For r/AskEngineers rules: Can we put something in the sidebar with a huge ass font saying "PROVIDE A DRAWING"? by Fearlessleader85in AskEngineers

Don't get too comfortable - next time I'll just ban you.

:)

Yes. I'm going to stop short of requiring it, but I'll add it shortly. Can't right at this moment though.

I've been wanting to revamp the sidebar anyway so this is as good of a time as any.

Correction on a detail, but it's an important detail. It stands for limited liability company, not corporation. An LLC can be organized and taxed as a corporation, but they don't have to be. This allows the owners of the LLC to have a lot of flexibility in its structure.

Study shows that pavement deflection under vehicle tires makes for a continuous uphill drive that increases fuel consumption by AParanoidEmuin engineering

[–]AParanoidEmu[S] 2 points3 points ago

Possibly, but I think harder roads are more prone to cracking and more expensive (concrete), especially for lightly-traveled rural roads. But, I'm not a roadway engineer so my knowledge is limited. The article did mention increasing thicknesses and/or layering roads with stiffer materials as possible solutions.

I just thought it was a pretty insightful study, since considering the road's deflection's effect on fuel economy doesn't seem like an obvious line of thought (to me, at least).

How far do you hit the ball? You're probably lying... by seans9in golf

Do you mean swing speed x 1.5 + 100?

Because 110 x 1.5 = 165, but 110 x 1.5 + 100 = 265.

Rough day on the course today. by pjk246in golf

[–]AParanoidEmu 0 points1 point ago

Everyone has those days. Last week, I shot a 39 on the front nine, which is pretty astonishing considering my best for nine before that was probably 44 or 45.

Then I embarrass myself on the back nine with a 54. Whoops.

I can't believe you still have that flair tag.

I didn't mean an email, the term slipped out somehow. I meant private message.

You are a clever (wo)man.

It's a valid point perhaps. I of course don't have any idea what this would add for server loads. But, when you think of all the orangereds that are sent for every single comment reply, I can't help but think this would only increase that volume a couple percent at most.

Two books by Gilbert Strang are good:

  • Computational Science and Engineering (2007)

  • Introduction to Applied Mathematics (1986)

Abuse of the "report" link should be mitigated similar to vote-flooding. by ContheorySpiracistin ideasfortheadmins

banning a spammer is an administrative act, not a moderation act.

Banning a spammer sitewide is an admin act, yes. But you can ban him from your particular subreddit(s).

And yes, the report feature is easily abused and should have some sort of abuse protection.

Salary question. Project Engineer. by Dunbar22in AskEngineers

[–]AParanoidEmu 1 point2 points ago

It depends on the company and industry. But, in general, it often refers to an engineer who is a sort-of project manager strictly for engineering related aspects. For example, coordinating work between disciplines, interfacing with client engineers, working on higher-level system design (similar to a systems engineer in some industries), and drafting project-wide specs. For just a few examples of duties.

There are probably project engineers out there who hardly do what I just described, but I think it's fairly representative.
