If I could bring back Firefly and Farscape (at the quality of season 2-3), I'd be happy even if there was no other Sci-Fi on TV.

What makes Ff good?

L.E.: no, really, I haven't seen Ff, but there's a lot of hype surrounding it.

[–]neuromonkey 26 points27 points ago*

It was charming and funny, having Joss Whedon's best dialog ever, it had great characters, played by actors who really got into their roles without overdoing it and had great chemistry together, the stories were (mostly) engaging and fun, there was a good through-line (plot bits that span episodes,) decent production values, the characters actually develop some over the course of the short run, it was very well directed and the art direction is good... It's just plain fun. If you like SF at all, Firefly is a must-see. It manages to go from silly & irreverent to tense seriousness without feeling (too) contrived or mawkish. It is unique, I believe, in the realm of SF television in its sweetness & realness in the face of being set in a completely outlandish environment. The ship's captain, played by Nathan Fillion, is the lovable rogue. This casting decision was impeccable. The guy is actually quite endearing, but doesn't rest on his laurels. He plays the flaws and imperfections well too, and when it comes time to be a badass, he does that. (At one memorable scene, he kicks a bad guy into an engine intake. He can do violence, he can be a jerk, all while maintaining his role as a capable protagonist. He's no Captain Kirk.)

The first time I caught part of an episode, I said, "Cowboys in space? What? Blech," and I left it there for a few years. Big mistake. Although the superficial trappings are of a "Western-style" frontier, you quickly realize that those elements serve as a kind of physical metaphor, and they fade into the background.

I feel that Firefly is one of the rare instances where the hype is actually proportional to the awesomeness of the show. Some folks don't like it, and that's fine. I can understand not being able to get past the SFish devices. But if you can, you kind of fall in love with it. It's the only TV show cancellation that I actually feel strongly about. If I was Bill Gates rich, I'd throw as much money as it took to get everyone back together to continue that show.

"Magnum P.I." Tom Selleck's moustache alone could have carried that show. And the theme song was awesome!

I think of it as the spiritual predecessor to Lost: it takes place on an island apparently run by Higgins, who is hiding the secret of the true identity of the mysterious "Robin" who actually owns island. Though tantalizing clues are dropped in every episode, the full reality of Robin's identity, goals and purpose is never revealed.

Is Higgins only pretending not to know who Robin is? Is Magnum himself actually Robin, and does Higgins know this or not? Are Zeus and Apollo, with their names referencing the Greek gods, more than they appear? Some sort of security system for the island?

The similarities don't end there. Both shows have a cool helicopter pilot and lots of people running around the island with guns. In various episodes it appears that Magnum--like Sawyer--may not be who he claims; varying birth dates and biographies are referenced in various episodes and flashbacks. Various people on the island side for or against Magnum, and some of them even want to see him dead. Why is he such a central figure? Is it destiny? Fate? Chance?

The series was unfortunately canceled before the entire story could be revealed. Even a just a single season arc explaining the mysteries would be the most compelling television ever!\

Farscape, of course.

I'm seeing a lot of votes for Firefly. Well, after seeing Buffy and Angel and Serenity, I've seen literally every trick in Joss Whedon's book. More specifically, I've seen how often he uses the same devices and character types. Answer: all the damn time.

Farscape all the way.

[–]crazytiredguy 8 points9 points ago

You'd have to bring back Dargo as well, but Farscape for sure!

[–]otakucode 6 points7 points ago

Unquestionably my most earnest desire, and my very first thought upon considering the question. Farscape was marvelous and had millions of stories left in it.

[–]Naonadhe 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Definitely agree. I've seen all four seasons, the miniseries, and read some of the comics penned by Rockne S. O'Bannon. One of the best television shows in existence.

[–]opticon 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whedon is highly overrated. Farscape was my favorite "canceled before its time" scifi series. They did so much often with so little, and when called for they could pull out all the stops and deliver big. The scene on the command carrier at the end of season 3... epic.

[–]ky420 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Easily my favorite show of all time. If sci-fi or syfy or whatever they call it now would get their head outta their ass and actually bring it back I would be overjoyed. I have hated them ever since they canceled that show.

I just started watching Farscape and I'm currently on episode 9 or so, season 1. I think it's boring to tell the truth. Does it get better later on? The only reason I continue to watch it is because of the hot blue chick. I never thought I would be so attracted to a bald woman...

I was in the same boat, wondering if I should bother. I am sticking it out. Season 2 doesnt get much better right away, but in the middle it does, starting with a trilogy episode. The interplay between Chrichton and Scorpius is worth watching. Scorpius is a great bad guy, the acting is stellar: his 'soliliques' are awesome.

It didn't get a lot of love, but I was seriously liking Kings. I would have liked to watch that play out.

Edit: Maybe it got more love than I thought, it has a nice 8.4 rating on IMDB.

[–]RobbStark 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem with Kings is that nobody watched it. Like so many other shows, it was marketed horribly -- I stumbled across it accidentally and didn't even realize it was the same show that was being promoted at every turn.

[–]FlyingBishop 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The idiots at NBC marketed it as a procedural drama, when in fact it was a Biblical commentary. From the commercial on BSG I thought it was a fucking crime show (and when I picked it up on Hulu 10 weeks into its run, my dad thought so too when I mentioned I was watching it.)

If they had marketed to Christians it would have done great. Dumbasses.

Awesome series, one of the biggest influences on my taste in SF. Heavily influenced by 2001 (esp. in the first season), this series was a huge influence on the look and feel of SF and was really the only hard SF around at that time.

[–]rbrumble 2 points3 points ago

I think so too. I read a review a long time ago on Space 1999 and the reviewer was ripping on Landau and Bain comparing them to the puppets used in other Gerry Anderson productions, and I was thinking that he completely missed the point. The intellectually driven, emotionally restrained Commander and Doctor were an homage to the astronaut of the future as envisioned by Kubrick in 2001. Dave Bowman and Frank Poole behaved the same, and that reviewer completely missed it.

It is bloody amazing. The problem is the show had a six season story arc, and got canceled after two. So yeah, great story telling, great characters, great mythology, will have you screaming at the end of season two because that is where it ended and did not have a movie wrap up loose ends.

Not anything concrete from what I know. I think there were some interviews and fan theories all about. I heard something about each act being separated by 5 years, obviously culminating with the nuclear blast alluded to in the show. I am currently trying to track down the supporting documents, though I think it was mainly explained to me through a friend who may have scoured the forum discussion boards for the original sources.

They've tried that several times; its just not a good idea. As much as I loved that show (and still watch it today) it doesn't seem to translate well into modern times. Out of the dozen or so MST3K I've seen, maybe 1 was decent enough that I wouldn't have minded watching the movie by itself, and then another few had amusing enough commentary that the experience as a whole was enjoyable. The other 75% or so were absolutely horrible movies with completely underwhelming commentary.

I realize the movies are supposed to be bad, but the commentary is also supposed to be funny enough that this isn't a problem, and for me it usually just isn't.

We all know the obvious choice here would be Firefly.

If I could bring back one TV series it would be ST: Enterprise. The series doesn't have the best reputation, but in my opinion season 4 was excellent. I would love to pretend These are the Voyages never happened (or at least hasn't happened yet) and the remainder of the six(?) years be filled in before the events of that episode.

I think it would be great to see the beginning of the Coalition of Planets and the Federation.

[–]cr0ft 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I came here to say Enterprise, too. In my fantasy world the fan-rape that was the final couple of "episodes" would go away and we'd see that series keep going - with a very much living chief engineer and the first ever human-vulcan baby eventually following, plus as you say seeing the political situation begin to shape into what is reality later on in the other ST series.

[–]dundreggen 4 points5 points ago

Season 4 was excellent because they brought in Manny Coto to produce, and he actually started making Star Trek again, instead of Berman/Braga drek. Then it started to suck again because he started getting frozen out (not sure by who - I think it was that Voyager ended and Braga didn't have anything else to do, so he came back to shit all over Enterprise again)

Big upvote for The Outer Limits. It really is the kind of show that could just keep going forever. No established cast/characters, and the OL universe is completely open and undefined.

I loved how there was so much variety in the stories and you never knew how they were going to end. There were some great ones, like the one where the global birth & infant survival rate dropped to almost nothing due to some disease and in the end you find out there's a whole colony of people, immune, living in the woods free from all the problems in society - it left you with a feeling of hope for the future.

And the one with Wil Wheaton where their ship was on a last-chance mission to destroy the home planet of the aliens Earth was at war with. The aliens get on board and are trying to sabotage the mission and Wil fights them off/survives to activate the planet-killer weapon they have when they get into range. And then, when it's too late, he realizes that the ship had turned around due to damage and he had just blown up the Earth. It was one of those shocking 'holy shit I can't believe that' moments. Plus seeing the horrific realization of what just happened. Wow.

Yeah, the show really had some great moments.

SG-1 was the perfect setup. A writer could not ASK for a more perfect situation. Step into a room, dial an address, boom, whatever environemnt or story setup you need, delivered. Very few shows have that kind of possibility available to them. They should have rode out the casting changes. People bitches like little girls when Craig Kilborn left the Daily Show too, but I hear Jon Stewart is working out after all.

No one can really replace RDA, but I still really enjoyed SG1.

I think they forgot that what made Stargate interesting. In a show called Universe, they took a franchise spanning all of human evolution/history multiple alien civilizations, multiple galaxies and fate of humanity/galaxy battles and shrunk the scope to a bunch of whiney scientists in a single ship which they can't control and don't know the purpose of.

I love that show as well, but be careful what you wish for. Season Six was supposed to start with Sam leaping to a space station in the future, and Al (now still married to Beth) would then leap as well to meet up with Sam since PQL couldn't track him properly anymore (or something, it's been a while since I read it). It would have changed the show completely, and likely not for the better.

Edit: Link to the alternate script

If I remember right, didn't QL have such a great series ending that adding to it anymore would ruin it?

[–]The_Bear_Jew 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've always wanted to see that series redone. But add some more complex story elements. Like have the "Leaper" cause time disruptions (kill Hitler, NOT assassinate J.F. Kennedy etc.) that would arc over multiple episodes and try and fix them. I have also speculated on having another "Leaper" that at first is thought to be evil. Then he/she eventually reveals to the protagonist that in fact they are computer programs made my a corporation in the future to manipulate time to its advantage, and that Ziggy is his "handler" and the thought to be evil Leaper is in fact a renegade trying to thwart the corporation. End it with a grand 3rd season finally of them CHANGING THE BEGINNING OF THE HUMAN RACE! (alt. ending: THEY LEAP INTO GOD (note: I don't actually believe he/she/it exists... but I've always liked the idea in t.v. shows ant suff))

The TV show was alright. Not great, but not exactly terrible, either. Then again, I'm not a huge fan of the books, so I didn't exactly mind the changes. The effects and acting could certainly have been better, but the same is true of a lot of shows.

[–]digitaldevil 1 point2 points ago

Don't expect it to be the same as the novels, but it's a fun "take" on Harry. All the episodes are on Hulu.

I thought the series was too much of a departure from the books, which were fantastic! Shoot, if the scriptwriters were so great, THEY would have a bestselling series instead of Jim Butcher!

Straight transliterations are worthless. If it's a good book, there's no point in making a movie/series if you're just going to do what the book did.

I'm still annoyed with the added insult to injury they gave poor wade at the end. Both the actress and character got fucked with so badly with that. As did the audience if they stayed the entire ride. Saw it on netflix earlier this year, and I just can't believe how much the show jumped downhill the second they dropped a hint about the professor leaving.

[–]otakucode 4 points5 points ago

I could see very interesting big things for Dollhouse is any continuation were done in the future world. How would society rebuild with actual mature knowledge of how the human mind works? How much would it be abused, but even more interestingly, how would society come to view themselves? A show that really tries to grasp and deal with advanced ideas of neuroscience, personality, and of course, to an extent, our modern changes in beliefs as a society, could be really cool... but I don't know how well it could be wrapped up and hidden to avoid the rabid anti-intellectualism of most of society.

If this was 1994, I'd have said Doctor Who first, then The Outer Limits second.

If this was 2003, I'd have still said Doctor Who first, then Battlestar Galactica second.

If you'd asked me last year, I would have said The Prisoner.*

Most of my geek TV fantasies have come true, but there are a few cartoons which deserve a resurrection.

* - For the record, I enjoyed the recent Prisoner reboot. The original Prisoner was equal parts Lewis Carroll and George Orwell. The reboot just replaced the Lewis Carroll part with Philip K. Dick, especially Ubik. The fractured narrative was intentional and part of the style, true to the inspiration source.

Firefly or Dollhouse. I'm not even a huge Whedon fan, but man, the characters are so well-rounded in those shows that you really get hooked. Reusing actors is a bit annoying since he seems to cast them in very similar roles (except Wash/Alpha... frig, it's weird seeing Wash like that). Since I bet a billion other people have already picked these two shows, I'll go for... Enterprise.

Yes, I said Enterprise. It sucked so badly that it became awesome. I loved how Hoshi was able to learn enough Klignon (with no primer and after commenting that it seemed to follow a sentence structure she couldn't figure out) in a couple hours to translate her way through a diplomatic situation. I loved how the writers would invent ways to get T'pal naked every second episode or so. I hated that damn dog and his cheese-eating. I love how contrived the cast-characters were. The Asian, the black guy, the cheeky American, the uptight Brit, the super-hot but untouchable chick, a different-from-all-the-other-captains captain... oh geez, all they were missing was some kind of freaky alien or holographic/robotic crew member.

Oh yeah, and Rod Stewart... dear Lord...

I know I already mentioned some others, but does anyone else think that White Dwarf deserves a rewrite.

No, not Red Dwarf. White Dwarf.

Two great ladies will catch your fall, they are the ones who catch us all. Their children kept them far apart; the Lady Light, the Lady Dark. Dark broken, light storm, dead spoken, dreams torn... and we will bring you home.

Most people don't realize that it was based on a Kurosawa film. From a comment on wikipedia:

What many people miss is that White Dwarf, for all of its fascinating sci-fi ideas and set-ups, is actually a re-make of Akira Kurosawa's classic film "Red Beard". Many people I know who love Kurosawa's movies don't even know that one but it is worth seeking out. Unlike many of the other samurai films, it is not about warriors but about doctors at a remote hospital in medieval Japan. The always outstanding Tishiro Mifune plays Red Beard, an iconoclastic doctor who refuses to play political games that would elevate him to the serving at the Royal Court preferring, instead, to remain at his "out in the sticks" hospital caring for the people of his village who need him. Into his world enters a young doctor who wants to do his time so he can then take a prestigious position as one of the Emperor's physicians. The plots of Red Beard and White Dwarf are identical... it is only the settings that are different. Watch them both back to back and you will gain a new appreciation of White Dwarf.
