Congrats! Now you can do what REAL sysadmin's do - focus on getting out of systems administration.

[–]kurinsomeone stole my flair 19 points20 points ago

The day I took Windows off my resume, I threw myself a tiny party.

[–]1esproc 1 point2 points ago

I've never had Windows (professionally) on my resume :D

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Is that what I'm supposed to be doing? I've been playing WoW at work for the past 3 years.

[–]homeless_wonders[S] 3 points4 points ago

Lol, eventually I'll try and work my way to networking but this is a great start I've been dreaming of this day for about 8 years since I set up my first shitty server to automating it to fix and repair key files of the applications I ran. Thanks again

Have all of my upvotes, for I FOLLOW YOUR BELIEFS!

I just spit my coffee.

[–]joe2100 0 points1 point ago

This statement couldn't be more true.

[–]1esproc 1 point2 points ago

Wait, what? Sysadmin for 3 years here, I don't have to do this forever?!

[–]complich8Sr. Linux Sysadmin 1 point2 points ago

If you're good, eventually you'll get promoted to management, which you'll probably suck at but it'll pay better.

[–]FraggleDMT 0 points1 point ago

Where I work we call that failing upwards.

[–]UKDude20Architect 1 point2 points ago

Yup.. but until he does that he can be abused by me and my kind.. we love finding those sysadmins that really care and working them to death on spreadsheets and visio diagrams.. then dangling the title of "engineer" every so often ;)

[–]jwizIT Manager 0 points1 point ago

Where do they go then?

sysadmin is pretty fun, why would you want to leave?

Management is still mostly fun, but I could do with a bit more hands-on than I get nowadays.

[–]frackmesideways 22 points23 points ago

If you're the guy who replaced me after I left, it's not the dream job you thought it was, lol. J/K Congrats!!

[–]immrlizard 2 points3 points ago

That is what he will be saying next week...

[–]tapwater86Sysadmin 0 points1 point ago

That's what I'm saying as of this past Monday. Feels good man.

[–]linusHillyard 19 points20 points ago

Great kid. Don't get cocky. ;)

[–]undr5crl 2 points3 points ago

Don't get penisy kid!

Remember RAID isn't a backup medium! Congrats

[–]mcowgerVMware Guy 4 points5 points ago

...and neither are snapshots!

[–]wtmhThose who can't do... 2 points3 points ago

Netgear here. Turn shapshots off. Trust me. They'll never work.

[–]Hellman109 0 points1 point ago

Horsecrap! They fill LUNs very quickly and hurt performance!

[–]wtmhThose who can't do... 1 point2 points ago

I'll clarify. They'll work just fine provided you don't plan to try to replicate them anywhere.

[–]gimpbully 6 points7 points ago

whoa whoa whoa. RAID can certainly be a backup medium, just not a backup technology. VTL's are often on RAID media.

[–]Qurtys_Lyn 6 points7 points ago

RAID all the things! (Especially the soda machine...)

[–]electriccrowbarJrSysadmin 6 points7 points ago

Redundant array of inexpensive drinks?

Doing it right

[–]Qurtys_Lyn 2 points3 points ago

A drink in each hand? It is Friday after all.

[–]electriccrowbarJrSysadmin 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget the hot spare.

interpret that how ever you like...heh

[–]intelminer 0 points1 point ago

But hot soda is terrible!

[–]cipote214 10 points11 points ago

We don't, we have free run on the internet cause no one at work does anything stupid, /Yet/

sorry but this really bugs the shit out of me.

it's couldn't have, not couldn't of.

couldn't have, wouldn't have, shouldn't have. NOT of.

congrats on the promo bro

[–]veruusgood at computers 7 points8 points ago

Yep. Management likes it when we use English properly

[–]_SilentScream 11 points12 points ago

Now we just need to get them to use proper English.

My manager seems rather partial to the word "irregardless" in staff meetings and sends out emails that appear to be asking a question, but don't have a "?" at the end of the sentence.

Some days I wonder where I went wrong and how I ended up here.

[–]quietyoufoolJack of Most Trades 9 points10 points ago

I like question marks. They're action items.

Everything else you can just ignore.

Example:

My computer is broken!!!! <-- ignore

Can you please fix my computer? <-- action item

[–]jaywalkkerStandalone...so alone 1 point2 points ago

Unfortunately, everyone has the employee(s) who don't believe in action items...or subject lines. Just, Re: Re: cc: RE: Fwd: Re:
Even when I reply with an edited subject line to indicate a succinct problem/request summary, they still don't get the hint that we like keywords and organization.

[–]bribotThe website isn't down 0 points1 point ago

your flair made me chuckle.

[–]accountnumber3I don't know what I'm doing 0 points1 point ago

Can you do this for me.

[–]_SilentScream 0 points1 point ago

Exactly...

[–]mersaultcat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp -1 points0 points ago

I'm sick of all this hate for irregardless. Some asshole academic years ago got his knickers in a knot over irregardless and created a cult. It's a word. People don't freak out over unravel, and yet it's equally redundant. English is full of contradictory, self-negating, or redundant words. Get used to it, and get over this one bugaboo. Also, in spoken language irregardless often has a better emphasis placement than regardless.

[–]_SilentScream 1 point2 points ago

Nice try boss.

[–]mkosmoJack of All Trades 0 points1 point ago

[–]s3c10n8Network Admin 4 points5 points ago

If you wanna work third shift tech support, sure the sooner someone fills my position the sooner I get to move over

[–]sekh60 1 point2 points ago

Congratulations!

[–]betafish27 1 point2 points ago

Can you post the links to the suggestions you received? I'm hoping to move up like someday.

[–]enzoblue 1 point2 points ago

Congrats man. Now it is all your fault. Stock up on tums.

[–]1esproc 0 points1 point ago

This.

[–]fsckerdot1q 1 point2 points ago

"Dream job" I thought that once too. Congrats PFY.

[–]homeless_wonders[S] 0 points1 point ago

Lol, so I've heard I just like working with Linux, and at my job as Tech Support they won't let us for some reason now I get to use Linux at work, do server configurations and I'll be in charge of basic issues I'm super excited, or atleast I will be for awhile before I get another bump up to a better position rather than an entry level SA

[–]fsckerdot1q 0 points1 point ago

Now I'm about to sound like a crusty old bastard... If you really want to learn UNIX variants, dump Linux. Install one of the various BSDs, you can thank me later.

[–]The_Gopher 0 points1 point ago

Not really sure how learning Unix is going to help with being a Linux admin to be honest.

[–]fsckerdot1q 1 point2 points ago

[–]The_Gopher 0 points1 point ago

You had an opportunity to engage in a conversation and contribute something constructive, but instead you chose to just reply with a meme.

[–]fsckerdot1q 0 points1 point ago

Linux is a "Unix variant". All modern *nix OS's are classified this way. I'm not trying to be a dick. I've just never had the opportunity to do that. I had to take advantage.

[–]The_Gopher 0 points1 point ago

Until the OP just replied to your comment nothing had been mentioned in this topic about Unix variants. If anything I was confused by your comment.

Though you might not had been trying to come off as a dick you definitely did. Because tone doesn't carry well over the internet I want to clarify and say this is supposed to be tone neutral.

[–]obviousboyTotal Idiot 0 points1 point ago

fsckerdot1q = being the normal redditor

The_Gopher = being a dick

Lighten up dude, its the internet

[–]fsckerdot1q 0 points1 point ago

Hey look! There's my PFY now!! You gonna get me coffee on your way in dude? (bestwebproblems)

[–]The_Gopher 0 points1 point ago

O ok. Guess you're the one in charge around here. Better check in with you first in the future chief.

[–]fsckerdot1q 0 points1 point ago

I tried to apologize! stop making my brain hurt! FAAAAHHHHCK

[–]The_Gopher 0 points1 point ago

It's ok. We've kept things civil so we're all good! :)

[–]homeless_wonders[S] 1 point2 points ago

I use FreeBSD at home, as for an easier system that's good and unix based for work I'm more comfortable with Linux cause it's harder for me to mess it up since I've only ran in an unix environment for 8 years on and off or something like that. I've only really just gotten into it about 2 years ago by getting rid of windows entirely.

[–]j0ecanad1an 0 points1 point ago

Congratulations. Putting the hard work eventually works out.

[–]homeless_wonders[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I'm really happy about it, I've busted my ass since I started trying to get that job.

[–]Mr_Mars 1 point2 points ago

got the promotion to Sysadmin and I couldn't have done it without some of your suggestions

There's another suggestion for you, on the house.

Congrats. Don't get complacent now.
