Here you go. I found a rip of the original sound track and extracted the segment you wanted using Audacity. Audacity is pretty straightforward to use -- I'm sure you can pick up how to edit mp3 files after trying it.

Battery fuzz... by dck47in Autos

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From Wikipedia:

Corrosion at the battery terminals can prevent a car from starting due to electrical resistance. The white powder sometimes found around the battery terminals is usually lead sulfate which is toxic by inhalation, ingestion and skin contact. The corrosion is caused by an imperfect seal between the plastic battery case and lead battery post allowing sulfuric acid to react with the lead battery posts. The corrosion process is also expedited by over charging. Corrosion can also be caused by factors such as salt water, dirt, heat, humidity, cracks in the battery casing or loose battery terminals. Inspection, cleaning and protection with a light coating of dielectric grease are measures used to prevent corrosion of battery terminals.

There are certain chemicals that regulate the expression of gender in dioecious plants. For example, ethylene serves as a regulator of sex expression in cucumbers. Careful study has revealed that silver thiosulfate is an inhibitor of ethylene. Thus it is possible to influence the expression of gender of a plant using artificial means.

According to this text, cycads have been known to change gender after experiencing trauma. It is only a matter of time before the particular chemical that regulates sex expression in cycads is isolated. Some day E. woodi will enjoy the company of others again.

Workshop Lighting -- Working on setting up my workshop and came across and interesting post about T8,T5, and LED Lighting on Ben Krasnow's Blog by ReidJDin electronics

HID lighting is still the best price / performance leader. You can buy used fixtures that have solid state ballasts off eBay that are priced less than what it would cost to buy the ballast separately. They are usually set up for track lighting but rewiring is easy. The leads to the proprietary connector are usually wired up using simple wire nuts. Color rendering is also excellent if you stick with ceramic metal halide burners.

Hate to drag politics into this discussion, but how on earth does the Tea Party have such a booming voice, let alone ears to hear them in the United States?

The same interests that fund the Tea Party and shape its discourse also fund many of the media outlets in the United States. Mark Ames and Yasha Levine ran quite a few stories on this at The Exiled.

I wouldn't call the policy stupid. Retailers have to pay 2% of each transaction to banks to cover the costs of processing and interchange fees when a credit card is used (source). Costco can lower its prices accordingly by not having to deal with those fees.

It is also worth noting that the average household income of a Costco shopper is $74,000 (31% make over $100,000) so it isn't as likely that they would need to finance a purchase with credit compared to a Walmart customer.

Aside from financing, the other benefit of making a purchase via credit cards is the additional consumer protection they offer. Costco has a very generous return policy so it is unlikely that one would have to make use of those benefits. Why pay more for something that you would never use?

12 *MILLION* year old breed of cat; they cannot be domesticated. by randomfemalein reddit.com

[–]2710p 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With many experts repeating the notion that cats domesticated themselves (e.g. more than 6,000 hits on Google for that exact phrase) , I cannot help but wonder if it may be due in part to the influence of Toxoplasma gondii on feline behavior. It is well established that T. gondii infected rodents lose their aversion to the pheromones in feline urine but what, if any, behavioral changes occur in cats? There doesn't seem to be much available on that side of the subject. This Cornell page states personality changes in cats can result from infection, but that deals with domesticated cats. What I really would like to know is if T. gondii elicits a significant behavioral change in feral cats compared to their non-infected counterparts.

You could get an iPad data-only plan with AT&T (250 MB for $14.99 or 2 GB for $25.00) and then set up VOIP service on your GSM phone to make calls.

It is really easy to integrate Google Voice to do this on Android now using GrooVe IP. The other option is to tinker around with sipdroid and third party providers like pbxes and sipgate.

As a side benefit to all this, you'll never have to pay to send or receive texts again as they all go through Google Voice via the Google Voice app.

If you are from an area that uses road salt, I would avoid. Old Hondas are great cars but they are very susceptible to rust. Note how many Hondas have rusty rear quarter panels near the wheel well. If you don't have to worry about road salt here's some other drawbacks to consider:

  • The popularity of older Hondas and their rudimentary anti-theft devices also means that they are stolen frequently. The Accord, Civic, and Integra (uses the same platform as the Civic) are all perennial listings on the top ten most stolen vehicles reports.

  • Older Honda vehicles use a timing belt to control valve timing and their engines use an interference design. This means if the belt isn't replaced on time and breaks while in operation, the valves and the pistons collide, effectively ruining the engine. It costs a few hundred dollars in labor to replace a timing belt so many people forgo the repair until it is too late. When buying used, factor timing belt replacement into the cost of the vehicle.

  • Side impact protection in older Hondas isn't the greatest.

Older Hondas excel in how fun they drive compared to other cars in their class. If that doesn't matter to you and all you care about is an appliance to get you to point A to point B, I would look at other options.

Some other cars to consider:

  • 2002+ Ford Focus. Very steep depreciation and domestic parts availability make them a good buy used. Avoid earlier model years as they had many recalls that were later worked out. Some models have side air bags and stability control. Has a timing belt, but non-interference design engine.

  • 2001+ Hyundai Elantra. The transition car for Hyundai while they were trying to improve their brand image. Very steep depreciation but still has decent reliability. Side air bags a plus. Has a timing belt and interference design engine though.

  • 1998+ Chevrolet Prizm. A Toyota Corolla in disguise. Same car, but the much higher depreciation thanks to the Chevrolet badge. Uses a timing chain instead of belt. Great deal used.

  • 1999+ Toyota Echo / 2004+ Scion xA (both share the same platform). The Echo gets great mileage (34 mpg city / 41 mpg highway) and is very reliable. It also has a timing chain. The Echo is pretty ugly though, very bare bones in terms of features, and its safety isn't the greatest. The Scion xA gets slightly less mileage (32/38) but has more utility owing to its hatch and has more standard features.

No matter which car you end up choosing, go for one with a manual transmission. They are cheaper both in initial cost and repair, get better fuel mileage, offer better driver control, and are arguably more fun to drive.

If the slaveowner was injured, but still alive, it turns the act of burning the body from covering up a crime to choosing to inflict a very painful and drawn out death. Unconscious and even comatose people can still feel pain.
