Computer Science or Information Technology? by kjaonlinein compsci

IT: you are expendable and easily replaceable. CS: You build tools and are valuable. 2x the pay of IT.

CS can eventually do both. Go for CS.

I designed a logo for a Hobie Cat race for school. How did I do? by goodeyemitein sailing

[–]Alives 1 point2 points ago

Doesnt the trap wire go to the top of the mast?

Hobies also have a jib.

The mainsail also has battens, so it probably wouldn't be as "loose" as that.

Just being nit-picky... that stuff really doesnt matter since people will get the idea regardless, and the logo is fine and looks good.

Yeah, I'd say I like the one about the Redwoods, and the one by the stroke doctor who explained what it was like for her to have a stroke.

YSK that releasing helium balloons in the wild is extremely harmful to wildlife, especially the oceans. by Alivesin YouShouldKnow

[–]Alives[S] 7 points8 points ago

They eat them and die. It's a useless practice. It would be equivalent to throwing poison out your car window just because its fun to do.

It serves no real purpose.

Arguably, those balloons probably won't make it to the ocean, so it's potentially less harmful, but still.. I'd say it's still pretty bad.

I am amazed at how many arguments among my friends this has generated... really people... regardless of the issues, what is releasing a balloon going to solve anyway?

IAmA Former 911 Operator ... I'll share everything. by pros599in IAmA

[–]Alives 0 points1 point ago

I just traveled to Europe and realized I had no idea what the emergency number was in the country I was in. I figured there was a chance if I just dial 911 it might work. Is there some international standard number? What if the emergency code in country X is 112... would that ring through to 911 in the US?

Follow up question: Is there some movement to standardize the numbers internationally?

Six floor walk ups, Bronx NY [1024x601] by [deleted]in CityPorn

Actually the title wasn't referencing them... more referencing the fact that you have to walk up 6 flights of stairs inside.

If you live there, you have to walk up and down 6 flights of stairs any time you leave. It wears on you heavily. Not only that, but this is typically what the Bronx in parts looks like.

IT manager at wits end and needs advice by self_taught_geekin sysadmin

[–]Alives 0 points1 point ago

Sometimes coming from that position your skillset can be 'embellished' a bit. Before you pick your path, it might be good to try some interviews and see where you already know the most... webdev vs sysadmin vs netadmin etc.

Ideally you would get a friend to walk through some scenarios with you and see how deep your knowledge really goes. It may turn out that you know a lot about web dev but not as much as you thought about sysadmin (compared to the general interviewing pool of people looking for jobs, the ones you'd be up against).

In this situation it may also be wise to accept a lower qualified job than you think you are worth (a job that you would think is beneath you). This can be quite good... you will immediately be kicking ass and will probably promote up quickly, and you will start off being more familiar and less uncomfortable. The pay will be lower, but it might actually match what you are getting now since you said you have had cuts. This will also let you pick a more comfortable upward trajectory in the new company as you figure out more about what you really like. Compare this strategy to getting a new job that is slightly above your level and freaking out daily that you arent performing well enough and having your peers and managers possibly feel like they made a mistake.

My advice is to 1) find out what your strengths are by interviewing or talking to a knowledgeable outside source, 2) find a new job in a larger company if possible and start 1 level below where you think you should be, 3) kick ass and quickly promote up.

You may also be able to work for one of those outsourced IT firms that handle IT for many companies at once (EDS etc).

Good luck. Think of this as a good thing... even though it's stressful now, you'll look back and probably be happy with your choices. Just take time and do what feels right. Try not to rush into something you don't like.
