My dog died a few months ago during a day of heavy storms in Melbourne, you may have seen the pictures of flash flooding. It was raining, just pounding down so hard, hailing all day, I was at work doing dishes. When it came time to knock off it was still hailing so hard I couldn't get out the door.

I ended up waiting it out at one of my dad's friend's cafe on the corner where I could see more of what was going on. It's down at a railway crossing, right up next to it so I could see down the tracks, I use the word 'see' fairly loosely because the leaves on all the trees that lined the tracks had pretty much blown off and were forming a wall of thick spray and tree matter. It looked like it was raining sideways, the wind was strong, the world felt like it was shaking.

After about two hours and a coffee the hail settled, it was still pissing down but the wind had stopped, three trams sat scared on the other side of the tracks, which had flooded to about knee height. I ran up the hill for the tram, trembling with the energy of the storm I'd seen, it was exhilarating.

I got in the door, completely soaked to the bone, my parents were panicking, well my mum was, she always panicks when stuff happens it's how she copes, the roof was leaking and the contents of a cupboard were damp. Dad was walking back and forth grabbing towels and piling them in. No one was paying attention to poor old Ruby, Ruby the pug who we had noticed had been growing a lump on her side over the last three weeks.

Three weeks and she went from being a perfectly sprightly and excitable pug to being an old, weary ten year old dog. Over the first week I thought it was just my mind playing tricks, the lump was tiny and I thought maybe she's just getting old. The next fortnight it grew, and grew, it consumed her. She couldn't sleep on the side of her it was on. The vets said that any operation we could do on it would be invasive, it wouldn't be worth it she'd have an open wound covered by a gauze mesh for a while, that the therapy would be very expensive and would only prolong her life.

We'd been discussing the night before whether or not we should get her put down while my dad was still at work. Neither of us used the word, even when I thought it I'd look in her eyes and feel my stomach drop like a stone from my chest. We thought we'd see how she did that night.

So, when the rain started at work that afternoon I thought nothing of it, it distracted me, so when I got home, sat down at the computer while my parents still panicked packing towels into cupboards over a few drops of water I thought nothing of my dog standing there, staring at me, tail between her legs.

I looked at her, something about the way her eyes didn't glisten, I don't know, I knew something was wrong. I called out to my mum, told her something was up. The wind picked up again, it shook walls and rattled the doors. She was struggling to breathe, it was subtle, the way a pug breathes is no beautiful thing but between each breath I could feel the labour of it, the real conceited effort to pull each lungful.

This is fucked, I thought, I told mum that we had to get our dog to the vet, our ruby, our little rubykins. She was suffering. Dad walks in to see us sitting down with her, her tail wags feebly as I'm patting her. I pick her up, real gently like I always do, one hand under her chest, I hold her underarm and wait for her to pull her hind legs up to be cradled by my off arm. She doesn't lift her legs. I don't think she had the strength, I had to get her to the car so I cradled her underside with my off arm as I walked down the corridor.

Her breath catches. It catches again. It's been weeks coming, I've been thinking about this exact moment over the last few weeks, hell, ever since I've had animals this is the thought that has plagued me the most during sleepless nights. You'll never know, you will absolutely never know the time or circumstances of something's death, you only know it's coming, or if you find yourself in my position, you'll know it is immediate, staring you square in the face.

Her breath caught for the third time, I put her down softly on her feet, I was so gentle with that dog, I'll have you know I always was, she was so kind, so soft, so floppy. I put her down and her breath kept catching, she couldn't break one breath. I called out "It's happening!" My mum's pace quickened, she ran out to the car, dad was somewhere doing something, I had tunnel vision.

I watched Ruby collapse, still convulsing, I pick her up like a bundle and run to the car, dad comes out of a side room, he gives me a towel which I wrap her up in as I'm running. I don't know why he gave me the towel, the rain had stopped, the wind blew hard, leaves danced across the slick road. Mum was hooking up the battery, I hopped in the car with Ruby on my lap, she was still convulsing, about once every three seconds. Four seconds.

We pulled out with dad in the back seat, he was reassuring my mum, I didn't look up from little Ruby's face sticking out of that little bundle. She made one last attempt for breath as we rounded the corner at the end of our street, she looked like she was yawning, her eyes were closed. She lay there, so peacefully the entire ride there.

The vet was about a five minute's drive, about half way there at a stoplight mum asked me how she was, I said "It's over, I think she's gone." It hadn't really sunk into any of us, I felt dad's hand on my shoulder, I turned around to see him, bleary eyed, he told me that this is how thing's are. We pulled up at the vet and I handed the little bundle to my dad. He didn't rush to the door, I understood.

The vets snatched her from us immediately, a vet came back out of the room they'd rushed her to and asked if we wanted her resuscitated, both my parents looked to me. I had tears streaming down my face, now the vet was looking at me, too. To this day I have no idea why they left it to me, I said no, that she had been in sufferance and there's nothing we could do. She nodded and ran back to the little back room. I gave my mum a hug and walked back to the car.

I walked back out the automatic door and found it was completely still. I wasn't wearing shoes, the ground was freezing underfoot but the air was welcoming. The sun was partially filtered by clouds, blades of sunlight were flitting through, the black clouds had passed.

I went out to the car, got in the back seat and I cried, I really, really did cry. The sadness had been building up over the week but it had really happened, ripples before a tidal wave of grief. But soon the grief passed, the sun kept shining right up till sunset. Our other pug, Puglsey, he slept in my bed that night and was very grateful for the privilege.

That's just the little story of the storm that took my dog away, point is that the storm passed and about a month later the fond memories began to outshine the loss of it all. Even Pugsley sniffs her leash every night before bed, but his tail is still high in the air, despite being a year older than her.

I have a black labrador and you story is, apart from the weather, very similar. His name is Samson and he was becoming more and more sluggish and sore all over. His belly was swelling but we just thought that he was getting fat. One morning however, I woke up and looked down at him and I just knew that he was in big trouble. I carried him to the car and and rushed to the vet. Once I got there, the operated immediately. My parents arrived within 20 minutes. The vets removed a cancerous tumor attached to his spleen. Despite a low survival rate, he survived and has made a full recovery. The 2 hours we thought we had lost him were so bad, I just remember that horrible feeling of helplessness. Your story reminded me how much dogs become part of your family.

Well said, FUCK CANCER! I lost a beloved dog (and countless relatives) to that bitch (I was like 19 Lady was around 13 or 14). It always hard to lose a pet, any pet (I also lost a rabbit to a convulsive death). I haven't been able to even have the desire to want another pet for fear of the pain when you lose them. I'm very sorry for your loss.

I lost my Doberman to lung cancer. It was the most brutal thing to see her suffering to breath at the end. She ended up crawling up onto her favorite couch in the house, and died there. It was extremely emotional for me as she guarded the hell out of me when I was a baby, and when I grew up. She wouldn't let ANYONE near me without my parents, or unless I seemed ok with it. She was extremely loving, and unfortunately through an accident, she bit me (it was my fault, I fell on her back and suprised her).. so I'll always have a memory of her, and I couldn't be happier.

So, I agree full heartedly. Fuck cancer.

Dude it wasn't the heat that killed your dog. I have a golden retriever that is 11 and has spent all of those summers in Arizona outside. In 110 degree heat for 2 or 3 months out of the year. I'm sorry though.

[–]mckatze 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Arizona has pretty dry heat if I remember. A lot of other places have thick, muggy, suffocating heat that takes any existig breathing problems and just makes them so bad.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

dry heat is the prevailing majority but we still sometimes get a concoction of 100 plus with humidity more often than people think. If a dog has shade and plenty of water heat should not kill them, and if your dog is having problems with the heat/humidity bring it inside for pete's sake

We're in the middle of the heat wave in DC too, and yesterday I was driving through a neighborhood and saw a pup in the car with only the windows opened a crack. I'm so worried about that dog, I can't stop thinking about it. Please don't leave your dog in the car when it's hot. If it's 70F outside, and sunny, the inside of your car can get up to 90F, EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN.

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can call animal control or the police if you see a dog in a car on a hot day, just so you know.

[–]GeneralissimoFranco 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My mom left the dogs in the car with the AC running on a hot day while she went in the store. However, she was driving a Prius so you couldn't really tell the car was running. When she left the store an angry old man was calling the police on her and he refused to believe her when she said the car was running. It wasn't until he was allowed to sit in the car (while the dogs tried to bite him) that he would put the damned phone down.

TL;DR: The Toyota Prius is the ninja of automobiles.

[–]edstatue 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A tip to pet owners-- don't leave your pets outside in this heat, let alone in automobiles. Unless they have access to a pond or something, even animals can die of heat exhaustion.

I had to put my dog down this week. I've been destroyed. He was my best friend for 9 years. Cancer and arthritis got him. He looked so pitiful there at the vet. I knew he was ready, and I had to take the pain away. But it was terrible. I stared into his eyes as he went and saw understanding, fear, and love (the undying love was always there). I hope he saw my sorrow, and pain and love. I can still hear his last quickening breath as he went away. And I can still feel the emptiness I felt as soon as he did. He was a part of me. I can't believe I'll never see him again. Never hear the flapping of his tail on the floor when he knew I had walked in a room. Never hear his bark when he hears me at the door. Never throw another ball for him. I'll miss him forever. I'll love him forever. He was one of the greatest people I've ever met. Goodbye my sweet boy.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog, I would be crushed if the same happened to me.

It's just strange for me to imagine 95 degree heat killing anything. I understand this is probably somewhere in the world where that kind of heat doesn't happen often, but here it's reached 100 every day of the summer for as long as I can remember. Everything you do outside, you do it in the heat, and you sweat no matter what. It's never killed my pets, only cars have.

[–]MilTech_Help 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can agree with you on the temperature thing, but if he is anywhere on the east coast (northern more than southern) then the humidity up here is hotter than SHIT! omg it sucks so even if its 95 degree weather doesnt mean the heat index isnt at 115 because humidity is 100%. I live in maryland and it was 106 yesterday and the humidity makes you sweat the minute you get near a door.

[–]LeonGrey 0 points1 point ago

Sorry to hear about your dog. I know it's like losing a member of the family. It's probably pretty difficult to do at this stage, but I'm sure it'd help to focus on the positive that your dog more than likely lived a very long and happy life. Best wishes.

My dog spends just a few minutes in the heat and she's panting pretty heavily. Hopefully pet owners see this and realize that this heat is very difficult on our pets too!

[–]maxxspeed[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. I do have AC, but the dogs have to go out sometime. She went out, she didn't come back in. I was out today earlier at work and the heat was just totally oppressive. 10 minutes outside, I came back in and my pants felt like they just came out of the dryer, on high.

[–]taoism 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Irresponsible pet ownership makes me sad. I'm not talking about you OP, but I see people who chain up their pets outside with nowhere to go. That's a death sentence in Texas. You should never leave your pets outside (or if you do at least provide them with an area where they get plenty of water and shade).

My dog is struggling with health problems too but I keep a close eye on her because it's been getting hot. Haven't had any problems. She still goes outside when she wants to but I know better than to leave her outside for too long and I always go with her for fear of something bad happening to her. She's currently wagging her tail and enjoying the AC with me.

Do you think your dog would have lived if you had gone outside with her instead of letting her just roam wherever? No matter, 12 years is a long time for a pet dog. Sorry for your loss!

[–]cabochon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We banned our neighbors friendship, the asshole, for irresponsible ownership. Left his new dog tied to a tree. Put a sauce pan of water out every morning. If the dog tipped it, or the chain tipped it, he had no water all day. On a 95 degree day the dog was barking as I watered my garden. I finally paid attention and realized he was begging for water. I carried 3 containers over to him and he practically choked he was drinking so fast. We let the neighbor have it. This was just the straw that broke the camels back that summer. He'd been mercilessly neglecting the animal for 6 weeks. The dog looked like he'd lost 20 pounds since he showed up. We called authorities. Thankfully after that he gave the dog to someone.

Pet owners: make sure the water bowl is heavy enough that it doesn't tip over!

[–]RugerRedhawk 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My dog stays out year round, but has access to our entire property (just 1 acre) with an invisible fence, so he can get plenty of reprieve from the sun by sitting under the porch or wherever is coolest. Also, I'm in NY, not Texas, so that probably makes a big difference.

[–]Drache 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah. Here it gets to maybe 95 max in the heat of the day, so it's not quite as bad. But like you said, the dogs have to go outside sometime for a bit. I just do my best to leave plenty of water out and minimize the time they spend outside - sounds like you did everything you could too. I think posting a reminder to Reddit of how dangerous the heat is an awesome way to honor your dog's memory and potentially save a few (human or otherwise) lives.

That really sucks. You probably feel like you should have brought her in, and let her stay in air-conditioning, and all that, and really hind sight is blah, blah, blah - I have been where you are though, and I'm sorry for your loss.

I had a kitten die in my lap 4th of July morning from Flat-chested Kitten syndrome - I'd never heard of it before. I guess he got taunted to death by the other kittens that had big boobs.

BAWWW, my dog is dying right now. He keeps having seizures... :'(

[–]moonskye 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Take him to the vet, seizures are manageable with medication.

[–]ladditude 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We have meds for him, but the vet thinks it is a brain tumor, in which case we will probably put him to sleep.

Where do you live? Where I'm at we have 4 seasons, but our winters are worse than our summers.

Damn. My dogs (my fathers really, i'm just visiting) are gasping for air too. Think I might run the brush trough them one more time, just to kind of air them out and get some hair out.

Maybe take them swimming, yea?

111 today in Phoenix. not a big deal. However, 100+ in the midwest and east is a big deal. It's exceptional heat, the humidity is high, and caution should be taken. In 1995, Chicago had a string of 100 degrees topping off at 106, the heat index that day exceed 130. 500 people died. The dewpoint (a real measure of moisture content in air was over 83 degrees, in the agricultural areas outside Chicago (where I lived) the dewpoint measured nearly 90! Dewpoints over 80 are somewhat unusual even in Florida, over 90 is very rare. It was the most miserable, stressful weather I've ever experienced.

Take care of yourselves as well as your pets. I'm sorry to hear about your dog.

Come live in Louisiana. The heat index is regularly 100+ degrees with 100% humidity during the summer time.

I've been to NO twice. The second time I took a butter knife to cut the air with. I know. I live in the mountains of Virginia. It's never like this here for long.

I wonder why the hell anyone would have moved there before the invention of the air conditioner. I wonder the same about san antonio and all these other hot southern places.

Let me say I'm sorry your dog died. Not sorry for your loss, I'm sorry for the dog. If your dog (never mind a healthy one) had issues, why was it exposed to the elements to begin with ?

YOU SHOULD HAVE NEVER LEFT YOUR DOG TO SUFFER AND DIE A VERY PAINFUL AND PROLONGED DEATH IN THE HEAT. I SINCERELY HOPE THAT ONE DAY WHEN YOU ARE OLD AND SICK, THAT YOU FIND YOURSELF IN A SITUATION FOR THE "HEAT TO FINISH YOU OFF".

I know that's harsh, and I have lots of downvotes to look forward to, ... this is a hot button issue for me.

Way to pay back the 12 years of unconditional love from your dog....

okay so not sure if you know this but dogs don't have the sense to stop when they should, they can run THEMSELVES to death, the heat may have played a factor but to say such harsh words you are a fucking douchbag. PERIOD!

and have a wonderful day! hope you get in a car accident.........

How does it kill dogs, are they left in it for long periods of time or not given any water?

[–]InfinitelyThirsting 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a dog has any underlying health problems, it can cause death to come out of nowhere. Humid heat, for example, can greatly exacerbate a breathing problem one would hardly notice otherwise.

OK I will answer one of you assholes. You're the lucky one. I was at work. We do have AC at home. Dogs have to piss and shit occasionally. My daughter let her out and she didn't come back in. I don't blame my daughter, the dog had some health problems and fucking died in a very short time. Thanks for your concern.
