1> Unlike any other movie I've seen. 2> Occasionally think about it for days (now weeks) afterwards.

These are two important things that make it a 'great movie' in my mind. I'm not going to invite a group of friends over to try and get them to enjoy it, though. I know that won't happen. But, it's enough that it made an impact on me, and I loved it, yet I don't really feel the need to share it with everyone. If that makes sense?

My understanding is that von Trier wrote this after going through a serious depression. Justine has what's supposed to be happiest day of her life, and isn't happy, and spends the beginning of the second half of the film behaving like a depressive. And she is the only one who makes peace with the impending apocalypse. Everyone else fully freaks out, goes into denial, or commits suicide. Justine is one who remains alive and awake up til the end, and even meets it without tears, being the brave one for Claire. So maybe I'm reaching, but I feel like the film was about the fact that you have to hit bottom before you can recover from depression--that it's a romanticization of depression.

I think thats a very good point. I hadn't understood part one until now. Just saw the movie last night and I identified with an apocalyptic fear that I feel is ubiquitous in our nightmares. After watching this movie though I feel less inclined to stop worrying and love the bomb.

I just watched the movie last night. Although it had its flaws, the ending made it worthwhile- one of the most powerful movie endings I have ever seen. The surrealism and cinematography reminded me of The Fall.

My wife had a good insight into the movie after watching it. She thinks that no one could understand Justine's depression as it is this invisible thing, people basically tell her not to feel it and get over it. Whereas in the second part the depression(Melancholia) is this huge planet about to destroy everything. Justine is familiar with the feeling of impending doom and is able to take it all in, whilst they rest are completely unprepared for it.
