I agree it is back to where it started...however it seems that any character development that was made with House seems to be completely washed away.

The most fascinating part of the early seasons to me were the actual medical mysteries (which have been taking a backseat in importance for the past 4 seasons, so oh well) and then the interactions between House's team members with House and amongst themselves. Foreman, Chase, and Cameron had such a great dynamic always questioning things about each other, plotting against or with House, trying to outsmart him or prove something about themselves or the patient. That dynamic is what seems to have suffered the greatest and is what I miss most.

When they brought in Taub, Kutner, and 13, it wasn't quite the same, but it would still manage to be fairly interesting a decent amount of the time. The changing line-up that's been around the past few seasons, and especially this one, however, have just been a total bore-fest for me. This new attractive female doctor he hired from the prison? She's in every way a carbon copy of Cameron and 13. They're giving her the exact same storylines they've been giving the female leads for the past 7 seasons: House does his semi-flirt/semi-question thing with them and tries to tease out stories about how being so beautiful and successful must mean they're horribly damaged in some way, they spend all their time trying to prove that they're not just an impossibly hot woman who's also apparently a brilliant doctor, yada yada yada.

Charlene Yi's character would be better in that she's not in that same stereotype, but her acting is meh and I'm generally only interested in her in her brief moments of comic relief.

Chase and Taub are...whatever. Couldn't care less about Taub's kid drama or House's mockery of it.

The one thing that does work is the House-Foreman dynamic, and if they keep building on it then there'll be at least some redeeming things to watch. Overall, I won't be surprised if it's the last season. They've given some amazing shows over the years so it's not crazy that they're running outta ideas.

Well I don't think all of it has completely gone. House does seem to be more empathetic to others than before. For example in the last episode he seemed to be fairly sympathetic to the father. Show has definitely gone back to its roots though.

After the first episode this season they really had the chance to do something completely new, was was really looking forward to at least a couple of episodes in prison and House slowing figuring out what he actually wants to do next.

Yes, they replaced some characters, but it's really not that different.

Yep. There's also no subplot, the new characters are extremely bland, there are no interesting relationships around, there's absolutely nothing that can keep me interested in the show anymore. They really need to make some changes.

The jail episodes where the best in quite some time.

I'm liking this season much more than the last couple. I like watching House and Foreman going at each other more than House and Cuddy.

My favorite part of the season so far was when Wilson went to House's to watch the boxing match and there was House and Foreman sitting in the front row. One of the funniest moments I've seen on TV this year.

I agree, it was quite funny, but it turned into a massive plot hole. The House-Foreman dynamic in the last episode was right back to where it was pre-boxing match.

The absence of Cuddy alone makes it a better show. Throw in some Charlyne Yi and and it can't help but be a big improvement over the last couple of seasons. I still miss Kal Penn, but I think Yi is as good a replacement as could be found. I just hope they make more of her character than they ever did with Kutner.

For what it's worth, I like the actress who played Cuddy fine, but I had zero interest in House's romantic frustrations. Also, I still think it's about time to retire this show entirely. But it would be nice to go out on an upswing.

I really, really got bored with the last two seasons, and I was at the point of giving up if season 8 turned out shitty. Now, it's not shitty, its just...meh. I'm glad House is an asshole again, and I'm glad the asian girl is in the background now (I refuse to remember her name because I want her gone). The show is back to the old formula though, and it's disappointing.

Still, I won't dare miss an episode.

I agree, but there is one black mark on this season: Charlene Yi. She's a fine comedian and does mockumentary acting alright, but in a dramatic role, I find it painful.

I have to strongly disagree. I really love her in this role.

I like the role and what her character brings but I am not sure if I like her in that role. Some episodes I feel she is good others not so much.

I couldn't agree more. Last couple of seasons have been kind of a drag. In theory, I appreciated House-Cuddy romance, but I think it wasn't done too well.

This season House is back to being his old misanthropic self and has wittiness of earlier seasons. Addition of Odette Annable doesn't hurt either

Wow, lots of praise for the new season. I'm just plain bored. Though, to be fair, I have been for at least a season. I think I just finally gave up on it as the sheen has completely worn off. Still one of my favorite characters on tv though.

[–]rahba 1 point2 points ago

Yep. In my opinion the writers drifted into serialized drama territory because they felt the medical mystery of the week formula getting stale. The season 6 premiere with house in rehab was spectacularly done and had me really excited to see how the character was going to evolve. Of course like the prison stint, this was thrown away so that writers wouldn't have to worry about silly things like continuity.

Now we're back to where we all started with a few race/sex changes and the same basic character archetypes. I guess lots of people are happy to have that back but I'm definitely not one of them.

The flow of the show has been boring for several seasons now, with the exception of a few good episodes/moments.

The psych ward, the prison, the webcam to Antarctica, the CIA spy, amber, building collapse, ect...

But the routine is almost always the same.

Don't down vote me if you disagree, I'm just saying it hasn't really captivated me much in a few years..

[–]klti 1 point2 points ago

Well, it's called a procedural for a reason, and the procedure is strong in this one, basically its season finale and season pilot where the great stuff happens, in between there is rarely more than case of the week.

I just liked this most recent episode. I wouldn't say that it's the best season in a while. There was a lot of tension and suspense in the air for me when I found out that House could go back to jail and such. I miss Cuddy :(

If they really wanted to shake things up they should have kept House in that prison. I feel like what they've done is really a half-measure. I mean, he's already back in his office! Imagine a hilarious season full of 4 people doing diagnostics while crammed in a tiny room. Genius!

the Foreman dynamic could potentially be really good, mainly because he's got that jail card he can play at any moment BUT so far we've seen pretty much the same dynamic between the two that we've seen before (when he was previously his boss) and not even much of a variation on the House/Cuddy dynamic...

I do really like Charlene Yi's character, although again I think they are squandering the potential of her character and look like they are basically just moulding her into a just-another-assistant type that we have seen countless times before, both male and female - they are mostly pretty interchangeable...

the other one... I don't know... I thought for sure she would be gone by now - (the writing of) her character is so pathetically weak I immediately tune out when she appears - even her initial appearance in the prison I found completely improbable and so far she doesn't really seem to do very much, beyond look pretty...

Wilson - again there is great potential there but, again, I think the writing is pretty weak - he seemed to spend not a helluva lotta time pissed at House (and we have very little idea what he thinks of Foreman sitting in Cuddy's chair) before all was forgiven?

It is better. I like Charlyne Yi. She has a weird kind of chemistry with Hugh Laurie. Her character seems to share the same sense of mischief that House enjoys, which is nice, since everyone else is generally pretty uptight about it.

If this is truly the last season, it is a fitting send off to a great show

Maybe so, but the format needs an overhaul. Every episode - someone gets sick, it must be this, treat it. Nope. Must be this, treat it. Nope. Then aha - it's got to be this! Cured.

Repeat.

They sort of pushed that off to the side in previous seasons. I prefer when the show sticks with the medical procedural formula.

This season has been great, it's really bought life back into the show. The bit that REALLY stuck out for me as interesting was the latest episode when the guy asked house how his son looked, House didn't shoot back the expected, insensitive "Dead" but an unusual "Peaceful". This was great and really caught my attention.

[–]vowdy 0 points1 point ago

Noticed that aswell. But then I started thinking "this is House". He's probably acting compassioniately because he needs the fathers further cooperation :P

I have never really followed House, but have always liked when it came on. Has it been shitty for a while or something? What are the best seasons? Is it worth me getting into it?

Very worth it. Start from the beginning. Everything up to season 5 will blow your mind. 6 an 7 weren't that great, but only by the show's standards.

I'm really enjoying it, primarily because I couldn't stand Cuddy.

[–]commercial_hippie 0 points1 point ago*

Thank god they got rid of the soap opera

I wish they'd get rid of Wilson. He's annoying.

Except when House is picking on him.

[–]Iriestx -1 points0 points ago

This season is simply horrible. I'm on the brink of just giving up. They needed a serious change of scenery from PPTH. Why they ever left the prison is beyond me. House meets Oz could have been a gangbusters season.

Foreman as the hospital admin and milquetoast Charlyne Yi helping House do the same shit he's done for 8 years just isn't compelling.
