How about you enable the down-arrow and let the readers decide what is relevant?

Right. The WHOLE FUCKING POINT OF REDDIT.

Seems like not only the "complaining about vuvuz" and the "asking for a ban of vuvus" is banned...but also the "making fun of vuvuz". It's not in the new tab.

I really thought it was worth submitting...let us at least have a laugh about this ridiculous topic.

"There's an Aphex Twin track that sounds exactly like this. But about 85 minutes shorter, because THAT'S AS MUCH AS A HUMAN CAN WITHSTAND"

In reddit-pro mode you can use the secret "hide" feature.

[–]Bristol CityEnderMB 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I remember correctly the reason it was removed was because users had abused it by downvoting stories about teams they disliked. We've got a similar problem with users ignoring Reddiquette by downvoting comments they do not agree with.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurcoolhandluke05 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because people dont know the point of downvotes. For instance when a certain match has a game thread, say Germany-Australia, there is no reason to downvote the thread, but people will because they dont like either of the two teams. Its better to simply sort out by posts in a smaller reddit like this by upvotes, rather than having posts get downvoted into oblivion because they dont support a certain team. In this sense ignoring the post works as a downvote but doesnt keep everything around 1 or 2 points.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because people dont know the point of downvotes.

I'm not buying this explanation. If you think fellow readers of r/soccer are such immature people why are you here?

This is not a small subreddit anymore. 5K is more than a critical mass.

Ignoring doesn't work as a downvote. I have to upvote everything else to have the same effect of downvoting a post that I really like to downvote.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurcoolhandluke05 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think 67% of Redditors know what they are doing, its that other 33% I worry about.

In all honesty I'll just reinforce my point that too many people want to downvote not because something doesnt add to the discussion, but simply because they root for another squad. Again there is no reason to ever downvote a game thread, its practically the point of this whole subreddit. But from what I understand the downvotes were taken away because people were abusing them and downvoting everything that didnt have to do with their specific team.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

too many people want to downvote not because something doesnt add to the discussion, but simply because they root for another squad

That is an assumption. I think we are rather civilized here. Furthermore, if people are downvoting based on team associations, why do we have team crests? Wouldn't it cause unfair comment downvoting? Well, it hasn't.

[–]pigferret 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I only just turned up for the Australia Germany game, and I'd just like to say how impressed I was with the banter and general attitude of everyone discussing the game on the thread.

I was pleased not to see downvoting (that I could see) or flaming or stupidity.

I just saw people enjoying the world game.

Even we Aussies who still managed to laugh.

[–]Manchester Uniteddanteferno 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

from what I recall, downvote arrows disappeared because everything that was not Manchester United related was being downvoted into oblivion.

[–]Arsenalthekrone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty sure it was the exact opposite, actually.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But for folks entitled enough it's easy to still downvote submissions.

And this:

downvote not because something doesnt add to the discussion, but simply because they root for another squad.

Is only true for comments, where downvotes are still available.

Downvoting is the better alternative than banning it completly. Always.

I'd downvoted every single last of those "how can we ban vuvus" threads i've seen the last day (it were not THAT many...I kinda overdosed on this subreddit over the weekend, so sadly I know for sure), not because I disagree, but because it's a repost of a repost of a repost.

Banning it outright is cheap and contradicts the intention of reddit as a democratic, community driven news and discussion website in my opinion.

Mods are for banning spam and illegal content, not for "keeping the frontpage clean". That is what a good community is for.

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This has nothing to do with upvotes and downvotes of topics please don't hijack the thread. Do you want more vuvuzela topics? That is the question. It's not, "do I have the right to post about the vuvuzela when I please?", "why is my opinion being crushed by fascist moderators?", "why does /soccer have no downvote buttons?"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you think my comment is hijacking the thread, click the down arrow next to it. 84 people have found it relevant so far.

[–]Tottenham Hotspurcoolhandluke05 -1 points0 points ago

Maybe it will help if we get an official answer to why downvotes have been disabled?

[–]Arsenalthekrone[M] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The official reason for removing the downvoting capability in the first place was because people decided to use it as a tool to express their loyalties to teams / players rather than reduce visibility of articles because they are off-topic or spam.

[–]UnnamedPlayer 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, it's not a good idea. I don't like a dozen posts complaining about the same thing either but then the same holds for all the crap which is posted on Reddit daily. If the users can handle that with downvote/hide options then why try to be heavy handed in a little subreddit like this?

[–]Scriptorius -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The rest of Reddit is extremely prone to fads that involve a chuckle or two and little discussion. It's still pretty democratic. If the mods want to keep /r/soccer pure they can do so. People who like it can stay and those who don't could start another subreddit.

[–]UnnamedPlayer 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And what would that accomplish besides further dividing the little community of people here who like football/soccer? Not to mention that that line of thinking doesn't exactly go over well with everyone. Sure, anyone who doesn't like that rule can go fuck off to whatever other subreddit he/she may want but that doesn't make this any less of a bad idea.

[–]Scriptorius 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Honestly, the best solution would be if mods could somehow just tag certain posts as being "cloggy", and people could optionally choose to have these posts be automatically hidden. Downvoting isn't enough because there's always people who will upvote as a gut reaction.

[–]UnnamedPlayer -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The best solution is already there - Hide the thread.

Back when reddit was filled with Glenn Beck/Sarah Palin threads, it got so obnoxious that I used to hide every single submission which as much as mentioned any of those names in the title. Even then I would have hated it if the mods started banning those ridiculous submissions.

The people who find the vuvuzela threads obnoxious can remove them from their sight, and subsequently from the page clutter, by just clicking on the hide button. I don't think that any interference from mods is needed here. If it was turning into a nationalist/racist insult fiesta then I could understand but it's just a regular reddit bitchfest and boy do we have them everywhere on Reddit.

[–]Scriptorius 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But if the mods are willing to take the time to ban posts, they wouldn't mind doing the same but in a system where you could opt into it. This also saves time for regular users, which is even more important in small communities.

A lot of people are subscribed to a lot of smaller subreddits, and it'd be annoying to have to go through each and hide the ones you don't want. On the other hand, most mods only manage a couple of reddits and this kind of stuff fits into their duties pretty well. Sure it might sound easy to just click hide a few times, but it would help if upon loading the page you immediately find a good post instead of first thinking, "Ugh, more stuff I have to hide."

Yes about fucking time. Different cultures have different ways to support their teams. This is the African world cup and this is how South Africa watches its football so get the fuck over yourselves. Why should we have the right to impose our way on others?

[–]MoaBird 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nonsense. I've watched every World Cup game thus far and that damn buzz still gets me every time. I've not heard one chant or song coming from the stands thanks to those buzzing hell-horns, and they've even managed to drown out the commentators on occasion.

[–]GordonBennett 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not entirely serious, maybe I just have a high vuvuzela threshold but after about half an hour of the first game I just kind of didn't hear it anymore. I genuinely don't really mind it.

[–]MoaBird 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem isn't the sound as such, it's that it keeps going and going throughout the entire game, with little variation. It's annoying and monotonous. If the spectators instead used them the same way people used cheers, jeers and songs (situationally, when a goal's scored, or to harass a certain opposing player who's about to take a penalty), I don't think anyone would mind. The monotony gets to a lot of people, though.

[–]GordonBennett 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah but there are subtle variations. It builds from a slightly quieter buuuzzzzzz to a louder buuUUZZZZZ to a BUUUZZZZZ. And then back down to a buzzzzzzzz. I think you just need to get your ear in, it takes a certain subtly of ear.

[–]Barcelonaclintisiceman -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm so sick of this argument. The problem isn't that they're distracting. It's that they drown out the audience and ruin the atmosphere of the game.

[–]GordonBennett 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the atmosphere looks awesome from the coverage I'm getting. Or is it a bit African for you? Bit noisy? Can't hear your favourite chants?

Video clips, interviews, zonamarking pages, and ongoing game discussions are what I would like to see. No one who actually cares about soccer wants to see more vuvuzela topics, which are just like the vuvuzelas themselves (super common, pointless, annoying, breed more vuvuzela topics...). Notice how those arguing against this topic ban don't defend the African instrument but their right to post, whatever the hell that means. There is no conspiracy against your nonexistent posting rights some people just want to talk about soccer and not plastic cones.

[–]Castlerock 1 point2 points ago
