Unfortunately, the wrath of /r/TwoXChromosomes was swift and absolute.

That's true for *all of Reddit. People rush to judgment, a witch hunt happens, and things can get really ugly.

I won't argue with you there. People really went all out after I_FRIENDZONE_CATS made his post, and purpleloki posted that rage comic.

They didn't bother to wait until theoculous responded to the accusation.

2x, with the same harshness of the people who wrongly accused theoculous, simply retaliated. We know it was definitely wrong of people to rush the judgment on theoculous in the first place -- whether the shit-storm from 2x afterwards was wrong, I can't say.

All I know for certain is that I_FRIENDZONE_CATS took the brunt of the 2x whiplash -- and he didn't deserve it. He very respectfully questioned the legitimacy of a claim, albeit a very emotional and sensitive claim.

I still feel a little bad for I_FRIENDZONE_CATS. He literally only said he was "the tiniest bit skeptical", but still offered his condolences.

...after searching through her comment history for evidence that might discredit her claims. He was polite and all, but that's still creepy, shitty, and irresponsible on a website that's as misogynistic as reddit. It's fine to be skeptical about things, but only if you stop and think about the possible consequences of what you say first. He didn't.

Still, thank you for the re-tell. Pretty shameful stuff and it's good that it's documented.

I don't think anyone would've realized that simple comment would've sparked the shitstorm that happened.

I mean, skepticism is good -- if our justice system didn't rely on skepticism, we'd all be guilty until proven innocent.

Given the fact that someone had just made it to the front page faking cancer earlier that day, I can understand why he was skeptical. Also, if anyone thinks their comment history is private on this site, they really shouldn't be posting here.

The only reason I feel bad for him, is because he seemed like he legitimately felt bad for what he had caused; and because there were a lot of other, real douchebags who commented in that thread who deserved it more.

But I'd rather not make this about I_FRIENDZONE_CATS. theoculous was the real victim. Having to abandon your throwaway account doesn't compare to being sexually assaulted IRL, then insulted on a website.

I think this is bang on and that we mainly agree. However, I'm worried by reddit's "default" skepticism. Being skeptic is hugely important in certain contexts, like the sciences (big redditor demographic). But when you apply that too zealously to other situations, especially emotional ones, people get hurt. And get death threats. Talk about insult to injury.

You scared me...I thought this had happened again.

But thanks for putting this together, the next time I see Redditors sharpening their pitchforks I will link here.

I'm curious about what you call the Wrath of TwoX. What makes you think anyone contributed to the deletion of that account? (Especially considering the account in question seems to be one of the many semi-throwaways that sprung up after the popularity of I_RAPE_CATS, most of which are not still active.)

There's a difference between unactive and full-out deleted, I'd say.

It's definitely wasn't just TwoX, but after theoculous's second post to TwoX, I_FRIENDZONE_CATS took a verbal beating from the posters there. There were other people, real douchebags in that thread who deserved it more than the guy who simply pointed out that she has a history of rape-activism and makeup artistry. I mean, he even sincerely apologized afterwards and made a post somewhere in the thread saying he had talked with theoculous and it seemed like her situation was legit.

The main reason I_FRIENDZONE_CATS pointed it out in the first place was that not a few hours earlier someone lied about having cancer. I don't think he was wrong to say "Hey, theoculous, you might want to post some further proof because we can't believe this photo right now." What was wrong, however, was for the hivemind to take that as a green-light to unleash a lot of hateful comments on someone who ended up actually being a legitimate victim.
