I think it may have been when she first saw the planet and she asked 'what star is that?' After Kiefer gives her the answer it's quite possible that she knew right then that something was wrong - which could be the reason why she didn't want to be married anymore since she knew everyone would die anyway. That's just my opinion.

she does not fall apart right away, but she gets increasingly worse, until she stabilizes in the end and accepts it. I wonder if it happens because she goes from realizing that something is not right to the full realization of the imminent end.

yes, as the film progresses we see her getting more and more worse. Especially the second half. Great movie though, definitely one of my favourites of 2011

Read the wiki page it will all make sense.

This may be unrelated to what you're asking, but I assumed that Justine was always depressed, even before the wedding. She was always fighting it. Melancholia peaked her interest and I felt she became almost content with her depression knowing that everything was going to be destroyed.

I didn't feel she could foresee in to the future, although that makes some sense. I just took it as she realized she didn't have to care anymore. Although, the seeing into the future thing makes sense showing as even when Melancholia begins to drift away from Earth, she still seems indifferent.

I do not think Melancholia ever drifted away from the Earth, it was a deception Kiefer's character used to calm down his wife, the planet was getting closer and closer. But you could be right, Justine might have been depressed even before, but she also definitely could tell things beyond what normal people can. Like the other redditor mentioned, she said "I know things" and she knew how many beans were in a jar even before they were counted. So, when I think about it now, she might as well known about Melancholia at that point.

In either way, I think the movie is beautiful, Justine falls apart and finally finds her center, while her sister, the obvious "normal" person, falls apart and cannot face anything. Amazing juxtaposition of characters, probably the best I've seen in a long time.

Doesn't Melancholia head towards Earth, then begin to drift away as shown with Claire and the make-shift circle-tool she uses? Then the next day she uses it again and realizes Melancholia is bigger than the circle-tool again?

No no no, Justine knows things because she is incredibly smart. She has learned about it long before anyone believed in it, and had the real scoop when everybody else listened to the science. It was forecasted to miss Earth, and she was aware of this.

how does she know how many beans in the jar then? She gives the exact number.

She is smart. Yea, I know.. the exact number, but this still makes more sense than "she is magic".

To quote Justine: "I know things."

so you think she knew it from the very beginning? It changes everything then, because she was able to act normal for wa-a-ay too long then. Maybe that is why her nickname was Steelbreaker?
