TROPHY CASE

IAm Justin Amash, a Republican congressman who opposes the Patriot Act, SOPA, CISPA, and the NDAA, AMA by justinamashin IAmA

What about passing legislation to allow corporations to stall union elections and intimidate workers? My parents have both been threatened with their jobs by management simply because they were FOR the union. If you don't help people in these situations, there won't be a labor movement....ever. I know that since you're a republican you probably don't want to stand up for labor, but they are people just fighting for a disenfranchised middle class.
You just said "I support people's right to join together to influence others." Does this mean that next time there's a piece of legislation that helps labor unions actually have their elections, you'll be there standing beside them?

aaaaand how many people showed up in the mid-terms? Not many sir. As a result, the change we were promised was thwarted by the Tea Partyers who, once again, prove to be much more organized than their opponents. Young people still don't vote in this country.

BECAUSE NONE of YOU FUCKING VOTE!!! I'm tired of hearing your complaints. I work in politics. Get out of your house, organize, sign petitions, and - most importantly - vote!

Seriously, I'm sick and tired of hearing this question. The only way we can change ANYTHING is by voting. Git your ass you the polling booth and/or help get your like-minded voters out to the polls, you're worthless.

Sen. Kay Hagan (NC) bows to corporate interests by introducing S. 1747, a bill to eliminate overtime pay for IT workers and pretty much anyone who touches a computer in their job. Let's call her out! by 1181in politics

[–]1181[S] 0 points1 point ago

The bill: The Computer Professionals Update Act, S. 1747 introduced by Sen. Kay Hagan (NC) Background: the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) is the law that require employers to at least pay the federal minimum wage and overtime pay equal to 1.5x their regular rate of pay. Some computer professionals are covered by this while others aren't. Basically, if you get a salary you are exempted from the law (obviously).

However, many computer professionals are paid hourly (IT help people, computer repairmen, etc). This bill would effectively eliminate their right to overtime pay. THIS. IS. BULLSHIT!

Make no mistake, the lobbyists are out in full front on this one. Leading the way is the TechServe Alliance, the lobbying group of many IT services companies and consulting firms. IBM is also lobbying their butt off. In many ways, they're leading the effort after settling allegations that they violated overtime pay protections and were forced to pay out $65 million in back-pay. Now IBM is trying to alter the FLSA so they never have to deal with it again.

This cannot stand. I've seen Reddit do wondrous things in the past. Let's beat this bill back to where it came: the fires of Corporate Mordor.

I work with some political organizations on the democratic side. If I hear organic, organically one more time by these lazy hipsters I'm gonna rip off their hemp necklaces, place them in their fedora, and shove it up their ass with a pair of Toms.

Sorry, I really don't have anything against them as people. They just resonate as ultra-cliche and are utterly useless when it comes to getting anything done in our movement. They seem to use "organic" as a noun or adjective in every other sentence. I've even heard it used as a verb. Not only does it piss me off, it wastes my time when these people just want to get their "two cents in" on conference calls or meetings when they should just shut up and take notes.

I hope the GOP keeps up the anti-contraceptive rhetoric. That'll be just about as popular as stating the gov't should ban bacon. by duckandcoverin politics

[–]1181 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but what we're referring to isn't the democrats or the republicans. It's liberals vs. conservatives. The parties switched but the nut bags remained.

Lincoln was a "republican" but he was a liberal. The South was democratic but conservative.
