Ahh!!!...that's where the 'Saved' articles are hidden...jeeze..

Does "recommended" do anything for anybody? It doesn't work for me (empty page, "there doesn't seem to be anything here"). If it doesn't work, or isn't useful even if it does work, then why not just change more to 'saved', which is useful?

Is there more stuff in that pulldown if you're an admin or something?

The "Top" link does not work for me. I just get a bunch of repeated links about Atheism, tasers and marijuana legalization.

If you're a subreddit mod there's an "admin" link, which goes to the same place as "edit" in the moderators/contributors/etc. side links.

I have this exact same problem. Recommended does not work for me at all and I contacted reddit via feedback and they have never answered.

You must absolutely hate that "recently viewed links" thing then...

They could still fit it in if they moved the user/preferences/logout links to align from the top of the blue instead of the bottom so it does not cover up the "more" tabs.

yay for EEE PC People! I have the 701 4g surf, back when a deal for it was $250.

I rarely make my browser wider than 1000 pixels. I get serious claustrophobia from the Windows-style "make every app fullscreen" way of working.

Do you use a tiling window manager?

[–]kopkaas2000 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, just the regular OSX deal. I just like to be able to click to windows that are in the background without going through alt-tab or expose. On average I have about 40 open windows, mostly browsers, editors and terminals. I make them slightly overlap but keep them positioned in such a way that in most cases I can click through to a window I want without moving other windows or tabbing.

In theory I should like tiling window managers, but their organizational structure is too rigid for my likes. I have the same problem with working on multiple desktops: Lots of windows I open do not follow a careful plan and cannot be pinned into a specific category, or they will stray from their original purpose.

Heh, on the Mac I'll do anything I can not to use the mouse. Whoever designed the Mighty Mouse deserves a special ring of Hell.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I use screen and emacs quite a lot and it takes a while to get used to.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

Good sir, why not get a different mouse then? I'm lovin my Logitech.

[–]revb 0 points1 point ago

Any particular model you prefer? I am also about to toss my mighty mouse out the window in frustration but have been too lazy to research what a good long term mouse would be.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've got a Logitech LX7, which is nice cuz it has 2 extra buttons which I use for Exposé and Dashboard, it's wireless, and the scroll wheel tilts to scroll sideways too. It's not bluetooth, so the receiver or whatever you'd call it takes up a USB spot, but aside from that it's great. I'd strongly advise against using the Logitech Control Center software for it though. It works just fine out of the box. LCC does allow you to do some things that you can't without it, but it also messes up Growl and, in my opinion, makes the mouse movement feel weird.

[–]revb 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks, that does look like a nice mouse. I'll give it a try. I am getting reeaaaly tired of this damned mighty mouse.

Don't you find it incredibly messy when you can see several windows open behind the one you are using?

[–]kopkaas2000 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As you might have guessed, I'm quite chaotic in nature, so that doesn't bother me, I think I even kind of like it. It's like a pile of stuff that your wife keeps complaining about, but you know where everything is. And then, one day, she cleans up the pile and you can never find anything ever again.

I'm really a big fan of expose. Just one button press and I can see all my windows. I actually get annoyed with tabs on my browser sometimes because they take up more space than I like. I like to see as much internet as I possibly can. Too bad firefox is missing the one good feature that IE had: f11.

[–]deodrus 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What're you talking about ?

Firefox does fullscreen too. It's the F-11 key.

But if you really want maximum fullscreen, get this:

Fullerscreen: http://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4650

...

EDIT: Oh, I see you're on a Mac. "This extension does not work on Mac."

[–]revb 0 points1 point ago

Obligatory "Me Too!" post. I am also a big fan of the "organized sloppy assed mess" methodology of window management.

[–]Prysorra 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know, shoving the web in a small "sub"-screen seems just as claustrophobic.

[–]kopkaas2000 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most websites optimize at a width of 1024, so I'm not usually missing anything. Of those that don't fit, most have useless junk in their right column anyway. For the few that really don't fit, I'll resize my window while muttering some insults.

Also, I hate it if text runs really wide and you get all these one line paragraphs in a document.

[–]achroma 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is claustrophobia really the word you meant to use? I would figure agoraphobia.

[–]kopkaas2000 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I mean it in the sense of not being able to see what's outside of the current window. I'm trapped in the foreground application. Seeings bits and pieces of the underlying desktop makes my world feel bigger.

[–]jillg 6 points7 points ago

Can you customize what links you want up there, if not, why?

[–]last_useful_man 4 points5 points ago

So you're saying it's not nearly as important as the 'saved' link? More people are interested in the posts they have personally saved than they are controversial posts.

my brother pointed out the same thing to me the other day. I had never thought about it before. Obfuscation to save 1 link's worth of space. goofy

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points ago

They're smooshed together up there because Recommended is the red-headed stepchild of site features.

[–]AttackingHobo 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are doing this to save one characters width in space. The recommended button should be removed as it has not done anything for more than half a year, so the only thing that works in the "more" button is "saved"

[–]subcypher 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. Some people do have netbooks. I have an Asus Eee PC 901 with a 9" screen running 1024x600 resolution. I run Ubuntu Linux Netbook Remix on it, so my OS is designed for a small screen. Even with font adjustments and add-ons to Firefox that maximize screen real estate, there is no more room in that bar.

[–]Sisyphean 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe tiny icons for 'saved' and 'recommended' with tooltips?

I don't much care for the 'more' pull-down either.

[–]pavel_lishin 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can you show us a screenshot? There's plenty of room in OS X with Firefox resized to 1024x600.

There's plenty of room on my Aspire One (same res, same size screen)...

I do however have my fonts set to 10pt, 85DPI to maximize available screen space.

It is getting to be clear that websites need to start building at least 2 versions of the interface. One for regular monitors and one for netbooks. A third may be needed for iPhone-esque devices.

I started throwing together a mock-up of what mobile reddit could look like... It's nowhere near "done" (it's hardly even "started") but reddit is free to use anything from it.

Very nice work. Have you shown this to the admins?

[–]jk3us 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was going to put a little more work into it first. I'm imagining that it will initially show score and # of comments and when you select an item, it grows to show you the nitty grtty and allow you to save/hide/etc that item and go to the linked page and comments.

Comments page could look similar, but I don't know how to deal with deep threads on the small screen. All the functionality should be there.

[–]maj0rm0j0[S] -1 points0 points ago

Another thought. I think the list of links on that bar is dynamic. I see just a little bit of text to the right of "MORE". When I hover over that I see it's actually a link for the music subreddit. My guess is that bar just displays as much as you give it room for.

[–]maj0rm0j0[S] -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was talking about the "more" tab on the homepage of reddit that has the tabs "what's hot", "new", "controversial" and "top" beside it.

[–]tritelife 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not always. Some reddits have longer than usual names and/or wide logos. http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/8697/watmm.png

That's at 1024 which w3schools claims has a 36% marketshare. http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp

Admittedly redditall.com statistics say about 10% 1024px and below. 1280px width is the most common overall.

edit: Here's an even better example from IAmA: http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/7339/iama.png

[–]maj0rm0j0[S] -1 points0 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand completely, but the vast majority of users have plenty of room as you can see by this post's upmods. There has to be a better way to make the layout so we don't have a drop-down box for just 2 links.

[–]tritelife 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree entirely. From a usability standpoint, the current method is unfavorable.

edit: The REDDIT.COM link is the name of the subreddit you're in. ;)

[–]twowheels 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've not done much web programming. Can't you switch style sheets based on the screen resolution and make it adapt? There's got to be some way to dynamically make it switch to match the browser size!

[–]insomniac84 0 points1 point ago

[–]Rosco7 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They would like for you to forget about the "Recommended" feature, since it's never worked very well, but they don't want to outright remove it because that will inevitably make someone mad. Likewise, they'd rather not have you looking through your saved pages that much either, since before long you'll have enough of them that you'll want to be able to search through them, and that's never worked well either. So both of those features are hidden under "More", where they hope you'll just forget about them.

[–]Pinkfloyd12 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you can search through the thousands of subreddits?

[–]maj0rm0j0[S] -1 points0 points ago*

[–]maj0rm0j0[S] 2 points3 points ago

With Firefox the More link is even a pixel to far left, you can open a "random" reddit when clicking at the right most position.

(I bet they are using CSS not tables,...)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wrong 'More' link, you're talking about the reddit bar across the top, they're talking about the 'More' tab next to 'Top'.

And the reddit bar simply works like that, there is a long list of about 50 (near random) subreddits that is in the div, with the 'More' link above it, so naturally if you miss slightly, you'll get something from the links underneath.
