Today is the Japanese holiday *Setsubun*. To celebrate, like people all over Japan, I put on an *Oni*, "Evil Spirit", mask and ran around the house being scary. The kids throw peanuts at me until I eventually run out of the house, victorious kids cheering.

I had this same thing here in California, except the Dad would wear a shirt over his head and underwear, and we would throw empty beer bottles at him until he stumbled out of the house. Then we would pick up the bottles and recycle, YAY!

What if the kids decide to pick up dad's Katana and give it a red hot go? What happens then?

We did this at work today with one out-going female staff member being the "oni." It was a lot of fun to see her run down the halls of a place of higher education. It was all fun until we heard about the news of a few guys being re-posted to different sections or "asked" to quit if they do not like their new positions. We all asked, "Did we not JUST drive the demon out?" Indeed a bonding experience.

Roasted soybeans are called Fukumame (fortune beans) and thrown either out the door or at a member of the family wearing an Oni mask, while the people say "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi (Demons out! Luck in!)"

We also ate Eho-Maki roll (lucky direction roll).

And they don't throw peanuts, but smaller beans that taste bad.
