The failures in game 6 were insurmountable. You can't blow chances like that against even a mediocre team (which the Cards aren't). I figured Game 7 would go about like it did, but I watched it anyway.

I think I might be done with baseball. If I want to feel miserable, I can look at pictures of starving people. At least then, my grief seems more legitimate. My baseball team being the runner-up to the championship seems like a really lame first world problem. I know it is a game. I didn't even play and had no bearing on the outcome. Why should I feel distress about the outcome?

I think I preferred it when we were eliminated in May. Then I could just watch baseball without caring about the outcome.

True, not a routine popup, but I'm a little bitter.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seemed makeable because he was playing so deep, but that ball was hammered and hit the top of the wall. If he's playing at normal depth, he turns around and waits for the carom off the wall. But, because he's so deep, he thinks he has a shot at a ball he had no realistic chance at catching.

[–]Arc_ 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think he had plenty of speed and ability to reach the ball, but when he reached the warning track he slowed down quite a bit because (assuming here) he thought the wall was coming sooner than it did. Definitely should have been caught in my opinion.

[–]saga915 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He was deep enough to catch the ball. Watch the replay, and you can see that he was just a foot to the left of it. I can't blame the man for worrying about how much it would have hurt to hit the wall hard, but if he had been focused only on the ball, the play would have been his.

[–]yellowfish04 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How much could it have hurt?

"Shit, it's coming to me.. okay, okay, I catch this and we win the WORLD SERIES for the first time in franchise history.. alright, I think I got thi-- ooh, wait, no that might sting, better let this be a 2-run double.."

[–]cr1swell 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You will notice that he never once looked back at the wall before judging the distance he had to go before catching the fly ball. Thus* he jumps early, and misses the routine flyball.

[–]dugmartsch 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't beat up Cruz too much for that play. That wasn't a popup or anything, it was a tailing line drive rope off the wall, one of the hardest plays an outfielder has to make. And Cruz was trying to chase it down with a groin(?) injury, to boot.

Not saying it was an impossible catch, but I think it's only a "should make" catch if it's a defensive replacement.

[–]iamj33bus 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That was not a routine fly ball. That would have been a leaping catch at the wall and would have been regarded as one of the best defensive plays of the decade in a championship game.

True, true. Are you a Cards fan? If so, what's the perception in St. Louis? Is Pujols going to be back? Is he going to be enemy #1 if he leaves, or forever loved for now two World Series title and a HoF career?

[–]jec68 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am a Cardinals fan but I do not live in St. Louis... If you look at their payroll, you can see that this team has taken great care and gotten very lucky to avoid bad contracts. Compare Holliday's deal to Crawford and Werth and Bay, for example. I guess you can say that Lohse and Westbrook have not worked out but those are not calamities. What needs to be understood is that Barry Bonds was the best player of all time and that without steroids, the human body just cannot put up an OPS of 1.4 in an age 39 season.

They have put themselves in a decent position to let Pujols walk. I love the man, but this team is about winning baseball games. This is a mid-market team and they absolutely cannot afford to hand out disaster contracts like Joe Mauer and Alex Rodriguez and Alfonso Soriano and even Mark Teixeira have received (the list really does go on and on - I mean even look at guys like Todd Helton and Ryan Howard and think about how these deals worked out/will work out. Look at the wreckage.). $100 MM+ deals rarely work out and it is surprising that 2 of the ones that have/will are on the same team - Pujols and Holliday...

If I had to make a gamble on it I'd say there is a 40% chance of him leaving... He has now won 2 WS here and I think he will be looking for as much money as possible - but again, I do not believe Mozeliak will hand out more than $190MM-$200MM. If he signs with the Cardinals, I'd say something like 6/$150MM is likely. But honestly, good for him if a team wants to spend more.

[–]YouTubeCommentsOnly 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the response. Regardless of what happens, Pujols is one of the best players of all time already. What he does from here on out is just gravy. As good as people know Pujols is, I still think he's underappreciated... he could be a top-10 player of all time when it's all said and done, and with the exception of the statistical freak that is Barry Bonds, the best player of the generation.

But, I wonder... what if Pujols signs with the Cubs? Would that tarnish his legacy in the eyes of a Cards fan?

[–]Colt_Cant_Dance 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cards fan here. As of the past two years, since the drama with the Reds and Phillips, I find it much easier to hate the Reds than the Cubs anymore. Cubs jokes are fun and all, but I definitely feel as if the Cubs-Cards rivalry is starting to fade out.

[–]freezingprocess 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is a "no-contest" these days. The 6th highest paid team in MLB sucks hard and have no WS wins to boast, yet talk shit on the most winning team in the NL?

I brush it off anymore. It is a joke.

[–]jec68 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I personally would be fine with him signing with the Cubs for what would be sure to be an above-market amount of money. One more awful contract for them.

Just have a look at how his WAR apears to be declining. This is a tough one for Mozeliak but based on how this team has fleeced Berkman and Wainwright and Pujols the first time, along with the solid management of the pocketbook, I am fairly confident he will not overpay.

[–]YouTubeCommentsOnly 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not surprising that Pujols' WAR is declining for two reasons. (1) He's now on the wrong side of 30 and that's an uphill battle for anyone not named Bonds or Clemens. (2) His level of performance was so freaking high, for any age, that it's simply hard to replicate year in and year out. He set the bar so high that even he is now having trouble reaching it. Obviously this year was a "down" year for Pujols, but last year (2010, to clarify) looks like a "down" year on paper as well, despite him leading the majors in OPS+ among many other categories.

I think that Pujols can be a 7 WAR player for a few more seasons, which puts him in the class or better than a good Miguel Cabrera, a good Adrian Gonzalez, or a breakout Ryan Braun. Jose Bautista and Matt Kemp are on a different level right now, but may come back down to earth. I think Pujols should still be treated like an elite, top-5 hitter going forward for the next few years. The risky part, of course, is years 4, 5, 6, 7, and beyond (?) as Pujols hits the wrong side of the 30s. I don't think Cubs fans would care about year 6, though, if Pujols could win them a World Series in year 3. And, you never know... there really haven't been players like Pujols before, so there's no telling that he can or will do into his mid- or late-30s. It wouldn't shock me to see him remain a beast for the better part of a decade. Just about nothing he does shocks me anymore. He's that good.

[–]freezingprocess 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it would be a betrayal if he signed to the Cubs...but we are used to it. There would be a lot of bitching and moaning, but not many would be furious. Especially if you consider that we got Pujols best years.

We love our players...Albert has been a boon since McGuire left. It felt almost seamless to lose one great hitter and pick up a rising star. However, if Al prices himself out to another team, we will still love the time he was here. I wish Mr. Pujols all the best.

Cardinals follower here, not much of a baseball fan anymore though. It's nice for the Cardinals and all but I can't help but feel bad for Texas. It's corny, but I really feel for that Cooper kid who lost his dad. Not that winning fixes anything, it's just sad as you know he's followed it closely, just like last year with his dad. [–]DeskFlyer 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The cocky Nyjer Morgan was the only one talking shit... the rest of us here Milwaukee (as I pointed out in past posts), never wrote off the Cardinals. Carpenter had the last word, for sure.

Anyway, good for you guys... you deserve it.... I hate to love your team, but I do anyway for some reason... you guys made this post season an epic one that will never be forgotten.

Get off Reddit and go celebrate already!

[–]eidetic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't remember it, at least not in terms of fans talking shit. I remember the media hyping some non existent hate between the two fanbases, mostly as a result of Nyjer's bullshit.

After we were out of the running, I kinda lost some of my excitement for the World Series, but I was still rooting for the Cardinals. I guess it was kind of a "well, I'd rather have been knocked out by the eventual champions", combined with the fact that I kinda like the Cards, and my general dislike, or rather indifference, towards teams from Texas (be it football or baseball). Finally, after seeing how the Packers went to and won the Superbowl last year, I can respect the Cards' run (and understand the excitement of the Cards fans).

Now I'm just looking forward to a nice rivalry with you guys next season. Hopefully it will be a good season for best teams (with the Brewers coming out on top of course! But that will be no easy task).

So congrats Cardinals fans, that was quite an epic run!

dont downvote just stating observation

I also found this disturbing

Jerry Lane will be the home plate umpire for game 7 Cardinals are a 8-1 2.04 ERA with him as home plate umpire Rangers are 1-6 4.30 ERA with him as home plate umpire

also why dont they show the pitch finder after every pitch anymore?

Annnnnnd..... it's fixed. Still hilarious that they had it wrong even for a short time.

Unfortunate... The rangers really looked like the better team for most of the series, and despite Pujols stupid crazy game3; that game was pretty much given to the cardinals by a massive momentum building bad call from a hometown ump at first base...resulting in 4 runs in the 4th inning.

Also, it was painful to watch both managers during this series... LaRussa is pretty much over the hill...senile...ADD. It seemed like he wasn't even watching the game half the time. Washington willfully ignores reasonable decision-making. There's something to be said for managers that bring a team together like these guys, but it's not fun to watch them lose games despite their player's best efforts.
