative nicknames =/= team is hated in Korea, in fact they're famous enough to be discussed by thousands of people in a country far far away :)

actually the name red devils refers to official supporters of korean national team. Wikipedia says the group first gathered online then decided on the name "Red Devils" through a poll in 1997. this was way before european football leagues were well known to the public, but since these people cared enough about football to form supporter group, its possible that ManU influence is there.

Ji's nickname is Chamchi, meaning tuna. Simply because Dong Won is a famous canned tuna brand (its a national nickname for anyone with the name Dong Won, shows how much people associate canned tuna with that name). Sunderland is still pretty new to Korean fans, they just opened Korean webpage only few months ago.

Villas Boas - Bo Kawng Rae. Named after ex-Korean national team head coach Jo Kwang Rae, who also got sacked after a series of unfortunate events. They're both famous for trying to fit players into their strategy rather than forming a strategy that fits the players.

sidenote, Villas Boas was a huge fan of football manager.

I think so too, but many arent happy about his offensive performance, plus manu only won one game out of like 10 where park started. Its mostly because park has supportive/defensive style with emphasis on creating space and not so much on scoring/assisting. Tldr people like to see stats

Hiddink - God himself in humanform. He only allows his teams the honour of semifinals and no more, for he wishes not to disturb human society too much.

coaches:

SAF - commonly referred to as just Ferguson, or Gum-guson by fans. Another popular nickname is 영감탱이(young gam taeng ee), a negative slang for an old man (could translate to 'old fart'?). Park Ji Sung called him that after he didnt start for Champs final a few seasons back - Ferguson said something like "It was really hard to exclude Park from starters" and Park told his father "That old fart ALWAYS says that about players that didn't get to play"

Wenger - Pedo. Nuff said

going to continue this in washroom

football is super popular, especially national team matches. its just that baseball league has been booming for last 6-7 years so people who are neutral on sports just follow baseball. so I would say football is no.2 sports in Korea atm

Busquets is Boo-Kkakkoong after his famous dive/peep.

Henry is super popular in Korea. There was this famous internet personality with ID "HenryGirl". She was a highschool student who loved Henry so much that she would make thread asking if Henry was ever coming to Korea or if his wife was planning on leaving him. She became famous for her... consistency. Not sure why I put Henry under Barca though.

Puyol is made fun of for having ajumma pama, a typical middle-aged-lady haircut.

Iniesta is "Inhye", which is his name shortened to sound like a Korean name. it is also a running joke that his skills come from his autism.

of course theres a lot of stuff about barca, they're on headlines of sports section all the time! One that pops in my head is "loser" for Messi. Some girl said on a Korean TV show that "men under 6ft are losers" which became national issue. People started joking about how Messi must be a loser because hes short even though he destroys tall players all the time. Its either that or "Me-nuneam" which is Messi + Lord.
