Your record player is a Fisher MT-725, correct? It looks like you might have some options for the type of cartridge you want to throw into that. Phonopreamps says that you have a P-mount style cartridge which can be replaced with a Audio Technica AT3482P. I don't have experience with this record player (or many record players for that matter), but getting an Audio Technica cartridge should be pretty damn easy. Otherwise you can look for whatever stock cartridge Fisher used to use on that model (or any other P-mount style cartridges).

I used one of these $20.00 Audio Technica AT 92ECD cartridges on my first turntable. It sounded great honestly and it will work on both p-mount and 1/2" cartridge style tables (your's is p-mount, it just plugs in basically, no adapter)

being unfamiliar with record players, it turns out it still has a cartridge on it, but needs a needle. Would a new cartridge come with a needle, or would I need to buy one of those separately?

The cartridge I linked to comes with a new needle (stylus) so you're all set there. You could also just replace the stylus on your current cartridge but at $20.00 the one I linked to is so cheap it's probably just better to start over with the all new quality stuff for both parts.
