Well, dunno what comments you're welcoming, losing weight is only one part of the equation, pretty much every thing else about health and well-being seems to favour the LCHF lifestyle.

Good luck on your journey.

Why not check out paleo? You don't have to be low carb on paleo by any means, you are just cutting out the poisonous grains and sugar.

[–]FineArtLiquidator 1 point2 points ago

Grains and sugar: the stuff I crave. Waaah. Okay, I'm better now.

I hope you find something that works for you and the door is always open to come back. Like you say, you know keto works and it can just be a little hard sticking to the diet sometimes, but it is work sticking to it to lose the weight.

I wish people wouldn't think of keto as a weight loss diet. Weight loss can be a bullet point for it, but I think it should be listed at the bottom.

Or directly after Fat Loss.

[–]FineArtLiquidator 1 point2 points ago

Weight loss is all that many, if not most, people care about when they consider changing how they eat.

Ketosis is both a blessing and a curse. Its great to see the purple on the sticks and know you are doing well even if the weight isnt melting off. However it can be really disheartening when you get kicked out because you ate, 2 cookies, or a few pieces of bread.

keto isn't the most flexible diet. My current plan is similar to yours. I am going to be super strict on Keto for February and then re-evaluate. I am starting to think Keto isn't right for me. I am often satisfied with meals, but rarely happy, I miss carbs, they are by far my favorite foods, and I think I would be better off just counting calories and eating whatever I want.

[–]DaveMan10 0 points1 point ago

I find it much harder then eating two cookies to get me kicked out of ketosis. I had a burger Saturday night, ate the bun, had a few beers (mostly drank captain and diet) and pigged out on some Doritos. The next morning I was still in low on the keto stick and back in medium range by the night

Yep, some people can eat more carbs and stay in ketosis, while others must eat fewer carbs to stay in ketosis. It's all about finding your own balance.

Binging like the OP is doing will kill any diet plan.

[–]FineArtLiquidator 1 point2 points ago

Interesting. I might try to nudge my simple carbohydrate intake by a few tens of grams and see how the pee stick talks back at me in the morning. Right now I'm eating practically zero carbs with the exception of green, leafy veggies.

[–]logantauranga[S] -2 points-1 points ago

I didn't say I was bingeing.

What?

PurpleSticks would be a great keto redditor name.

Good luck on your weight loss journey. A few things to keep in mind during your transition out of keto:

  1. Expect to gain back 3-8 pounds pretty quickly in the form of water weight.
  2. Don't be shocked if you find yourself feeling sluggish after meals with all those carbs suddenly back in your system.

[–]mozaleia6 months/ -40lbs 0 points1 point ago

I wish you luck on your journey. I came here from a low-cal low-fat diet and I have never been happier with my choice. as much as I wish you success I also hope to see you back here, you will be welcomed if it fails but expect to see a few "told you sos" :) remember it's a lifestyle not a diet(but the great weight loss is a HUGE perk)

[–]nothingtoseehere28189/145/125 1 point2 points ago

I think there are a lot of people who do keto beyond just for loosing weight. Some of us do it because of metabolic issues (in which case, doing a high carb low cal doesn't work), some do it becaue the more they read about grains the less they want to eat them. Some do it because they just feel better like this.

If that doesn't apply to you and you're just not happy, then I hope doing low cal works. Personally, I'll never go back to eating grains/sugar, it's just not worth it.

[–]jamessnow 11 points12 points ago

During the first four months I didn't have any carb cravings at all, but since then it's been pretty bad and I can't seem to make it a week without kicking myself out of ketosis by eating high-carb foods.

This seems pretty silly to me. Almost like saying: "I really need to start taking drugs again, I'm having cravings for cocaine and on the weekends I slip up and do some. Wish me luck on my journey."

[–]logantauranga[S] 4 points5 points ago

I don't think this is a particularly fair comparison. Keto isn't a cult, and it's unhelpful to engage in hyperbole to demonize outsiders.

[–]jamessnow 9 points10 points ago

You asked for comments, I pointed out something that logically doesn't make sense to me. I'm not demonizing you or saying that anyone who doesn't follow keto is a bad person. Far from it, keto has no bearing on my judgement of people. My best friend doesn't follow keto and I don't care. But if they ask me for a comment on something they are doing, I will tell them I think it's unhealthy.

[–]honbebParticipating in No-Weigh February 1 point2 points ago

logantauranga, you don't deserve to be downvoted for that comment - it was perfectly cogent and a reminder not to be exclusive/judgmental towards the OP who is flattering this sub by asking for our help.

[JUST SAYIN' ;)]

[–]Kryptonicus 2 points3 points ago

I'd welcome your comments, because I think quitting/pausing keto is as much part of the conversation here as starting keto is.

I agree. If keto is the only thing you've tried and it has stopped working then how else will you get the results you want without trying something else.

I wouldn't force yourself to try anything for six months though. You should have an idea whether it's working before then. I second the suggestions regarding paleo/primal. They both offer a reasonable framework around which to build a sustainable diet.

Regardless check back in and tell us how it goes. Most of all, good luck.

Would you buy the first house the Realtor showed you? Of course not. Check out what's out there. Figure out what works for. As long as you have your overall heath at the forefront, you really can't lose. Good luck!

[–]manvstechLean Mean Fat Loving Machine 3 points4 points ago

Not saying good byes because we'll see you back in six months.

[–]logantauranga[S] -1 points0 points ago

LOL probably. But last time I did a low-cal eat-whatever diet I lost 60lb over 18 months and got into the best shape of my life. I just need to compare the two and see which one is more liveable. It may be that I switch around a bit to keep my motivation high, so even if low-cal goes really well I could be back for the hell of it just to change up my routine.

[–]karmiclychee 1 point2 points ago

I was doing strict Keto until about December, when I hit a good profile (I measure by belt loops since I don't want a scale). After that I loosened up and just started focusing on low carb rather than straight Keto. The only difference between my eating now and eating before Keto is that I count flour as sugar. That is to say, the abstract sugar quota I used to have in my head in the past now has grains and starches counting against it.

The long and short of it is that I just don't eat grains, starches, or sugars as part of my main meals and make them snacks or desserts. I get to eat that stuff guilt/regret free since I know that the indulgence is pretty quickly burnt off by the rest of my low carb lifestyle.

[–]konquererzI hate spare tires 0 points1 point ago

This is interesting. I was the opposite. I switch from low calorie diets to keto. The main reason was that I was always hungry and never satisfied unless I went carb crazy. This lack of satisfaction made it difficult to stay on diet. Thinks like hamburgers and sausages and bacon are to high in calorie to have enough to enjoy on a low cal diet.

But you know your body better than anyone, so if keto is becoming to difficult then switch it up. Just dont give up on yourself, eating healthy and losing weight are worth the pain and effort.

IMO, the most important factor in any diet is whether or not it's healthy. But the second most important factor is whether or not it's a sustainable lifestyle for you.

I'm a month in and I'm really enjoying keto, but if it isn't something you can maintain, you may well be better off switching to something else that you can stick with in the long run. In the end, it's all about finding out what works best for you, and making a habit of it.

Best of luck!

Best of luck! Us keto'ers like to think that it's the be all, end all of diets, but for some people, their particular makeup may mean that keto isn't the optimal diet for them.

Please, keep us informed of your progress as you transition out of this. As another poster said, expect some immediate water weight gain and other issues. And I'm highly curious as to whether there is a transition period, kinda like a reverse 'keto flu' and also how you feel after you go completely over.

Is the problem that you're miserable all the time? Or that you get these overpowering cravings that you must submit to, once in a while?

If you are content eating keto most of the time, why not just have cheat allowances? Maybe it'll knock you out of ketosis - but look at it as a weekly or monthly goal vs. a daily failure.

If your maintenance daily calorie limit is around 1800 (for example), and you know you want to eat a 500 calorie eclair on Sunday morning, why not just give yourself a cheat buffer throughout the week? Knock off 100 cal a day to "reserve" towards a cheat?

I can't speak to what your cravings are like or whether you're able to stay in ketosis if you indulge them. Do you care if you're in ketosis?

If the problem is that you have simply "run out of steam" aka WILL POWER... then I would venture a guess that this may not be a realistic diet for you.

There is no sense in being miserable! That will only lead to packing the pounds right back on!
