You might be thinking of Joel on Software. For example, here's an older story that includes information on the workaround they put in to stop SimCity from crashing on Windows.

That's the "brown-looking" blog I mentioned, though given just how much he posts, I suppose it's entirely possible that buried deep in his archives are the posts I remember.
