/r/kansascity, what do you LOVE about KC? (self.kansascity)
submitted 1 year ago by KinnerMode
Me? I love stuffing myself full of wings at the Peanut, driving down Ward Parkway with the windows down on a summer day, and the fact that we're the epicenter of one of the biggest rivalries in all of sports.
What about you?
[–]kagrocery 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Westport. Sitting on the patio at Harpo's/Harry's/McCoy's/Foundry/Californo's/Kelly's and drinking a cold hoppy beverage. Just got back from the Foundry, actually...
[–]Ninjakitty07 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
I love being at Arrowhead on Sundays. Nobody rocks a stadium like KC does.
I love that our community college system is just about the best value in the country. It was named college of the year a few years ago by TIME Magazine and the Princeton Review, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a less expensive place to take classes.
I love the food!
I love that we have a great variety of festivals and events that celebrate different cultures, the arts, and ideas.
I love being able to wander around the Plaza on a spring day and enjoying the fountains and architecture.
I even love KC weather.
[–]doctorbeat 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Daahhh you had me till the weather! The only month I loathe for weather is February. By that time, I'm just ready for spring! That's a pretty minor complaint though.
[–]Ninjakitty07 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I'll grant you that by mid-February, walking from one end of campus to the far end of the back parking lot is not exactly my favorite activity. It does mean that when I get home, I can get the fireplace roaring, make some hot tea, and curl up with a fuzzy blanket, so I give it a pass.
[–]snapmouse 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
After living in places like Phoenix and San Diego, I fully appreciate how bad the Royals are. This is the only place in the country that I can watch a major league baseball game for $10 and sit right on the rail when 80% of the fans don't show up.
[–]benso87 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
It's great this season because the tickets are still cheap, but the team has been pretty fun to watch.
[–]scr0llwheel 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Hey now, don't give the Padres too much credit! They're shit, too.
[–]acepiloto 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Exactly, I love the fact that I buy cheap seats and never even see them.
[–]AJRiddle 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Just want to point out that attendance at Kauffman Stadium really isn't that bad, it hardly is ever 80% empty. Last year Kansas City ranked 23rd of 30 in attendance percentage (attendance/capacity). Arizona was ranked 26th.
[–]snapmouse 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Probably true, but when I lived in Phx, I couldn't get a $5 ticket and sit on the right field rail by the 3rd inning. Sometimes it just FEELS like it's 80% empty. Which is very, very cool.

That blue team invites one in, occasionally, to scrimmage. Once in a while they'll win. It's almost like a globetrotters game where the opposing team doesn't starting playing hard until the last inning. The Blue guys fans cheer loud and hard but usually lose in the end. Still fun to watch... like the globetrotters... which one is curly?
[–]strehlowism 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
The restaurants. Even beyond the bbq...our city has killer places to eat.
[–]tanmaker 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Sports. As bad as the Royals and Chiefs have been in previous years, they are getting better and it is a blast to go out to the games. The Big 12 Tournament and NCAA Tournament come to town and play at the Sprint Center, which is a blast. I hear the roller derby team is pretty awesome to watch too.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
you forgot the wiz i mean wizards I mean sporting Kc.....
[–]Phrost 0 points1 point2 points 11 months ago
And the Briga... I mean COMMAND.
[–]brawl 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Clean air. Big enough to facilitate my needs, small enough for obscurity.
The people here are a good blend of decency.
We surprisingly have a really good hip-hop scene, and some of the craziest people I've ever met.
People watching from the Buzzard Beach patio...I love it all. KC is my favorite place.
[–]papertiger80 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I can't believe I forget about Buzzard. Chilling on the patio during the summer watching drunks stumble down the street never gets old.
[–]brawl 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
especially if you are one of those drunks, watching the other drunks.
Se fantisque!
[–]TheDoubtfulGuest 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Agh I just recently turned 21 and have been enjoying the holy fuck out of buzzard :)

I love that we get LEGO LAND and an AQUARIUM!!! I love the new Livestrong Park and the growing love for Soccer!
[–]heartfart 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Wait Lego land? Aquarium? Where are these things?
[–]tacitus 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Lego Land and the Aquarium are both going in at crown center. This will compliment the train restaurant, Crayola restaurant / store, coterie theater, Kaleidoscope, and the entertainment pavilion quite nicely. Together with the nearby national WW1 memorial and museum, union station, and the money museum.. this is really becoming a regional landmark.
This will be awesome.
[–]chubert 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Not quite Legoland, which is a big outdoor amusement park with roller coasters and other rides, kinda like Worlds of Fun. Crown Center is getting a Lego Discovery Center, which is scaled down, indoor version of Legoland and has an educational spin. It will have models and classes on building, a movie theater, and some smaller attractions like a kids' play area.
[–]B_Alexander13 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Soon to be at Crown Center
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago*
CROWN CENTER! It was in the paper earlier this week. I will see if I can find the link! They are coming this summer.
[–]tacitus 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I've never really gotten over the physical placement of the soccer stadium. It seems so irresponsible to plop a development like that near an outlet mall in nearly rural Wyandotte county (are there even a thousand people within 2 miles?). There was already so much unused space close to downtown KCK (among other places in the metro).
And it does sort of send a signal about what sort of people are welcome when it was placed so far west and so well removed from the public bus lines.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I know that they were placing it at Bannister and 435 but the tax stuff fell through. That area of Wyandotte has grown a lot and that area could use the tax money for schools and public services. Wish I was control I would have put it right by my house!
[–]davhaney 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
As long as they were "plopping" stadiums in eastern Kansas, Lawrence would have been a better choice for this. There's actually bus that goes there (the k-10 one), and the demographics favor it. A day trip with the kids to Lawrence to see a game would be a much better sell than driving out to the outlet malls in WyCo.
[–]AJRiddle 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
There is no way that a "day trip to lawrence with the kids" is ever going to happen to anyone from Jackson, Clay, or Platte County, let alone Johnson or Wyandotte. Lawrence is just much too far for the bulk of the KC Metro area to go for a soccer game, and there isn't much to do there that you can't do in Kansas City that warrants a day trip.
[–]Allurex -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
They're really trying to bolster the soccer thing over west of JoCo. There's plans to put a big soccer complex at WyCo park out by the Ag Hall of Fame and such too.
[–]crlove -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago*
Irresponsible for who exactly?
Also, there's a bus line that runs right passed the stadium.
Think it's funny that "outlet mall" has this seedy connotation, although the Legends wasn't even an outlet mall until last year, and most of the stores aren't "outlets". I agree that it was a poor decision on their part to got that direction with their naming, but it is what it is.
[–]tacitus 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Is this a troll? Leapfrog greenfield developments are irresponsible for everyone, except for short term real-estate developers and even shorter term construction interests.
[–]crlove 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
So you're saying the area in western Wyandotte isn't a success? Or that it's just not a success in the location where you want it?
Are you afraid there are only so many good things to go around? I'm not sure what your issue is here.
None of the above - my main complaint is irresponsible land use.
Since you asked my opinion: Time will tell if soccer is a success. Thinking carefully, I presume it will be due to deep commitments from kansas politicians and some corporate sponsors together with increasing interest in soccer. It may even extend the typical/anticipated life of the outlet mall, but that can ultimately go either way. Modern developers are pretty bad about planning for a 20-year life-time.
Part of my complaint (as a Kansas taxpayer!) is that there was a phenomenal amount of government support behind the whole development. As such, why not put it in downtown KCK where it's effects would be multiplied and would spawn much-needed economic recovery. Or in lawrence where it could have supported itself without government involvement. Instead, it's next door to the agricultural hall of fame.
On an unrelated note: I was also pretty surprised that cerner was putting offices out there. I know at least 3 people that will probably leave the company if they're relocated there (it would be an hour drive for two of them, and the other uses public transit).
I do see your points about land use. Although you might keep in mind that what really drew business out there was the placement of the Kansas Speedway, not the Ag Hall of Fame ;) And it's hard to argue with the money-making & crowd-drawing ability of NASCAR (although I'm happy to argue about whether it's actually a sport).
I can't imagine there was a way to get a NASCAR track into downtown KCK.
That said, the Legends will have paid off it's debt by 2013, well ahead of schedule. Same can't be said about P&L, for example, which is continuing to ask for MORE money. (Trying to find the story I read about this...)
I wouldn't worry about KCK too much. I think this Google thing is going to do more good for the area than we can imagine. The sheer number of companies that will move in simply to house their data on high speed will probably bring more money flooding in than soccer ever will. Not to mention other business...
(And I'm speaking as a KS taxpayer, too)
I went to the Ag Hall of fame with my grandfather almost 20 years ago... it was great - he was so enthused to look at the old equipment, and describe how it was used when he was growing up. It's amazing how labor intensive it was (compared to modern herbicides, tractors, combines, etc). I would recommend you check it out -- if you have any ties to agriculture.
The complexity of the STAR bonds and the backdoor extensions which were used to finance the soccer stadium make Enron's financials look straightforward. Let me give it a shot: Yes, they're paying the part of the debt associated with original "Village West" ahead of time -- to be completed in 2014. However the bond portion that was paid back has been re-used for the soccer project. This means the $40m per year that "Village West" (now tactfully called Legends Outlets) was supposed to generate in net positive sales tax revenues to Kansas' general fund has been re-directed back to paying the recycled STAR bonds for the soccer stadium. Thus, comparing previous projections to actuals shows $40m per year tax revenue loss due to soccer -- but obviously no outright payments from the general fund.
Yes P&L is losing money. But doing brownfield work is always more expensive up front than the greenfield ones I despise so much. Yes, KC really should have had Cordish assume more risk in the project, too. In any event, the two projects seem similar on the surface, but with inspection are quite different. P&L had a great deal of infrastructure upgrade associated with it (new sewer, knock down buildings, refurbished hotels, built parking garages, etc) - much of which would have had to be done sometime anyway. By contrast for the raceway they didn't even need surface parking lots.. people simply park on the grass. Also, without the investment that P&L represents, we'd never have seen NCAA and several conventions. Even though the place seems sorta kitchy, it's probably worth it all in the long run. But I guess I'm contributing to it's financial problems: I never go to P&L!
It's funny too... you don't hear about it so much, but so many of these anchored retail projects are just not doing well. Independence is losing north of $4m per year (paying out of the general fund, on top of planned subsidies) for the Bass Pro shop they put up recently. Overland Park is losing north of $2m per year on it's convention center hotel (again, paying out of the general fund, on top of planned subsidies). The Bass Pro project in Olathe isn't doing well, either.. and the "great mall" isn't so great. For the suburbs, losses like these are a much bigger slice of the revenue pie, too.
And yea, I do worry about KCK all the same.
[–]crlove 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I bow to your experience and knowledge sir.
[–]papertiger80 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I will not be going anywhere near Legends if there ever happens to be a race, soccer game, and t-bones game all on the same day. I know the chances are slim to none but that is not a gamble I am willing to bet on.
I can't remember if it was The Pitch, Ink, or the KC Star that had the article talking about the massive money black hole known as PnL and how it is requesting more money from tax payers to keep it afloat.
[–]Phrost 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Was supposed to be in Lee's Summit but your city council is staffed by idiots.
No it wasn't. The whole plan was supposed to be Cerner offices and Wizards stadium at Bannister and 435, but Kansas City fucked it up and KCK swooped in.
[–]Ninjakitty07 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
It would have been so nice to have that wasted swath of crumbling parking lot turned into something useful too.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It was supposed to be at Bannister at the old mall right off of 435 But that didn't happen.
I'm pretty sure at one point it was supposed to be in LS, right where another stupid shopping center just went in recently (by Unity Village).
[–]moodswung 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago

[–]IntercostalClavical 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
The Crossroads district on First Friday's. Love the atmosphere, the people, walking around seeing cool art. That area of town was dead for years and it's making a great comeback.

Seriously though, I knew any mention of BBQ would spark a conversation. There's just so many good options that I'm not sure how anybody has a clear-cut favorite. I love every place mentioned already, plus LC's ribs, Rosedale, Wood Yard and even the BBQ trailer at McGonigle's.
This is true. Ask 10 people what their favorite BBQ place is and you could get 10 different answers. Which is awesome because I like the diversity and availability of options.
[–]Phrost -1 points0 points1 point 11 months ago
I'm just confused as to why I got downvoted to a -4 over my choice in BBQ joints.
Seriously /r/kansascity?
[–]scr0llwheel 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Never heard of this place but I'll have to try it now!
[–]Phrost 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
It's a BBQ/Tex Mex place on 135th in Leawood/OP. They make enchiladas with brisket, but their best items are the corn pudding, and the "Dad's Enchiladas" in chicken.
The latter isn't on the menu anymore, but if you ask for it, they can make it.
I think they still have Dr. Pepper Ribs on the menu, which are exactly what they sound like; ribs marinaded in Dr. Pepper.
[–]bambooshootz 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
While Will Jenny's is not a bad restaurant it does not come close to comparing to the deliciousness of Oklahoma Joe's. People don't line up out the door every weekend at Will Jenny's. Oklahoma Joe's is just ridiculously good.
you misspelled "Quicks"
[–]jordan0day -9 points-8 points-7 points 1 year ago
Downvote because bbq bickering is dumb.
Pffft, what else is there to pointlessly argue about besides our world-class BBQ?!

I love Waldo Pizza, the Flying Saucer, the fact we are already halfway to anywhere in the US, and Kansas Coffee Company. I also enjoy Kansas thunderstorms in the summer and long walks along the shores of Clinton Lake.
[–]demechman 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Surprised no one mentioned the Google Fiber Project.

Brookside
[–]KinnerMode[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I grew up at 68th and Wornall, and can tell you that although Brookside is still one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in KC, it has changed quite a bit over the years. Really got to be a hot spot in town in the late 90's and early 00's, and lots of folks from the suburbs moved in. Now, there are a few too many Lexus SUVs around, and I find West Plaza, Midtown and Waldo (especially the southern section) to be much more vibrant and diverse.
[–]Esquire99 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
My family and friends are there.
[–]Goodmournin 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I love that it's large enough to get that 'big city' feel, but small enough to where you actually know your next door neighbors. And I also love the reaction people have when they're new to the town. You know, the 'Oh, so it isn't just all farmland and cows.' look.
[–]gorillahead 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Maybe a little late to put in what i love about kc and I realize more now that ive been down at college but heres my list Loose park, BBQ, Rugby (kc has a great growing scene for the sport i love and people know little about it), The people i love being able to walk around town or on the brookside path and be able to say hi to someone and they will actually talk with you, the vast majority of things to do really if you are having trouble finding something in kc you just aren't looking hard enough I love KC and can not wait tell i graduate and get a house here
[–]gioraffe32 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The Plaza. I just post up at Starbucks on the patio, trying to look all shnazzy. And, surprisingly, the skyline that rises out from amongst the trees (view from I-70 WB by that tall bridge after the stadiums). I lived in Chicago for a couple years so you'd think that I'm all about the Chicago skyline. And I am. It's just ours is more..."green" for lack of a better word.

[–]Nobodyreallycares 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
Don't worry about the downvotes, man. It happens to me (or anybody else for that matter) too whenever I bring up OP. There are a lot of angsty college kid urban-hipsters in this sub who's conditioned response is to downvote any positive comment about the "suburbs."
[–]flaffl 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I actually live in Lee's Summit, but hey, it's where I grew up.
but seriously though, i take pride that i'm from a rich area. i take pride in the fact that my parents worked their asses off after coming overseas without learning a lick of Engrish. Not all of us are pompous little pricks.
[–]KinnerMode[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Nope.
[–]Timmmah 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Slightly OT, but I've never been to the peanut. I am currently craving some wings so I figured I would go tonight. I pulled up their menu, but 16.25 for a dozen wings?! I can get 2x that much at BWW.
[–]echelon47 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
One wing is a full wing, all three parts. So six wings is the same as 12 you'd get anywhere else. They are pretty good. That being said, I hate the service there, and won't ever go in when there are more than 5-6 tables sat. Otherwise you'll wait an hour for food and the bartender/waitress will be about the shittiest you've ever had.
[–]damnitkage 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
agreed on the service. worst service ever. and it wasn't even for me. was there and a guy had ordered food and had the audacity to ask the bartender where it was, after a half hour or so. the bartender basically told him to fuck off and get out.
[–]wozster 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Correct! I can eat a dozen wings most places by myself, but a dozen from the Peanut will easily feed three adults (especially if you have some other sides like fries or side salad).
[–]BaileyCat1986 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Are we discussing the Peanut over in Lee Summit or the one located on 75th street and Metcalf?
Not sure of the service since I still haven't been there, but all the prices were close to each other when I looked them up.
[–]KinnerMode[S] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I don't think there's a Peanut on 75th and Metcalf. Only ones I know of are Downtown, Midtown on Main, Lee's Summit and 127th St. in OP.
