Potential clients are not only interested in your work but in your opinions and views, also. a portfolio site with a blog gives them more incite into who you are as a person which can be beneficial.

Do it. If you're not good with the code part of things design you site and hire a web dev to make it work like you want it to.

I'm a cartographer. I've got a portfolio that I used Wordpress on and I've had it two years. I found a theme that looks professional, but it really doesn't show off my work how I would like it to. I haven't really found the right way to show off the detail of my work with large format views of my maps.

I am in the process of redesigning with a static webpage.

The one good thing about Wordpress is that it was fairly easy to make changes at any time.

Why would a portfolio/blog site be "dated, ugly, unsearchable, bulky, etc"?. If you customize the new default WordPress theme "Twenty Ten", it's anything but the words you used.

Don't: use apostrophes to denote plurality.
