I think during finals I have a stronger desire to run more. It helps clear your mind.

[–]scuba7183 31 points32 points ago

And it gives you an excuse to not study

[–]agentxq49 5 points6 points ago

It also forces you to sleep (since you're tired after running) and sleep is the process where short term memory is turned into long term memory.

So many people burn midnight oil to study for finals, but forget that sleep is more important for them to remember their material.

Amen to that.

This is true as a working professional as well. Work can be stressful at times. I'm definitely more on edge if I didn't get the chance to run or lift the night before.

First quarter of Grad School here. I have time to run to and from my car. That is all.

[–]CasimirCelerity 17 points18 points ago

And you're on reddit?

[–]sleeperpick 0 points1 point ago

I can browse Reddit at work, cant run though.

I am in the exact same situation and this is EXACTLY how I feel. Poo.

[–]glr123 4 points5 points ago

Haha you have time...ಥ_ಥ

Damn grad school.

[–]wondering_runner 2 points3 points ago

I feel your pain

[–]Dcamp[S] 2 points3 points ago

that's a bummer man, hopefully the exams go well then. Good luck!

And for faculty members who go out for runs even while grading all of those student papers!

Seriously though, I think go_panda_koh has it right - running is something that you should make time for during finals week. Often enough, you'll get more out of some time away from the books, being physically active, than you would have gained studying for the extra hour or two it takes you get a quick or medium run in.

I had to severely reduce my running about 4 weeks ago... Eager to get back at it starting Monday though.

[–]travass 3 points4 points ago

I'm finished school, but running got me through it. Each night when I was done studying I would run, gave me something to look forward to. A lot of people stop running during finals, don't do it, keep going.

Last semester of university here, I've been keeping up with my runs. I feel much better mentally after I've gone for my morning run so it helps with studying.

[–]trauma_queen 2 points3 points ago

And don't forget post-grad school kids! Just finished my 15 mile bike today and my 5 mile run yesterday during medical school tests...tough to fit in but SO worth it.

[–]Dcamp[S] 0 points1 point ago

Nice! Yeah I actually went running with my friend the other day whose in law school. He's finding it hard to fit it in as well.

[–]theadmiraljn 1 point2 points ago

I actually just started running again. Between school and work, I had completely lost my motivation for a while. ): Had a couple of nice runs this week and I already feel less stressed!

[–]Kourakis 1 point2 points ago

I normally have 20-25 hour of class/week (depending on lab schedules). During exam season, I might have ~3 exams/week (9 hours of exams). I do spend most of my days studying, but the "extra time" from not having classes to sit through seems to help me stick to my running schedule. It's not always easy to stick with it, but totally worth it in the long run (pardon the pun).

[–]kgold818 0 points1 point ago

Hey thanks! I'll take that positive reinforcement!

[–]KingOfAllBlacks 0 points1 point ago

Nope, rest week.

[–]wifeinthekitchen 1 point2 points ago

and now I feel guilty...

[–]buddybolden 0 points1 point ago

I've run three times maybe in the last month...

[–]learnwithoutD1 XC 0 points1 point ago

I got kicked off my team for studying the day before my hardest final instead of going to the team banquet, even though I did all of the runs that week. My coach is an asshole.

[–]travass 0 points1 point ago

wow your coach does sound like an asshole.

[–]just_keep_running 1 point2 points ago

Actually, exercising actually boosts memory (at least according to the below study)... so keeping up with your runs may actually be beneficial to your exam performance!

I remember hearing this in one of my psychology classes. Also, exercise puts you in a better mood.

[–]rolobrowntowntony 1 point2 points ago

I just ran to my class to turn in my final paper, left and just kept running. feels good man

[–]grundissimo 1 point2 points ago

I actually missed 3 days this week because of my finals although that's because I had 4 finals back to back Monday and Tuesday. I'm getting back into it today and can't wait.

[–]r0tc0d 1 point2 points ago

I always had more free time during finals? And working out daily was a must to keep my self sane.

[–]PrettyCoolGuy 2 points3 points ago

Me too. I loved finals week (and college in general). So much free time, all the time.

College was great. Working every day? Not so much.

[–]r0tc0d 0 points1 point ago

Meh, even though I'm pulling 12+ hrs a day right now, there's something to be said about leaving work and being totally done with it. I hated the anxiety of lab reports being due. When I'm off, I am off.

[–]PrettyCoolGuy 0 points1 point ago

That is a good point. I do like the fact that when I leave work, I'm DONE. That and the fact that I can buy food, beer and other minor purchases without worrying about the expense.
