I thought NZ had one of the smallest populations of the teams that are at the world cup but good on Slovenia for getting through with a pop. of 2million. Impressive.

Especially considering that they qualified from Europe

[–]PSV Eindhovenflobin 16 points17 points ago

And beat Russia, which has a population about 70 times as large.

I think China, India, and the US can go to show you that soccer proficiency has little to do with overall population.

True, but it does help.

It was by far our worst game in years, but one of the sweetest victories. Too nervous. Well done, boys !

Stupid amateur. Once this WC ends I want MAHIEDDINE Khalef as our new head coach, that'll bring DISCIPLINE into the team. DAMN IT!!!!

Good morning /r/soccer, just wanted to check in to let you know, yes, as a NJ redditor, I am awake and watching my 6th game of this WC :D

Nice! the games screen in NZ at 11.30pm 2am and 6.30am! Awkward watching times.

Half an hour in and I've yet to see anything that would give the US or England pause. I have a hard time imagining both of those teams don't move on to the next round (and hopefully I didn't just jinx it).

[–]distilledw 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, if the second half continues this way USA will have no trouble getting through.

At least thee rest of the group matches will fill the stadiums then? It hurts to see so many empty seats at this match.

[–]Manchester Unitedrmfhr116 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They'll fill up in the second round. I know I wouldn't pay to go see a team until I know they moved on to bigger things. It was like that during the last WC too, I remember going "but there are so many seeeeats?"

[–]Tottenham Hotspurcloud4197 0 points1 point ago

It's going to be a case of which of us can score the most against each of these teams to take 1st spot.

[–]Columbus Crewjotate 8 points9 points ago

Really wish they'd put some kind of color indicator on the screen so I can tell which team is which. Slovenia's flag is red, white, and blue. One team is in green/yellow and one is in white with a mostly green coat of arms on the chest. =/

[–]Eintracht Frankfurtshifty3 4 points5 points ago

Doesn't every country get the same picture? Here, there are color indicators next to the team's name in the upper left corner. Algeria is white and Slovenia green.

[–]brtw 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Same video feed yes, you can however overlay whatever you want over it. (Eating cheerios or I'd find pics).

[–]Eintracht Frankfurtshifty3 2 points3 points ago

Ah, alright, I thought the overlay was the same as well.

[–]Columbus Crewjotate 3 points4 points ago

[–]mvpujols777 -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, otherwise you'd have to listen to the announcer say which is which one of the sixty thousand times throughout the game, or perhaps look at the names which will be either eastern european or arabic, or look at which team's players look more like algerians or slovenians.

Sorry, don't mean to be harsh but come on.

[–]Eintracht Frankfurtshifty3 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, those long passes from Algeria always seem to end up somewhere outside the pitch. Funny thing is, the Algerians still give a thumbs-up gesture even if the pass was really sloppy, the Slovenians get mad at each other ;)

[–]Southend UnitedTimelines 1 point2 points ago

[–]Manchester UnitedSquareRoot 0 points1 point ago

A convenient excuse, really. Blame it on the ball.

The bounce had nothing to do with the keeper making a lackadaisical effort.

Hello, just got a bit more interesting.

EDIT: bad call. There is no reason for a yellow card there, not in controlling the game, not in the rules. One of the stupid trends in soccer right now is referees who send people off for handballs for no reason.

[–]Columbus Crewjotate 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think there's a pretty good reason they're being hard on blatant hand balls this year.

[–]mvpujols777 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The rules dictate that a handball shall not be cautioned unless it denies a scoring opportunity, is a persistent infraction, is used in an attempt to score, or halts the buildup of a play- just like any other foul.

A handball shall not be cautioned simply for being intentional as a handball is already inherently intentional.

[–]Liverpoolroobens 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Players should be punished for cheating. That is all.

[–]mvpujols777 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't disagree. This doesn't change the fact that it was hardly a bookable offense.

[–]Liverpoolroobens 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It was a goalscoring opportunity for Algeria if he hadn't handballed it. I don't see what the problem is?

[–]mvpujols777 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um, it was an attacking play by an Algerian attacker. If he hadn't handled it, it would have gone out of bounds.

[–]TheCoelacanth 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It shouldn't be cautioned for denying a scoring opportunity. That's an ejection.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good point. Maybe stupidity is now a bannable offence. :D

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

not in the rules.

I'll wait for urs meiers commentary to make my final call on this but I'm quite sure "intentional handball -> yellow card".

[–]Exeter Citybibs 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The BBC commentators are saying that an intentional handball is always a yellow card.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Was my first thought, too, but mvpujols777 made a good point above:

A handball shall not be cautioned simply for being intentional as a handball is already inherently intentional.

I'll wait for our expert from swiss.

[–]mvpujols777 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Despite those who misunderstand the rules, your skepticism is well founded. Handballs, according to the rules, MUST be intentional.

If they are intended to deceive the referee, they can be cautioned, but the one in this game wasn't any more mischievous than most, especially when the guy's already on a yellow.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can imagine that the refs are briefed to be hard on handballs since there were a bit trouble with them in some qualifying games.

My tip is: It can be given a yellow card and the ref thought "dude, wtf? GTFO!"

It's hard, but I think it was fair (i.e. covered by the rules).

Edit: Oh and I just see, the ref missed a penalty for slovenia, so overall the 0:1 is fine.

[–]mvpujols777 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

FIFA laws of the game:

Handling the ball Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with his hand or arm. The referee shall take the following into consideration: • The movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand) • The distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball) • Position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an infringement • Touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard etc.) counts as an infringement • Hitting the ball with a thrown object (a boot, shinguard etc.) counts as an infringement Disciplinary sanctions There are circumstances when a caution for unsporting behaviour is required when a player deliberately handles the ball, e.g. when a player: • deliberately and blatantly handles the ball to prevent an opponent gaining possession • attempts to score a goal by deliberately handling the ball A player is sent off, however, if he prevents a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball. This punishment arises not from the act of the player deliberately handling the ball but from the unacceptable and unfair intervention that prevented a goal being scored.

EDIT: I should have used the word "deliberate" instead of "intentional", but otherwise, I was dead on. The only reason to give someone a yellow for a handball would be to prevent an opponent gaining possession or attempting to score.
