What is the one best picture winner you thought was undeserving? (self.movies)
submitted 3 months ago by THESHEEMED
Mine was Gladiator, i actually really hated that movie.

Chicago
[–]t3h_jream 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
if for no reason other than the fact it beat Gangs of New York which is a fucking masterstroke.
[–]callmecatalyst 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Came here to say this. Also, I'm a fan of musicals but Chicago was fucking stupid.
[–]Starbugg1 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Yes, this. Somebody tell me what was revolutionary, socio-politically fitting or original about this film?
[–]quincy1998 14 points15 points16 points 3 months ago
CRASH. A self-important, tedious bore that played like an after-school special for adults while shamelessly ripping off MAGNOLIA and SHORT CUTS. Not surprisingly, the screenwriter was a Scientologist.
[–]curbstompery 14 points15 points16 points 3 months ago
Shakespeare in Love. Biggest upset ever.
[–]sjwillis 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
Note: It beat Saving Private Ryan.
[–]MrTallgeese 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Note: Note: It beat Life is Beautiful.
[–]urbanplowboy 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Note: Note: Note: May as well throw The Thin Red Line in there as well.
[–]tengu1337 -2 points-1 points0 points 3 months ago
lol the thin red line sucked. just a bunch of pretentious vague philosophy with added violence to attract more people
[–]NCPhatesTucson 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
I'm an idiot. FTFY
[–]rbaix 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Many best picture awards come out of fleeting hype. The Oscars would be more meaningful if they waited at least five years to vote.
[–]ibleedblu7 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
How Green Was My Valley (1942) beating out Citizen Kane.
[–]jaspermp94 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
The academy's biggest mistake, I think.
[–]callmecatalyst 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
My Fair Lady beating Dr. Strangelove. Unacceptable.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Ordinary Movie, I mean People.
[–]quincy1998 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Maybe this movie got nods because, unlike so many mediocre movies of the 80s, it wasn't completely stupid.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I don't think it was a bad movie. I quite enjoyed it, actually. I just think the better choice would have been Raging Bull.
[–]jam3zz 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
The King's Speech. So many better movies that year
[–]sjwillis 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
My girlfriend and I were rooting for The Social Network all night. The King's Speech was by far too predictable and formulaic.
There once was a king who couldn't talk well. He tried real hard and just couldn't do it. But then, when he needed to do really well at a particular speech, he tried really, really hard and he did good.
My wife and I saw The King's Speech anf The Fighter back to back one night before the Oscars. All we could talk about afterwards was how much better we thought The Fighter was, not to mention the other great films that year. Very dissapointing.
[–]puglovers 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
Whatever wins this year, Drive and 50/50 are more deserving
[–]THESHEEMED[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Their spots were filled by The Help and War Horse
[–]MNico 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
If that's so, then what poor film got its spot taken by Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close?

[–]MNico 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
Exactly. I keep imagining if everyone were to ask the Academy why it is nominated, their answer would simply be "Well, you know... because 9/11."
[–]LosAngelesSean 11 points12 points13 points 3 months ago
Crash was mine. Also Forrest Gump as it beat Shawshank Redemption
[–]quincy1998 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Yes, CRASH is ... ugh.
[–]t3h_jream 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
Let us not forget that it also beat out Pulp Fiction which i see as an equal (if not even slightly larger) travesty.
[–]Xandari11 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
to be fair, 1994 was a really good year for movies. I still want to say that The Lion King was my favorite movie from 94, even though Shawshank and Forrest Gump are 2 of my favorites. and that was the year Jim Carrey took off too with The Mask and Dumb and Dumber both coming out. oh yeah, and True Lies was 1994 too, one of my all time favorites.
And Pulp Fiction! 1994 was a stellar year. Quiz Show was also nominated.. not that great in comparison, but better than most of the movies that have won Oscars the last ten years.

Hurt Locker.
[–]cellarmonkey 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I prefer calling it Turd Locker.
[–]nothin_but_quotes 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago*
Slumdog Millionaire.
It just wasn't really captivating or anything special, in my opinion. I thought District 9 was much better.
Edit: District 9 should have beaten The Hurt Locker, The Wrestler should have beaten Slumdog Millionaire.
[–]tengu1337 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
district 9 was one of the most overrated movies ive ever seen

[–]puglovers 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
D9 came out a year after Slumdog
[–]nothin_but_quotes 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Well, I guess it did.
I think The Wrestler was the best of 09 by a large margin and it wasn't even nominated.
...The Wrestler came out in 08
[–]nothin_but_quotes 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
It was nominated in the same Oscars as Slumdog Millionaire.
[–]Charidzard 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Slumdog Milionnaire released a month before The Wrestler in the US.
[–]Starbugg1 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago*
At least Slumdog had cultural relevance and was a bit novel in style, which is more than some of the other movies that have won in the past.
[–]qazaibomb 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
hurt locker over inglorious basterds, up or even district 9, all of which were better imo.
just curious, am i the only one who liked crash? i feel like i am
[–]lunishidd 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I liked Crash aswell. :) I don't know but is it the case that people from the US dont like this movie generally ?
[–]puglovers 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I like Crash a lot. I also like Shakespeare in Love quite a bit, but still like Saving Private Ryan.
[–]urbanplowboy 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I liked Crash. The message was definitely predictable and forced, but everything else about it was very well done (acting, lighting, editing, etc.).
[–]quincy1998 -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
But story is everything. If the story is condescendingly teaching you something you already learned in 5th grade and has an unearned sense of "enlightenment", then it's really just a piece of shit.
[–]kresblain 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Around the World in 80 Days. It beat The Searchers, The Killing, Giant.
[–]t3h_jream 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I'm prepared to take some shots for this but Return of the King. Not a fan of the film series as a whole (loved the books, they are far more suited for that format) but i mean c'mon...better than Mystic River? I think not.
[–]Starbugg1 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Fellowship was a better 'film' when you remove it from the rest of the trilogy. At least with ROTK, it's like they were awarding the entire production, which was quite an epic endeavor. Fan or not, the amount of passion and detail that went into that deserves some recognition. Not to mention it triggered a film industry in New Zealand of all places.
[–]gambalore 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
The one? It'd be easier to count up the ones that WERE deserving of being called Best Picture of the Year. Every year, people complain about the nominees and winners, call the awards irrelevant, and then go back to somehow caring about it again the next year.
[–]Militant-Pacifist 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
The only acceptable answer is CRASH.
[–]samdog09 -1 points0 points1 point 3 months ago
the kings speech!!!!
[–]Wolfvillite 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I agree with The Hurt Locker, I watched it after all of the hype was created and it was nominated for best picture. It honestly wasn't that great in my opinion
[–]that_orange_guy 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Most recently, The King's Speech. Black Swan deserved it.
[–]weded 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I was watching the Oscars live hoping Black Swan would win, sadly it didn't.
[–]yourfacegoddamnit 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Slum dog millionaire, how it beat a movie like the dark knight is boggles my mind
[–]slackerdc 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Yeah Gladiator for me also. Crouching Tiger was a MUCH better movie.
