Had a baby in Pittsburgh lately? I want your OB/GYN recommendations. (self.pittsburgh)
submitted 10 months ago by aequanimita
The husband and I are thinking of embarking on some reproduction soon, and I'd like to get established with a good OB/GYN. Does anyone have one that they like, particularly who delivers at Magee, and is open to collaboration with midwives?

I had my little guy at Magee in February. All of the "Midwives at Magee" are fantastic and you can see them for all your regular pre-natal care.

Thanks! That's the 2nd recommendation for midwives at Magee, seems like it might be a good way to go.

Also, Magee has a significantly lower C-section rate than the national average, and other regional hospitals. That was important for me, as I wanted as little unnecessary medical intervention as possible.

You might want to contact The Midwife Center to see if they have any recommendations. They were able to handle most of the prenatal stuff, and work with various Ob/Gyns if needed.

Seconded, thirded and fourthed.

I know I'll break with almost everyone else here, but my wife and I had a bad experience with Magee. In general, the "revolving door" operation there is a bit too crazy, in my opinion. It's like the WalMart of birth centers.
The only reason Magee would be needed or useful at all is the Level 3 NICU, but that's only important if something goes terribly wrong (or you know your little one will need it ahead of time).
Our second one is almost here, and we're going to St. Clair.
How has your St. Clair experience been so far? I am kind of interested in going outside of UPMC for privacy reasons (I'm a medical student within the system). I'm also interested in a midwife-- are they friendly about that kind of stuff? Is their labor & delivery unit as nice as Magee's? Thanks for your input!
I'd say it's nicer, but that's subjective, I suppose. The recovery rooms are much bigger than the ones at Magee, and the room you deliver in is the room you stay in, which is nice.
As for the midwife thing, I'm fairly certain most hospitals are fine with that? Although, my wife and I aren't using one (and didn't before).
In general, the thing we like the most about St. Clair is the amount of people there -- or rather, lack of people. We're Pitt Alumni, so we're not strangers to Oakland, but honestly, Magee was a pain to get into, get out of, and the ward itself was just a revolving door of staff, patients and visitors. No privacy, and very little peace and quiet.
St Clair, on the other hand, we saw a few nurses, no other patients or visitors, and the place just seemed downright tranquil.
I realize testimonials aren't really statistically significant, and Magee is statistically a wonderful hospital, but for what it's worth, the craziness at Magee actually had a medical implication for us.
When they took my wife for an ultrasound, to check for bleeding/clots, they actually lost her in a hallway for 90 minutes -- after discovering clots in her uterus. She had passed out in the wheelchair they had put her in, from the blood loss, and no one remembered to check on her in the hallway in which they left her.
After they "found" her, a team of people in an obvious near panic, rushed into our room and gave her a D&C on the spot, using only morphine and not really giving it any time to kick in before starting the procedure.
Really, we're just looking for a hospital where the staff has enough time and focus to actually pay attention to their patients.
Yikes, that's really a horror story! I hope everyone is okay now. The patient volume (as a negative thing) is something I hadn't considered before, so thanks!

We had our daughter at Magee during the blizzard of 2010, none of the doors were revolving then. ; )

Dr. Logan at Century Medical is super nice. I don't know where he delivers now because I had my kids at West Penn (I think they closed that part).
[–]steve626 1 point2 points3 points 10 months ago
We used the Midwives at Magee. They were all very nice and as intrusive as you want them to be. But I would caution you to ask for for an ultrasound when you are 6-8 weeks before the due date, our daughter was breach and they only did digital inspections, but that is what we wanted.
If you are looking for a pediatrician recommendation we really, really like GIL pediatrics in the East End (above Trader Joes). Good luck!
So.... they don't normally do ultrasounds? They do all the standard prenatal care, right? I want my triple-screen, my OGTT, my 18-week US, regular exams for fetal heart tones.... I just don't necessarily want an OB/GYN pushing Ptocin and forcing me into the lithotomy position while I'm delivering.
[–]steve626 2 points3 points4 points 10 months ago
They'll do whatever you want. My wife didn't want too many Ultrasounds, we had 2 or 3 early on, including the big anatomy one. But she's the wife, I make her happy. They gave a few vaginal exams and assured us that the baby was head-down and in great position. Then on our last exam before the due date, they had second thoughts, did an Ultrasound, found out that the baby was Australian and rushed us into an External Version. That didn't work at all and we scheduled a C-section for the following Monday, 2 days before the due date. But my wife went into labor that Friday, Feb 5th, and it started snowing and After 3 different times shoveling the car out that night we left for Magee at 1AM. We had to drive around a stuck plow and go the wrong way up 5th Ave (in the bus lane) but made it there. A slight caveat, we lived in Oakland, so it wasn't like we had to drive in miles of snow covered roads. But we couldn't have the baby at home and my wife ended being dilated about 6 inches by the time we got in to the OR and got the baby out. Our OR team had already been there for their shift and couldn't leave, nobody could get in. And then our kid had fluid in her lungs and spent the next 5 days in the NICU. But she is now almost 17 months old, perfect, healthy, huge (wearing 24 month clothes) and is currently driving me crazy. tl,dr: The midwives at Magee will do whatever you want. If you want to have an ultrasound every week, I'm sure that they'll do that. They'll also read your 5-page birth plan and agree to follow it (my wife's an engineer), so if you want a natural childbirth, they are the ones to go with. Just try to have the kid in the Summer ; )
Okay nevermind, their website states clearly that they do all the ACOG-recommended testing. I'm pretty comfortable with palpation for determining my late-3rd-trimester positioning, since I'm in the medical field.... but I'll keep that in mind! :)
I frickin LOVE GIL! We see Dr. Frank primarily, who is just the kindest, most nurturing woman ever, and have seen a couple others as well including the lovely Dr. Glick, who founded the place. Also they're a "green" building!

This doesn't answer your question but have you considered a Doula as well? Personally I think everyone should have one if they are planning on having a baby. If you haven't heard of them, they basically are your coach and mentor until you have the baby, while you are in labor, and for a few weeks post-birth. more info
I can recommend a fantastic Pittsburgh doula if you are interested!
I am interested, but I'm not sure how it all folds in with midwives and OB/GYNs.... at some point there's too many cooks in the kitchen. I would probably want to give birth in or near (as in next-door) to a hospital -- I am just TOO well-educated about the things that can go wrong. But I don't necessarily want an OB/GYN to be the primary deliverer, due to their insistence on lithotomy position, higher likelihood of receiving Ptocin for the doctor's convenience, etc.
Why is this so complicated??
[–]infiniteatbest 0 points1 point2 points 10 months ago
I agree with ou completely.
Most insurance companies cover doulas, I would definitely get one if you know yours does.

Magee's birthing center and delivery is great, and I was seen in their Yellow Unit. It was crowded and I didn't like the OB visits there. There was one time I stood in the room for 3 hours, 8 months along, while my doctor was taking walk ins and my appointment was completely ignored. If you can get into the Red or Blue units, my experience with them was much better.
My only issue whatsoever with L&D was that my husband was kind of ignored and looked down on by the nurses and doctors during the early morning shift while I was in labor, presumeably because we were 19 and 21 and our last names were still different, but either way I didn't like it. Other than that tiny tidbit they were great.

Midwife center @ 29th & Penn. On delivery day, we were in & out, back home where we should be 5 hrs later. AGH is a few mins away in case of emergency. Medicine is awesome, but some things shouldn't be overcomplicated and clinical, such as childbirth.
