Part of me hopes they are secretly working on a sequel. Part of me is terrified of what that sequel will look like after years of The Sims and Spore.

It'll look like a soundtrack?! How the hell do I build a city with music?

Oh wow, you really need more upvotes good sir. I'm confused though, weren't they called Jefferson Starship?

Exchange Sim City with HL2ep3, and The Sims and Spore with Portal and Left 4 dead, respectively ofcourse.

And you have every Valve fans worst nightmare.

(That includes me btw)

The Sims 3 was worlds better than the first two, at least.

Sim City 4 came out during the original run of the Sims. I don't know why you believe that Sim City's quality is somehow effected by the most popular franchise in PC gaming...

Besides, Will Wright doesn't work for EA or Maxis anymore, so a new Sim City would be entirely different from the originals, much like Societies.

Will Wright left EA and Maxis after the release of Spore and isn't really doing a lot lately.

The only thing I can find that he's recently affiliated with is the Stupid Fun Club.

I had to let it go. I lost a good chunk of my life to SimCity 4. It's not a good thing to get into if you have symptoms of OCD. It stopped becoming a game (which is never really was to begin with) and just an outlet for obsessive compulsive tendencies. The problem is that the game is never over. It's simply a creative thing with no reward or closure. It's pointless.

The version of Sim City 2k that I got came with a whole pack of default cities. One of them was just like 200 launch arcos lined up on one side of the map, with a couple police and fire stations here and there. All along one edge of the arcology cluster were a bunch of fusion plants. Maybe you were using this map?

[–]archlich 0 points1 point ago

Nope, I built the city from scratch. I'd let it run over night so I would get more cash the next day.

Speaking of cities that came with the game, I live in Lincoln, Nebraska. There was a fairly accurate replica of Lincoln that came with the game, and when I was eight years old I thought it was awesome. I thought that the game somehow made a model of the city you lived in, or maybe there were a bunch of different versions of the game, one for every major city in the US.

sim city 2000 was unbelievably good. i picked up sim city 4 a few years ago and couldn't get into it like 2k.

we need a new 2k.

Spoilering the fact that all your launch arcologies blast off into space is like getting all giddy about revealing how Bruce Willis was dead all along in The Sixth Sense or that Rosebud was C. Foster Kane's sled.

I have the same issue. But 7 years, hundreds of flexible mods, and 1.5 degrees in Urban Planning later, I'm still charging through it. :D SimCity set my life track.

I'd be happy to see an updated Simcity 4, really.

  1. Autosave.
  2. Smarter zone parceling, smarter traffic pathing
  3. Capacity tweaks, bug fixes (opera house, job capacity, less crashing)
  4. More high-capacity buildings - water sanitation, bus stops, recycling centers, etc.
  5. Optimization: If I build a huge city, my computer lags. Game is from early 2003. My hardware is from late 2009.

I really think that they did SC4 right. It just needed more of what it already had, and polished better. If there could be just one extra feature I'd want, it'd be more mass transit controls - adding more trains to a line, expanding existing stations, earning higher-capcity/high-speed trains, etc.

Much higher capacities but with placement limits would be welcome, too; At "endgame", I keep on getting pushed into having a subway station on every other block to address traffic problems. Using hub-spoke with the subway and bus stops doesn't work well because the subway hits overcapacity 2-3 stops in, so it ends up being subways all the way down. (And NAM doesn't work for me in modifying capacities for some weird reason…)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The traffic pathing can be fixed with the Network Addon Mod (NAM). There's a lot of mods that make the game more playable.. like diagonal streets.

[–]idarkiswordi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah same here. I hope they introduce the ability to walk around the city and drive the cars GTA3/4 style rather than that SC4 tacked on bit. I want to be able to build a good sized rural town and then burn it down in a rampage with a flamethrower and a hummer.

Yeah only newer and with the ability to walk around and kill sims citizens. Even better is if you could integrate your girlfriends Sims neighborhood, knock on their doors and when they answer, gun them down.

Streets of Sim City was fun but really lacking in my opinion. One of those games that was ahead of its time in concept and underachieved in execution largely due to graphical problems and staleness of gameplay. Now that I think about it, with the exception to the guns and ability to load Sim City 2 maps, Burnout Paradise is actually somewhat a spiritual sequel. Hmm...

Importing maps into SimCopter was the best.

[–]bitbot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I hope they don't. SimCity is about building and managing a city, not walking around in it, so they shouldn't waste their time on that.

I'd love to see SimCity 5 incorporate online play kind of like spore, being able to connect your cities to other people cities- creating a massive online city network.

Cities XL 2011 looks promising. They're improving a lot over the original. More building variety, and transit options. I hope it pans out, but it doesn't release until October. It seems like they're the only ones even trying to bring about a true city-builder anymore.

I am out of games. I use to play SC3 all the time. I have not touched SC4 is it good? What mods do you suggest? Is there a guide?

[–]bavarian_creme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is good, I just reinstalled for the 3rd time. Not perfect, but good. I recommend getting the official Addon "Rush Hour" and the mod called "Network Addon Mod" (both mandatory IMHO). Additionally you might want to get those bus stops that can be placed on streets.

All easy to find with Google.

There millions of other mods though (like the SPEX), i just never had the time to try more of them. Maybe other people can help here.

Simcity 4 actually has a pretty awesome mod community(Click on the LEX and create an account), with mods for realistic seaports, a more realistic traffic simulator, tunnel-makers, and generally a lot of shit that makes your city really have character. Unfortunately installing them is neither fast nor intuitive. It's worth it, though.

Any word on how this http://www2.citiesxl.com/ is now that the stupid MMOCBG functions were neutered?

Oh and apparently a sequel is coming out, I wonder what it could be if they didn't spend a year working on the stupid planet offer and just focused 100% on city building. I really just want a good city planner/traffic planner game, I love creating efficient road structures. I really just want sim city with curved roads and better graphics.

Simcity Socities wasn't really a 'Simcity' game, it was to SimCity what MySims is to The Sims. It's all about personalization and self-expression, not simulation. .;;

I don't think they're working on a new SimCity though, which is kind of sad. There are some other city simulators out there but I don't know if any of them are really good, or the good ones aren't really like SimCity. I love Tropico 3 but it's NOTHING like SimCity.

[–]JustZack -1 points0 points ago

Try Cities XL. It's not by the same people who made SimCity, but's its a more modern version and almost as good.

[–]NOACeulemans 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No Zack. CitiesXL doesn't remotely compare to SC4 with all it's modded goodness.

It doesn't even have trains, ffs.

[–]Mmortalone 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My opinion on Cites XL is that it was a good first try. They're trying again with Cities XL 2011.

Jesus, at least they tried something new and had the balls to stick with it when it didn't work out.

[–]NOACeulemans 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree on both counts; it was a good try to move the game type along. It's also nice it wasn't just a project and it actually came to fruition, and that they had the balls to stick with it until Monte Cristo went bankrupt.

It just doesn't compare to SimCity 4 on many levels.

[–]hosndosn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tried it, didn't gave me the same feel. It's quite a detailed simulation but you feel like you have less to actually do.
