How about instead of dictating more etiquette rules to an ever-dwindling modern audience for concert music, we disseminate a more common-sense approach: the music is for everyone present - the players, conductor and audience - and everyone should be mutually respectful of each others' full enjoyment of the music. If someone's phone goes off during the second movement of the appassionata that's one thing, but if someone feels moved to clap after a movement or whistle at the end of a great performance that should be allowed. Berlioz didn't give a fuck about concert etiquette - why should we?
