When A-Rod signed his $252 million dollar contract with Texas, he said he was going to get them to the World Series. (self.sports)

He kept his promise.

At least the Rangers got Andrus and Feliz for Tex. They are still paying part of Arod's salary.
[–]dallen 19 points20 points21 points 1 year ago
This was the last season for that. When Feliz caught Arod looking last night it completed Arod's final season on the Rangers payroll.
[–]The_Texican 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
It isn't really all that simple. What they were obligated to pay for with his original salary has been completed. There is the deferred payments, but he is just one of many creditors the Rangers had. So I guess in a sense that is correct, but not as a normal contract player. I mean they still owed Mickey Tettleton money, he has been long gone....
[–]NYCubsFan 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
And I believe the Mets will be paying Bobby Bonilla until 2035 because of deferments, which will total about $30 million. All to not pay him $5.9 million back in 2000.
[–]The_Texican 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
yea.... but that was still a win for the mets :P
Do you mean a win by their standards of player moves, or because fans didn't have to endure his downward spiral for another year? Either way it made me laugh.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Are they clones? They look exactly the same.
[–]raldi 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
They are still paying part of Arod's salary.
I thought they were freed from that when he opted out of his contract after the 2007 season.
[–]wryknow 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Which made me smile.
[–]Darko33 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Him too (fuck that bitch alert).
[–]wryknow 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Do you think Scott Boras is still rolling around in money after 2 of his clients utterly choked in the postseason?
[–]Darko33 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Well, he's still got Jayson Werth to fall back on.
[–]wryknow 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
I imagine Scott Boras' house has a big moneypit like Scrooge McDuck's.
[–]sonnuvabitch 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
He's the baseball anti-christ.
[–]Hatcher 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Rhynes? Didn't figure you to be a redditor...
[–]Knotwood 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I don't think Baseball Jesus is a Redditor.
[–]archtype 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Boy, reddit has been Ticket-friendly the last couple of days. That's a good thing.
[–]Darko33 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I haven't thought about McDuck's moneypit in years. Thanks for dredging up an awesome childhood memory.
[–]wryknow 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
There exists a torrent of all the episodes. I watch them with my son.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I'm gonna chime in with: Did you see that outfield assist Werth had to kill Cody Ross? Fucking sweet. My favorite play in baseball.
[–]Darko33 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Huge Phils fan who watches 100+ games a season; that's the part of his game I think I'm going to miss the most. He has an absolute cannon.
Indians fan here, same thing. I'm going to mis Shin-Soo Choo, absolute lasers from right. Also a Scott Boras client.
I'm beginning to think Boras was a Roberto Clemente fan, and hunts down good-hitting right fielders with huge arms, because they can make so much money.
[–]Darko33 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
No. 2 on the things about Werth I'll miss is his ability to wear pitchers down. Don't know how the numbers shook out this season, but last year he led the majors in pitches per plate appearance.
...didn't realize Choo had that same type of arm though. Guys like that are so much fun to watch.
So are we all just assuming that Boras is going to woosh these guys away from their teams for the yankees/highest bidder?
Yeah man, the dude was a pitcher, got Tommy John surgery, and I've seen him just nail guys at third, even kill bloop singles, throwing the guy out at first. Pretty much he's the man.
[–]eking85 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Where is Choo-Choo train going? I heard he might have to go back to serve in the army but thought that was rumors.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Nowhere yet, I heard he found a way around the whole military service thing. Don't ask how, but I heard it somewhere. Hopefully he stays with the Indians forever or until he's no longer the boss.
[–]zjneih2 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That's the reason as a Reds fan I'm willing to let Jay Bruce fight through his hitting inconsistencies
[–]ridgelawrence 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
Loved how he was the last one at bat at the top of the ninth.

What a tool
[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 1 year ago*
He had a .300 batting average, 50 home runs a season, and 400 RBIs in his 3 years on the Rangers. I don't know how much more one man could do to help get a team to the world series. The rest of the team are the ones who sucked.
[–]buakaw 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
Yeah, I don't get why Ranger's fans are so bitter. It's not like A-rod demanded to get traded. It was the Rangers who wanted to trade him because they couldn't afford to keep paying his ridiculous contract which by the way was their fault. No one forced them to overpay.
[–]pbtifo 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I don't get why Ranger's fans are so bitter
Because he's an asshole.
He was an asshole the second the rangers traded him and wasnt on the Rangers anymore. Johnny Damon, Matsui, and Giambi get applauded when they come back to Yankee stadium because people realize the contributions they made to the team.
[–]MightyMinneapolis 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago
It was very satisfying to watch him K looking, to end the game. But you know what sucks?
This guy, despite being an admitted/caught PED user, is STILL a millionaire (200x over) that has a ring with the Yanks already.
That fucker still wins.
[–]seeker135 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
Yeah, nobody knew he meant "by leaving the Rangers, I..."
[–]DirtyBinLV 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago*
I'm not at all a fan of A-Rod's, but that's what every athlete says to justify their gigantic contracts. The Rangers management were dumbasses for giving him that much money. A-Rod's 3 seasons in Texas were very good, with him batting .318, .300, and .298, winning gold gloves all 3 years and the MVP once. He's only had 2 seasons since that were in the same category. A-Rod's stats link
[–]Clsjajll 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Good stat research. If you look carefully in the photos, you can see the needle sticking out of his ass during those years, too!
[–]DirtyBinLV 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago*
That may be part of what makes A-Rod a jerk, but it's irrelevant to the point the OP is trying to make. The Rangers paid him to be one of the top players in the league, and it's almost impossible to argue that he wasn't.
[–]meltedlaundry 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago
A-Roid is a man of his word.
[–]tayto 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I recall plenty of Rangers fans claiming the same thing. At least they wised up a decade-plus later.
[–]Kerafyrm 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
This title would be much more effective if A-Rod didn't get a World Series ring last year...
[–]Tallon 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
What does that have to do with the Rangers?
[–]legalpotato 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
it means that the title is still clever, but if Rangers' fans want to use this to gloat over, they're a little premature. that being said, I'd still be pretty damn happy if I was a Rangers fan now. congrats.
[–]agent103 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
it was like watching the Death Star explode.
[–]Clsjajll 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The second time. After they could have fixed that whole hatch issue.
[–]shantm79 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Was it? They'll be back soon, don't get too excited douche
[–]agent103 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
douche. the essence of the yankee fan. whom tries to makes sense of a world which denies them the easy victories to which they feel entitled to. get over yourself. you'll be fine.
[–]shantm79 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
You're right... we will be fine. We'll win more and more WS while your franchise toils in anonymity. Yankees are bigger than baseball and your team needs them to survive.
Face it, you're just jealous.
nah, i don't care about your team or the business aspect. i was concerned about you
but.. the team who went bankrupt this year beat the team with the $210M payroll lol
ok great, awesome
Yankees have 27 titles. When your team gets to about 2, then lets talk.
[–]Tteokbokki 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
A-Rod didn't have Kate Hudson's juice on his bat this season.
[–]seeker135 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Or Madonna's, for that matter.
[–]lanismycousin 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Ouch, go Nolan Ryan ;)
[–]dorshorst 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That's why Texas is still paying for him.
[–]truthiness79 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
didnt they only get Alfonso Soriano from the A-Rod trade? neither of them helped the Rangers in any way. the trades that brought the Rangers to the WS are:the Carlos Lee trade that also brought Nelson Cruz, the Mark Teixeira trade that brought Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and Matt Harrison, the Eric Gagne trade that brought David Murphy, the Edison Volquez trade that brought Josh Hamilton, the Bengie Molina trade, and the most criticized trade of 2010, for Cliff Lee. also the Vladimir Guerrero signing, the fact that Kinsler is actually healthy this late in the season, and that Wilson, Lewis, and Hunter all put up 10+ wins in their first season as full-time starters. A LOT of things had to fall into place for the Rangers to be where they are now, but signing/trading A-Rod, and trading Soriano, didnt have anything to do with it. Jon Daniels did two of the dumbest trades ever (John Danks, Adrian Gonzalez) but he managed to work his way around it. over all, congrats to the Rangers.
and im a Mets fan if that makes a difference about my rant.
[–]Guy_Buttersnaps 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
More like the Yankee's pitching kept it for him.
[–]Dog_from_Duckhunt 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
You better win it all now. I can't stand either NL team.
[–]newBreed 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago

[–]CptMurphy 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago

[–]european_son 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
Tom Hicks?
[–]sammo62 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Gotta hate that man. Thank god he is out of Liverpool FC now.
It's nice when i see statements like this... Let's me know that someone has no clue what they are talking about, so you can summarily dismiss anything they have to say :P
[–]jayesanctus -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
Apples to oranges.
also *paid.
[–]Iago78 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Loved watching him strike out.
Love the fact that a bankrupt team destroyed the Yankees.
Awesome postseason so far. It'll get even better when SF beats the Phils tonight.
Don't worry, even if the Rangers win the WS this year, the Yankees will reload and come back stronger. The Rangers will go back to being irrelevant.
[–]Iago78 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Oh totally agree. But that's what's great about baseball. You never can tell when the stars might align for an unlikely team.
The fact that there are "likely" teams (like the Yanks, Phils, etc) makes the whole thing possible.
I hope they never have a salary cap. Salary cap ruined football.
Their should be a salary minimum. Teams should not pocket the money given to them through the luxury tax and revenue sharing.
[–]phukka 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Yea, the Yankees will just try to buy whatever team wins the WS and see if they can go back.
"Buy whatever team"? I've heard some dumb things from Ranger fans, but that tops them all.
[–]phukka 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Not a Rangers fan. I'm glad the Rangers won, though.
[–]executor67 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
ROFL? Yeah bro, because the yankees don't go out every year and try to buy the entire starting lineup of the allstar team. Yankee fans are the worst of any professional club in any sport.
Who did they buy for 2010? Marcus Thames? Nick Johnson? 2009 - AJ, CC and Tex. OK - I'll give you that 2008 - Morgan Ensberg, LaTroy Hawkins, Darrel Rasner? Not very exciting 2007 - Pettitte, Kei Igawa, Jeff Nelson
(Note: I did not mention players who were on the team the previous season)
So in the past 4 off seasons, only in one off season they made a huge splash in Free Agency. But consider this (it might be over your head, so I can go slower if you want), they were opening up a new stadium (so were their territorial rivals, the Mets) and needed to increase their draw... especially after missing the playoffs the previous year.
So please do some basic research before spouting off. You're probably not capable, so I understand.
They are the most successful team in the world for a reason... and you wish your team was too!
[–]shampstyle 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
oh please. if you have the money why not spend it? to the rich go the spoils. don't take out your frustration on the fact that your team probably sucks on yankee fans. nothing worse than a fan that hates another team's fans more than the actual team, pretty pathetic actually.
[–]zavoid -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
Keep dreaming on the phils losing tonight
[–]Iago78 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago

[–]rehdit[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago

Did I call that one, or what?? ha ha
[–]heapinsteamer 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Speaking of calling one, Right before uribe hit the go ahead homer my friends dad said, come on uribe, lets pop one. Next pitch was gone.
[–]hideisalive 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
He led the league in HR all three years he was there, he certainly tried.
[–]Anchorage42 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
When A-Rod signed his 252 million dollar contract, he should've said "I can probably donate a shit load of this for good causes to further American society, because, after all, I'm just playing baseball"
[–]Itakethefifth -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
Mission Accomplished!
[–]manofnothing -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago
For all the times he gave signals to the other team in hopes that they would do the same, this hopefully makes up for it. And I really wouldn't put it passed A-Rod if he did do something on purpose to help out the Rangers this series.
[–]CluckyB -22 points-21 points-20 points 1 year ago
Way to imply Texas only made it because the Yankees dropped the ball rather than Texas stepped up big time.
