I've heard ubuntu.com is pretty nice.

Does anyone use X11 forwarding over SSH to run GUI programs through a terminal connection? by rbmichaelin linux

Why not just use a VPN connection and route all traffic through that? Any particular reason for choosing to run it over SSH vs VPN?

How do you hire your IT professionals? by trouphazin sysadmin

[–]AfroResurrection 0 points1 point ago

"Which is a better password, "!Qn1nja" or "Ihavealongdamnpassword"?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of position is this for? Is it just a catch-all "System Administrator" type of position or do you have different levels where the questions very in difficulty according to whatever level you're hiring for?

Has urban camping become a thing yet? With that, a clip board, and a little social engineering this may just pan out.

I kid, I kid. Seriously though, I'll give your contest a shot if not purely for the feedback.

What does your PS1 environment variable look like? by AfroResurrectionin sysadmin

Surely there's some way to customize the prompt in powershell, no? Or is that what the "PS" stands for?

Pardon my ignorance, but is it possible to get into LISA as an unconnected commoner? I haven't attended the conference before, the website doesn't list cost/ticket sale information, and I hate unnecessarily getting my hopes up for this kind of promotion.

Is it wrong that I've actually done the whole doughnut thing at my job? The difference is that they were out in the open, I ended up throwing it out (potentially tasty doughnut turned into guilt doughnut), and have learned to do the opposite of what my gut tells me when it comes to food.

Doesn't the top bar just display suggestions for the most-visited subreddits if you don't manage your subreddit subscriptions? I mostly just visit /r/sysadmin but it still displays /r/politics by default. Maybe an experiment is in order...

Forty years of solitude. Well-written piece about two men getting old and going slowly mad in 9ft-by-6ft cells. by panicjamesin TrueReddit

He said 30 days in detention, not solitary. I'm assuming the two are different.

Not if you want a virtual private cloud. Also, tread lightly or devour the fine print because there are lots of little "gotchas" that can rack up fees.

Ext3 vs ext4 filesystem on an external hard drive. by AfroResurrectionin linux

[–]AfroResurrection[S] 0 points1 point ago

That's what I had done. So the proper way to do it would be to cfdisk /dev/sdb, add a boot partition, then change to /dev/sdb1 and add a partition for an lvm group?

Probably should have mentioned I've been trying to get started on Linux From Scratch.

It actually gives me the warning message:

sdb is the entire device, not just one partition!

Proceed anyway?

Ext3 vs ext4 filesystem on an external hard drive. by AfroResurrectionin linux

[–]AfroResurrection[S] 0 points1 point ago

I used mkfs.ext4 on each partition (/dev/sdb, /dev/sdb1, /dev/sdb2, etc). Gparted has been of great use for visualizing the results post-partition.

[–]AfroResurrection[S] 0 points1 point ago

Hmm before I had written the entire /dev/sdb device itself with a filesystem before moving on to the partitions. I'm using gparted at this point for a visual guide and have reformatted but could that have had anything to do with it?

I think you may be right. I reformatted it and am going to continue playing with it today, if anything continues to be amiss I'll update you with the fdisk output.
