I dislike Apple more and more each day. Is there a good alternative to an iPod? (self.gadgets)
submitted 1 year ago by SamuraiSevens
[–]rpowers 66 points67 points68 points 1 year ago
I like my cheapass Sansa Fuze, I got a refurb for 50 bucks, 8 gb, has a microSD, plays flac/ogg/oh yeah mp3. Fuck Apple... what a bunch of horseshit selling a device that doesn't work to its' capability.
[–]Novacula 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Great little player.
I got the 4 gb refurb off Woot! for 30 bucks, got a 8 gb micro sd off amazon for 17 bucks. ~50 bucks for a 12 gb player... not bad at all.
It has this converter that shrinks avi... I watch vids at the gym, doing treadmill/bike etc... GREAT alternative to the ipod.
[–]marthirial 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago
This man speaks the truth. I have a cheap ass Sansa Clip. 4GB mem. Sounds great and I can clip it to my coat's cuff and run the wire under the sleeve into my ears. Full control without having to look at it.
And if the shit breaks, gets lost or looks all scuff, just get a new one for $35.
[–]hans1193 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
Truth. Sansa clip is amazing, and supports drag and drop
[–]Anthaneezy 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
don't forget the built in FM tuner. :)
[–]zzybert 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
The Sansa Clip+ (Clip Plus) is even better since it has a Micro SDHC card slot so it's expandable. I have one of these and a Sansa Fuze, both expanded with SDHC cards, and they're both great little machines.
[–]bamfb2 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
Massive, massive upvote for this dude! (still only counts as one vote unfortunately.......but I did press the mouse button very aggressively)
Although, I got my 8gb black Sansa Fuze for the same price new. Maybe you got yours a while ago.
Plug and play right out of the box. Windows folder manipulation. No bullshit sync crap. No lock downs. Built more solidly than ipods. Not fancy, just functional.
Memory..sweet, sweet memory!! I got a 16gb microsd for 20 bucks at a closing down sale. So for 20gb ipod equivalent (actually superior), I paid $70. And I've got removable storage....and I can transfer back and forth to the player from any machine. AND...I can upgrade storage any time I want --> planning on getting a 32gb microsd. So I'll have a 40gb mp3 player, with 16gb extra storage on the side.
Suck it apple lovers.
[–]lolinyerface 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I too pressed the mouse button aggressively...following your example. I need a new Logitech mouse now.... :(
[–]bamfb2 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Ahh yes, I should have put a disclaimer on that one. There is a sweet spot between an acknowledged high level of aggression and the breaking point of your particular mouse. I should have posted a comparison chart. Too little too late. My apologies.
[–]rboymtj 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I'm totally with you on my love for the Sansa players. I listen to a ton of audiobooks and the Sansa Clip is absolutely perfect. Small, expandable, cheap, looks like a drive to my PC and I can listen to the radio at the gym.
[–]AxisOfAwesome 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago*
I couldn't agree more. I love my Fuze. Love the way its memory is expandable, love the radio (I listen to NPR on it almost as much as I listen to my MP3s), love the wide support for formats, love how it's just mounted by linux as an external drive and I can just drag and drop stuff. It never has problems with tags or filenames, was cheap as hell, and I don't regret my purchase at all.
[–]cornucopia 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
This needs more upvotes, the sansa fuze and the clip+ (if you just want music) are awesome. Great sound, well made and cheap.
[–]G-Zom 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
FUCK YES!! I love my Sansa Fuze. I recommend one x10000000.
[–]Shiggityx2 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Sansa e270 and e250 (6gb and 2gb) here. With rockbox and a microsd slot it is a great alternative if you don't need video.
[–]lobstah4 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Yes. My nine-year-old has a 4GB clip and I swipe it from him when I don't want to 'lug around' my beloved Toshiba Gigabeat 30S. Great interface, and I love that there are separate windows for Books and Podcasts, not just all lumped in with 'Music'.
I also plugged the Clip into my (70-year-old) dad's new Mercury MKz's USB part and blew him away with the voice control features and playback quality... it really is quite cool.
[–]OneSalientOversight 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I bought one of those a couple of months ago based upon the recommendations here at Reddit. Rhythmbox too. Very good.
And I'm waiting for 32mb MicroSD cards to come out which means I can store my entire CD collection on it.
[–]switchmotiv 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
And you can get a whole kit for it, for like $10 on Amazon.
[–]clicksnd 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Did you buy it on Woot!?
[–]rpowers 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Sure did, actually I had a 4gb one before that though... just grabbed it as an upgrade/extra because it was cheap.
[–]randatola 12 points13 points14 points 1 year ago
If I had to replace my mp3 player right now, and I didn't feel like doing any research, I would just buy a used Sandisk Sansa e200 series off of Ebay and install Rockbox.
[–]Ashex 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I used to have an e260 but it was stolen out of my car. My ex bought me the 5th gen Nano the week it came out and even had it engraved for me. I still wish I had an e260.
[–]JohnWH 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I would want my previous mp3 player if my ex had my new one engraved..... that would make me sad each day, even if I was the one to initiate the break up.
[–]Ashex 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It didn't have anything that personal on it, just my name and a quote about karma. The nano is great but iTunes sucks and playlist management is terrible/non-existent.
[–]Sanit 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Upvoted for Rockbox.
[–]gfxlonghorn 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I have really nice headphones, so rockbox is a must. It's funny I spent like 10x as much as on my headphones than I did on my crappy sansa.
[–]raffraffraff 34 points35 points36 points 1 year ago
The day I started using my phone to play music, I had one less brick to carry (...forget, lose) and automatic muting of music when the phone rang. Get a good Android phone and one of those clip-on mics with a headphone socket and you're all set. It'll even scrobble to LastFM or stream music if you've got flat rate mobile broadband. Why buy a device that does just one thing?
[–]ahal89 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
Why buy a device that does just one thing?
Because I want to be able to put all of my music on it without having to worry about switching songs in or out. When they come out with an affordable 120gb+ smart phone, then I'll consider it.
Even then music is much more important to me than browsing/phone functions. I'd rather have a device that is built specifically for music and does it really well, than a device where music is more like an afterthought.
[–]kimad 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
This, and also two devices = twice the battery life. Seriously, the battery on my phone sucks enough as it is without me playing music off it the whole time it's standing by.
[–]trysexual 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
This is it for me too. 32gb iphone with 1 day battery life does not replace 160gb Ipod with at least a week (my type of use) and 130gb of music.
If Apple sort out the battery life on the iphone then I'll have to look again.
[–]thedailynathan 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Re the battery life problem, I'm pretty sure carrying an extra battery (or even two) would still be smaller than multiple devices.
Oh, and with cell phones you actually can have removable batteries =P
[–]biotech9 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Why bring it with you? http://www.lookatbowen.com/2010/01/step-away-from-the-n900
[–]beedogs 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I used to think this way, until I realized I can still load a month's worth of music onto my phone. Do you really need to carry around 160GB of music with you everywhere? I found I didn't. My phone can hold about 40GB by itself.
Also, as an added bonus, I find I'm listening to a lot more music than I used to, because I carry my phone with me everywhere. I never used to take my iPod with me all the time. Almost never, in fact.
[–]ahal89 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It's not that I need all of it at once, it's that I don't want to worry about which songs I should keep and which ones I shouldn't.
[–]lroselg 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I think that lala.com has the ability to upload your music and stream anything from your collection. Problem solved?
[–]mattgif 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Do you have any more info on this? I poked around the site and couldn't find a way to upload. I would be willing to pay a (small) monthly fee for a service that would host my 65gb collection and let me stream it.
One of my machines at home is set up as a media server, but it's flaky thanks to my craptastic monopolized internet.
[–]lroselg 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Check out lala music mover. It allows you to upload your music and then stream it on lala. It is free.
Ah, thanks! (Link for those interested)
No good on my linux box, but good to know it's out there. FYI, the site says:
Note: Due to technical issues, we have discontinued file uploading via the Music Mover (songs matched to the Lala catalog by Music Mover will not be affected and will continue to be added to your Lala collection). We are exploring options to re-enable this functionality. In the meantime, you can use Manual Uploading to add songs not matched to the Lala catalog to your collection. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Yeah I noticed that too. What is seems to do is look through any folder where you have music and match with their library, it will add any available songs on your computer to your lala collection. I have thousands of songs in my lala collection now. I just need to rip all of my cds, I have been collecting cds since the early 90s and have so many that have not been added to my itunes or ipod.
[–]raffraffraff 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Our use cases differ. The ability to touch a button clipped to my collar and have the music fade and take a phonecall is much more important to me than having ALL of my music with me ALL of the time. My phone has 32gb, which is plenty for the week. Anyway, your definition of 'doing one thing well' doesn't include my top two functions for a portable music player: LastFM and the aforementioned phone integration.
[–]greeed 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It should be sometime this year. SDXC The article on MicroSD speaks to the translation of this technology to the MicroSD form factor, so this year, maybe next we should have MicroSD chips in the 1tb range! I think that will satisfy your needs.
[–]shniken 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
This was my idea ages ago. Why is there no phone that has a hard drive in it?
Also, if you are going to only have 4-8 GB of storage as a music player. FFS let me drag and drop my music onto it. AND let me play Ogg vorbis!
[–]CC440 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Stream it from your home computer. TB is storage instead of 160gb max.
[–]rednightmare 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Same reason I still have an MP3 player. I want to shuffle my entire collection! That said, I have now switched to serving my tunes out from my home and grabbing them with my iphone. Sure I need to have wifi or else it gets pricey (Yay Canada) but it works like a charm. I'm sure you could set it up with most other smartphones as well.
[–]Lokonopa 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I have Pandora, GrooveShark, and several other FM and internet radios available to me on my phone. It's absolutely ridiculous how much I used to rely on my iPod Classic 30GB Gen5.5 with RockBox/iPodLinux installed and now only carry around my phone.
[–]takeda64 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I personally use bluetooth AD2P, I find it better since there are no more wires.
[–]Peebs 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago
Check out anythingbutipod.com. They turned me onto the Samsung P3, and I love it.

I remember at launch it seemed like all the apps and web browsing was considerably slower then on the ipod touch, Have they fixed this? This is the only reason i haven't been considering it. I love the hardware.
[–]ddelrio 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Browsing has been greatly improved since launch. I hadn't heard that apps ran slower. They should run faster considering the Tegra processor. I certainly haven't seen any slow running apps.
Obviously, you don't have access to a large library of application as you do with the iPod. That's one of the things I don't like about it. However, the interface is incredibly sleek, the display looks amazing, and it's very responsive. Also, the Zune software that runs on your PC (and only PC I'm afraid), is leaps and bounds better than iTunes--although you don't get access to as much music from the Zune Marketplace.
Another cool thing is that, if you're a developer, you can write apps for you Zune at no additional cost. Unfortunately, they still haven't opened up access to the 3D capabilities of the Zune HD--but touch, accelerometer, etc. is there. It's possible they'll open things up a bit more when the new WinMo 7 phones are released.
My wife has an iPod Touch (newest model), and I wouldn't want to trade with her.
[–]katui 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Cool, thanks for the info. What i meant with the app is that they stared up slowly at launch. As in 10+ seconds to start up the calculator. Has this been addressed?
[–]ddelrio 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Ah, yes--as in, yes, I understand what you mean. Unfortunately, it has not been addressed. I am not certain of the reason for the startup time. It's possible that system resources are loading or resources are unloading to focus more resources on the application or to load as much of the application in memory--but that's just speculation. I suppose it could be annoying--but it's never really bothered me much. I noticed there's a pause before startup on the apps I write as well.
[–]katui 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Mk, thanks.. Ill have to play with it someday. Iv been trying to decide between a Zune HD and a Archos 5 Internet Tablet.
[–]cisasteelersfan 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
My thoughts exactly. I do a lot of web surfing on the iTouch, and it's pretty good, but I don't know how the Zune HD is on the internet.
[–]piratelax40 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
its great, I did a side by side with my brothers ipod touch and rendering was equally as snappy on both. If anything I think the zune hd has smoother and crisper text and zooming
Snagged my buddies for about 20 minutes. I am shocked to hear that browsing is slow, as that was the FIRST thing I noticed being quicker than the Itouch. Also the zoom and drag in the browser window doesn't have that annoying delay the Itouch has.
[–]donnie0darko0 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
THERE'S NO SUCH FUCKING THING AS AN ITOUCH. IT'S A GODDAMN IPOD TOUCH. Ok. Just had to get that off my chest. Go about your business! Have a nice day! :D
[–]lolinyerface 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I'll quote myself from an earlier thread where I say this.
It's been a few years, you can give it up. People are going to call it an Itouch if they want and continue on perfectly happy with their lives. Oh! I see you have an RSS update from AppleBlog #4932144. Might wanna take that, I hear Stevie J had a wild ride on the porcelain you need to read about. :)
Have a nice night!
[–]mdrennen 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Remove the hype and marketing by Apple and the Zune HD is a better product
[–]coheedcollapse 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I still have my 30 gig Zune from back when they first came out. I've been using it MUCH longer than I had ever been able to use any of my iPods. I've owned two of them (in one the hard drive went bad and in the other the battery - keep in mind that I'm obsessive about the safety of my electronics.), my sister has gone through one (she is an idiot with electronics, so that might be her fault), and my wife has gone through one (battery issues). Obviously anecdotal evidence, but important enough for me to warrant the switch.
I like the Zune software FAR better as well (although that might be due to the fact that I'm running Windows and iTunes is the worst piece of shit ever on Windows). I don't have an opinion or info on the Zune HD since I'm still using my original, but you can bet the second my original goes out I'm going to be picking up an HD.
[–]ddelrio 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Really? Compared to iTunes? Maybe it's just iTunes on Windows--but, personally, I can't stand it. It's slow, bloated, and a resource hog. The Zune software seems incredibly sleek and modern in comparison. I have a friend with an iPod Touch as well as an iPhone--and he's using the Zune software as his primary music app (for everything but iPod sync, obviously).
[–]SmartAssX 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Yep i love my zune software... i acutely use it to listen to music on too.
[–]Unsmith 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Have you updated the software side of things, they've made it MUCH better in the past six months or so.
I really like the software. Not that it's the absolute best, but it's still much better than a lot of the alternatives. It's clean, it does what I want, and it's reasonably fast. It would be nice if they'd open up their sync system to work with other programs though, so at least people who are dissatisfied could have an option.
I do hate the fact that they've changed the rating system to "love, neutral, hate" though. Not that it's a software thing as much as a systemwide change, but it sucks not having a star system.
[–]noroom 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I find the software to be pretty good. My girlfriend got a 4 Gb Zune and she was an avid Winamp user, but now she's switched because of how awesomely the software integrates with Windows 7.
[–]Mythrilfan 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I've understood that the consensus is that the Zune is better for music and media but the Touch is better for browsing and games. As you've used both, perhaps you care to explain the differences between the two? I've always teen the web browsing capability on a Touch as one of the main reasons to get one. Can you debunk this?
[–]satertek 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
One word: Audiosurf.
[–]Gemsi 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Microsoft really need to get around to bring the zune to europe, ending up buying a ipod classic because nothing better was around for the same price
[–]Unsmith 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
--And I prefer the subscription model over to paying for each song
This. Zune Pass is amazing
[–]kimad 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I would love to know why the Zune series hasn't been released outside of the US/Canada yet.
[–]emja 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
I found the zune to be a bit clunky. The iRiver though suits my needs very well.
[–]contrarian_barbarian 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
New zune or old zune? The old zunes were built like bricks, but the new ones are as compact as one would expect from an mp3 player.
I've got one of the old brick ones. I actually like it - I know of several people who have had ipods die on them (I had a Classic 80gb spontaneously die, replace it under warranty, then die again, just sitting on desks), but I'm pretty sure I could drop the zune on the ground, drive over it, and have it emerge unharmed.
Same thing happened to me. I've had a 30gb Zune since around launch and it still hasn't given up on me where two of my iPods had failed on me spontaneously even though I had taken the utmost care of them. My wife's also gave up on her and my sister and dad had one each fail on them.
Completely anecdotal, but it still turned me off to buying a new iPod.
[–]SmartAssX 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Ha i have dropped my plastic brick so many times i dont think i will ever let it go. Not to mention i use it when i work ... with hammers and the like.
[–]arrgh406 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
A friend of mine put his through the wash. Still Works.
I have owned every zune from the day it launched, totally worth it.
[–]breakneckridge 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago*
Remember, data is not the plural of anecdote. I have an iPod classic 80 gig that I've had for about 2.5 years, and it still works perfectly. I don't keep it any case, it's just the naked iPod, and I've dropped it many, many time from a height of several feet onto concrete and other similar solid surfaces. A bunch of my friends have iPods that are even older, 4 or 5 years old, and they're still working perfectly as well. Without hard data on the number of units that fail for iPods and Zunes, there's absolutely no way to say which one fails more often.
[–]Unsmith 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I love my clunky zune brick. It is built like a tank, has nice clicky buttons so that I can operate it without looking at it, and has excellent sound quality.
[–]HyperspaceHero 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Too bad it isn't Mac-compatible. I'm not saying that to be a dick, either. I think the Zune HD looks great, but it isn't even on my list of options.
[–]deve0530 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Install Windows 7 on your mac...
Installing an entire operating system purely so I can use an MP3 player seems a bit much to me.
[–]deve0530 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Well it is also the cool factor of having a Mac with Windows on it.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I have a Zune 120, but I'd so switch to an HD if they'd put a 120, or decent sized hard drive in it. I'm dying to get one, but my library is huge, and I want to be able to take it with me, since my music preference flips on a dime.
[–]HardwareLust 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
As soon as they put last.fm and Pandora on it, I am so there. That's the only thing holding it back.
[–]ReaverXai 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
How does the Podcast system work with the Zune HD? Can I add all of my podcasts from feeds? Or do I only get to add ones that people have submitted to the Zune store?
[–]Nerdmann 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
you can add them from feeds
[–]Poromenos 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Does the computer recognise it as a hard drive, or will it, too, not work with Linux?
[–]HungryHungryHobos 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I'm assuming not, without some modding. I have a couple of the classic Zunes and that's the situation with them. I don't know why they would protect the HD any differently.
[–]Poromenos 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
That sucks :/
[–]rahmad 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
my ipod alternative: my android.
[–]cibyr 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Even better, the N900 has 32GB of built-in storage and a microSD slot for a total of 48GB... take that, iPhone!
[–]finite 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
And Samsung recently announced 32GB microSD cards
[–]Culero 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Damn. I remember when I used to brag about the 2GB when they first came out. How time flies.
[–]Poromenos 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I found a 16GB on the street, yay!
[–]jsbell_69 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I remember when I had a 128mb MP3 player. I feel old, but I'm not.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
Yup, or any modern phone. A 16Gb microSD card is only £25
[–]gilgoomesh 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Doesn't have to be a phone. Archos make pretty good Android media players (WiFi but no phone contract)
Depends on the speed you want. Class 2 sell cheap as, but I like the speed Class 6 gives.
[–]Purp 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
if only the music interface wasn't complete shit
[–]Je12u 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I have never had an ipod or anything similar. I used my old HTC phone which ran windows mobile and played videos then I got a Tour which supports a 16gb card. I never saw the need for a separate device for my media needs. It's not like I'm on the road like a truck driver or anything. The gym, to/from work in my car, while waiting around for something...that's all I need it for. When am I ever gonna be like "aww fuck, I wish I had the rest of my 200gb of mp3s with me!" "The 1500 songs in my pocket just aren't gonna cut it."
[–]tomparker 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
My Motorola Droid is a touchy cantankerous unpredictable piece of shit that annoys me to no end even when compared to my Palm Treos (700 and 755) which in retrospect were very reliable.
[–]rahmad 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago*
that's too bad... i have a g1, rooted and running cyanogenmod + a few other modifications, and apart from the dismal battery life I'm really happy with the performance and functionality (given that it's an older generation)....
[–]FlyingBishop 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I find Google Navigation to be fairly described as a touchy cantankerous pieces of shit (though it's still superior to my $100 TomTom unit.)
But I've had it since December, and it's crashed maybe 4 times, and each time it rebooted and worked fine. It's certainly as stable as desktop Linux, Windows, or Mac.
[–]bxbomber 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Cowon s9, better audio quality and better screen.
Too bad not enough people have upvoted this. Such a great mp3 player. Best audio quality out there, great screen, accepts most formats (FLAC, Ogg, and all the usuals), no converting for video.
[–]SamuraiSevens[S] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Thanks for all the feedback. I'm looking to replace an iPod classic. The Zune HD looks nice, but I'm not sure if it has enough gigs
[–]Xfocus 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I came from 3 generations of iPods. They all died at or after the warranty period. It was strange and I got tired of having to buy a new iPod every ~1 year. I now have a zune 80 that was purchased back in December of 07 and it's still trucking. I have no idea what the screen or case is made of but it's completely scratch resistant. The thing looks just like the day I bought it. After using it with the zune software I look at my gf's nano/iTunes and am in disbelief that I was ok with using that before. If you do get a zune, look into a zune pass. All you can eat for $14.99. I hate DRM but I can live with this since I get to keep 10 songs a month. Essentially the cost of buying a CD every month.
[–]bigsquish 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I bought a Sony 16 GB walkman S545. It's not bad, proprietary cable :( limited formats that it can play, and they have to be in a VERY specific format. But the battery lasts forever. my .02
[–]thetickisblue 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
the walkman is a stealthy awesome player. i have a Sony walkman 4gb, not sure what model. great battery life, it plays more formats than most other players (AAC non-drm included). it's more reliable than my ipod touch which will sometimes skip when playing music.
I would continue to buy Sony Walkmans if it was not for the limited format issue. They make solid players, with astounding audio quality.
[–]FlyingBishop 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
My first portable mp3 player is the Motorola Droid sitting in my pocket. I highly recommend it.
Me too, except now I prefer streaming music.
[–]progrockusa 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
i just got myself a Cowon S9 16 gig. it's got tons of features and customization possibilities http://www.jetaudio.com/products/
[–]Leprecon 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago*
As an owner of that thing, DON'T BUY IT.
Seriously, it doesn't even support playlists. (at least with media monkey it doesn't) I have a Rammstein album with an umlaut in the title, and it shows up as two albums, the actual album name, and an unknown album. The tracks are divided over the two albums with no pattern. When I check on the S9, all the songs are in the same folder.
I was sick of apple and decided to switch to the Cowon s9. The next mp3 player I am buying will be one from Apple. My brother bought the same one, also to switch from apple to something else, and he doesn't even use his S9, and he still uses his ipod. (we bought them both at the same time)
[–]l00pee 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Bought one as well, just so I could use it with linux. It isnt a substitute for an Ipod. The thing basically crumbled with use.
You could not get playlists to work? They work fine for me when I used media monkey. As for the Rammstein album, media monkey has trouble with mp3 tags (they do not work on my other mp3 players either), get a simple mp3 tag program and you can get it to work.
The problem with Cowon players is that they are not for the average user. They do not come with a simple program to transfer music, and it expects that you know how to tweak and EQ. If you want an mp3 player that is simple to use, get an iPod. If you want a player you can customize in every which way, with fantastic format support, and amazing sound quality, go for the Cowon S9.
[–]guiscard 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I came in to recommend Cowon as well. I have a D2 and love the simplicity, codec support and 40 hour battery.
[–]aychberg 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
The D2 (now the D2+) has been the best pocket audio player for a better part of this last decade.
[–]fossuser 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
D2 is fantastic. Supports every format, works like a drive and 60 hour battery. The battery is really increible ill leave for weeks and when I come back it still lasts hours.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
D2 here as well... Man, that thing has a motherlode of battery life. 40 hours is no joke with this baby.
Also: it works like a standard mass storage device, so you can copy it all around, and share with other people as well. It plays practically anything on the audio-side, although it is a little picky when it comes to video, but hey, so is the iPod.
[–][deleted] 43 points44 points45 points 1 year ago
It's almost like the new generation is discovering what the older computer using generation already knew. Apple is a bunch of dipshits.
[–][deleted] 18 points19 points20 points 1 year ago
With great marketing.
[–]kimad 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Pervasive marketing, anyway.
[–]ophelia69 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Darn it, why didn't you guys warn us before we bought all those iPods?
[–]kaiise 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
we did.
[–]daemin 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
And its about fucking time, too. I'm tired of the blind Apple Adulation.
[–]symbha 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
It's funny that anytime someone likes an Apple product, it's blind Apple adulation. It always seems to me, it's actually blind Apple hatred.
I don't adulate Apple, but: my Macbook is nicer to use than my XP system. I won't likely go back to Windows for anything but games, especially once ultra edit comes around on Mac.
I have never found an mp3/music player that even comes close the ipod for either form factor, or usability and definitely not both. (Regardless of itunes music store or not, I don't use it.)
And for the iphone, so far it's the best available. I'd probably switch to an android phone (due to App Store policies) IF it has any kind of decent music player. (Which so far it doesn't.)
Nobody bitches about blind BMW or Benz adulation, just because they make a luxury brand product. Apple is really no different... I don't get where the religion comes from. You spend more, for better product and service... that's it.
I was primarily a windows user until 1.5 years ago, and despite my disagreement with their lock-in business practices, their products are (so far) superior enough for me to tolerate it.
Vote away...
[–]JohnWH 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Apple does not make a luxury brand computer in the same way BMW and Benz makes luxury cars. If BMW sold cars with the same specs as a Honda Civic, but with a nicer trim and at a much higher price, people would feel the the same about BMW adulation as they do about Apple adulation. When I think about Apple, I think about the difference between buying a Ford vs Mercury, same internals, better trim on the Mercury.
To go further with the car analogy, how much did you pay for your Macbook vs your XP system. In college, people constantly bought Macbook Pros once their Dell laptop slowed down. The difference is that the Dell cost $600 at the time, where the Mac cost at least $1,600 (typically closer to $2,000). If you compared it in car terms: That is the difference between getting a bottom of the line VW Jetta and an Audi A6 (I compared the two since VW owns Audi).
I do not particularly like Apple given previous experience with their products (breaking within a year and the company refusing to fix it under warranty) however I do not have blind hatred for them. They are innovative (to a point) and sell aesthetically pleasing computers, but I do not think their computers are all that superior to other products (especially if you are a linux user).
[–]boondocktaints -10 points-9 points-8 points 1 year ago*
Who make the best phone of all time ever. That every other company has been trying desperately, blatantly and tragically to emulate since 2007. They completely changed the face of the most pervasive mobile device on the planet. Other than that, sure, dipshits, why not. EDIT** Since my argument kees being voted into invisibility, leaving only this above, I'm copying and pasting it on to this: Well, let's short list some of the more blatant pretenders to the throne. T-Mobile offers the Tap, the G1, the Motorola CLIQ, The myTouch, the Behold and the Touch Pro2. Some may have a keyboard slidden away somewhere, which makes them clunky as hell. They still try and sell of the iPhone feel. Here's some AT&T offerings: The Pure+-+Navy&qsku=sku4000289), The Incite, the G60+G60&qsku=sku4000279), the Solstice+(A887)+(Refurbished)&qsku=sku4160298), the Impression+-+Blue+(Refurb)&qsku=sku3890283), the Mythic&qsku=sku4380259), and the Arena&qsku=sku4380253). Verizon has the Omnia, the super hilarious BlackberryStorm, the Diamond, the Eris, the Omnia II, the Pre, the Imagio and the Droid. So that's only three companies and what they are offering RIGHT NOW. Think of all the other sad attempts at iPhonery. And all the other cell companies. The iPhone did/does it the best all around, and 95% of the reviews are there with it. Credit where it is due, s'all I'm saying. *Edit - It doesn't like some of the formatting, but I suspect it simply won't.
[–]loudambiance 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago
I assure you that it is not the best phone of all time, that is a completely subjective view point. To me, it is a complete piece of shit because of lockin, no multitasking, and communist like control of the appstore. I would rather own a flip phone from 2004 than an iPhone.
[–]msprout 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
But... flip phones also have lockin, no multitasking, a communist-like control of the app store.
[–]timeshifter_ 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
But they don't masquerade themselves as the do-all devices of 2008+. They're phones, advertised as phones, sold as phones, used as phones, and have a few extra things they can do, just because. The iPhone is advertised as the last mobile device you'll ever need, and it most certainly is not.
[–]mensrea 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
... and it most certainly is not.
Says you. I haven't bought a new phone, camera, iPod or UMPC since I got my first iPhone. Prior to that I spent thousands every year on all of the above.
Prior, I got a new WiMo phone twice a year. A new MP3 player every year. A new camera at least once every 18 months.
I have a successful law practice. Technology is key to my success. I can control all of my computers from my phone, dictate (Dragon and DictatePro), 'scan' and fax documents, calendar from court, do legal research, book travel, know which gate my plane will leave from without looking at the boards in the airport, pay bills, transfer money, read a book, listen to a book, watch a movie, find a movie, post on Reddit.
I want it faster with more memory, a front facing camera, a projector and a few other things but let me tell you buddy, they fucking nailed it. Whether you like it or not.
Your experience is not representative. When someone makes something that's better, I'll buy it.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Every comment in this thread including the original poster is a subjective point of view. When it comes to Apple - a lot of geeks go completely irrational. Your comment is proof of that.
[–]loudambiance 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Irrational? I have very rational reasons for disliking the iTouch line of devices. They do not suit my needs, and furthermore users are treated in such a way (via the appstore) that I find morally object-able.
Edit: I should premise that by saying I own/use Mac's and love them, and I also love my 5g iPod, I just have issues with Apple, the iTouches and the Appstore.
[–]elburto 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
All phones ever =/= Phones available in the U.S.
Seriously, I'm often shocked at the phones you guys have available to you, I'd have rejected most of them in 1999.
Just because the fruitiPhone is the best thing Stateside, that's far from a recommendation to get it. It'd be like going back to communist East Germany and bragging about how great your Trabant is.

My 120GB Zune keeps the Apple away.
[–]arrgh406 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Zune HD.

A good site for reviews of non-Apple music/video players. Personally I like the Sansa Fuze and Clip Plus.
[–]m-p-3 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Depends of what you want to do with it.
If you want something similar to an iPod Touch, you could consider the Archos 5 with Android.
[–]devolute 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Any S60 Nokia phone. I have an iPhone but I use my S60 for music, because with a SD card it rocks, and submits stuff to last.fm as I plod along.
I also use it for calls and txts and email tbh, but that's another matter.
[–]Aikidi 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Zune is good. They're all fine choices really.
[–]Klink-a-dink-dink 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
A hacked iPod.
Seriously, find an old 80GB video and put rockbox on it. It's amazing.
[–]nekoniku 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I have a hot-rodded iPod Mini. The battery died after 3 years and so did the inboard 6GB hard drive after 4 years. Now it sports a large-capacity battery and 16GB solid state CF card for storage. Don't really need rockbox so haven't taken the plunge. It's fun to keep "obsolete" technology running.
[–]jmikola 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I put Rockbox on my old i-River HP-120 years ago back when it was in beta. Looks like it's progressed nicely since then.
Does installing Rockbox on an iPod let you use it as a simple USB storage device (no need to sync or anything like that)? That's one of the things I missed about the HP-120 (with or without Rockbox) - it showed up just like an external HD.
[–]Klink-a-dink-dink 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Indeed it does!

Not too long ago, I impulse-bought a cheapo Emerson MP3 player from Big Lots. It doesn't have a pretty display, and it certainly doesn't do things like play games, but it does play a surprising variety of formats (including FLAC and OGG). Most shockingly, though, it has gapless playback.
It all depends on the features you want. If you just want to be able to listen to your audio files, there's plenty of barebones options for under $20. If you want something prettier, then get any of the players listed on this page and install Rockbox posthaste.
[–]Purp 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
No, of course not. What are you going to do, get a Zune? Lol
[–]b0dhi 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago*
It depends on what you use it for. If you will listen to music while being active, it's hard to do better than a Cowon iAudio 7. It's tiny, goes up to 16GB, is solid state and has fantastic audio quality. And the battery lasts longer than you will believe. I've forgotten mine on Play and found it 3 days later, still playing and plenty of batter. Also, it has more configuration options than a linux .conf file.
A cheaper but still excellent option is the Sansa Fuze, which has a memory card slot, so you can get 16+32 GB of solid state capacity on it. Battery life is not as good though. Still much better than an iPod however. Both of these play practically every music format out there except Apple.
On the other hand, if you want a ginormous amount of disk space and don't mind a hard drive, there are many good options, but battery life will suffer.
[–]ashadocat 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
The archos 5 is a very nice alternative to the touch. runs wince android and ubuntu. costs 200$ with free shipping and handling on dealextreme.
[–]kabdib 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
120GB Zune. I'm really happy with it.
[–]clone00 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Check out the new samsung players. Any of them. They do video. They have a propritary format for vid but they release the code so you can do your own conversions for free. The high end ones are all tsd. And they can all be addressed as a standard USB device. ( no propritary syncing software although you can use their mediaanager or iTunes if you choose to). I have a YP-P2 and I love it

Creative Zen or Microsoft Zune, both are far superior products to iPods
[–]Baramin 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I'm surprised not to see any mention of Archos stuff in here.
I've been using a good old 160GB Archos 504 for about 4 years and I really happy with it. I suppose their new equipments are even better.
[–]isankit 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
When I was researching Archos (looking for Android-tablet functionality, not just media playing), I read that you have to pay for outrageous, small things. Like you have to buy the web app in order to buy the music playing app, buy the video playing app, etc. etc. etc. I wasn't sure whether these reviews were talking about Android, or perhaps some earlier Archos devices ran a proprietary OS - I could never make heads or tails of it and I read so many scathing reviews that I just gave up.
Can you offer any enlightenment on the subject of this supposed microeconomy model? I know that Android has many, many apps for free, and that if it simply runs Android things like a web browser should also be free, but is there some sort of built-in catch?
[–]mrpappy 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Creative Zen 32GB.
I've had mine for over a year with no trouble. Plug and play, works like a memory stick so you can take music from any computer without installing any drivers. Plus it has a SD card slot for an extra 16GB storage :)
[–]fireflash38 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I'm still using my old Creative Zen Vision:M 30GB, it works great. Only complaint is it takes a bit long on a cold start up and it's about the size of a deck of cards (kinda big).
[–]Mythrilfan 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
You obviously mean the Sansa Clip Plus.

My Ipod alternative: Nintendo DS + r4
[–]shimshimmaShanghai 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
mine: a PSP lol. always wondered what the big fuss was about ipods, expensive, not that great to use, fragile and poor battery performance, not to mention its rare to hear of anyone owning one for over a couple of years - my psp is on its 5th year now and still rocking solid
[–]LeonGrey 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I've been wondering this lately, too. I've always been satisfied with the iPod enough, but now it's glaring at me from my desk as the only Apple thing I own. Granted, I only buy used; effectively, apple doesn't really get money from my purchases.
I realized today that I can't put FLAC files into iTunes. Fuck that. Converting my perfectly fine lossless files into Apple's lossless file is fucking dumb. I should be able to put the FLAC files into iTunes and put them straight onto my iPod.
Anyway, the most important part of owning my iPod is I use it as a car jukebox. It holds all of my music, and plugs directly into my stereo, giving me song names, playback control, and the ability to select music straight from the stereo. I am completely unwilling to give this up, does anyone know if there are similar systems for other music players / car stereos out there?

My Blackberry Curve 8900 has better sound then my iPod Touch had, hence why the Touch just sold on Ebay 2 weeks ago.
[–]daggity 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
For a music/podcast device, I like my classic Zune. Has 120 GBs of storage, but it's discontinued now. You may be able to find them floating around. The Zune Software isn't too bad, I've heard people often say it's better than iTunes.
For a handheld computer type device (iPhone), the Nexus One is utterly amazing. Expensive, a cheaper alternative to that is the Droid, which looks alright.
The Droid isn't really cheaper when you consider that it comes with a 2 year Verizon contract.
[–]giveitago 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Every time I consider buying an iPhone I think about those bumper stickers that say, stay out of my uterus. Steve Jobs thinks he should have a cut of everything I do on the phone. I think I buy the phone but apparently I only leased it. Sorry man, no deal.
[–]Guest101010 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
The only problem that I had with Zune is that it wouldn't run on 64-bit windows xp, but now that I'm on 7 that's not an issue anymore.
[–]cowboy_dan 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago

Probably the best is something Sandisk with a MicroSD slot, it supports all kinds of formats, can be used as a USB mass storage device (yay Linux etc), and the interface is decent enough.
[–]derekaw 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
There are a few good MP3 players out there but will they automatically sync and download your podcasts etc?
[–]dafunk60 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I stopped using my iPod because of iTunes. It is just so damn slow when you have 20,000+ songs in it, but the zune software & even wmp can handle a library of that size without issue.
These days I listen to music on my phone, I am carrying it around anyway. I can listen to the it in the car via bluetooth. I have a HTC Touch Pro 2 with a 16gb micro SD card.
I realize that 16gb is only 10% the capacity of the new iPods but I honestly don't need every song in my library at my finger tips at all times.
When I get tired of what is on the phone I just load up some new material.
I also use ORB so I can stream anything from my collection to my devices.
[–]ramijames 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I bought a Sony Walkman with 8gb storage and absolutely love it. It plays for 12hours without a charge (at least!) and windows sees it just as a regular disk drive and I can organize it by folder, just like I want. It's a pretty slick device. My only gripe is that the time is hard to get at, but.. meh. :)

This does not make sense, you don't explain why you dislike Apple. Anyway, I am not an Apple fanboy, but I think they make one of the best (if not the best) portabile music player out there. I love my 4y/o iPod 60GB, sure, it has minor quirks (no "Now Playing" playlist), but it's as solid as a rock.
For the record I bought a Sansa Fuze for my girlfriend and it's nice, but the firmware has few annoying bugs (upgrading it solves the most). It works flawless with Linux. If you need a small <16GB player, go for it.
[–]devperson -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
The Sony mp3 players are excellent. I have one that has since been refreshed (its only about 2 years old). They bundle with really decent headphones, and imo have far better sound production than their ipod counterparts. Just to put this into context, I'm not an Apple hater, I have an iPhone, but I still use the Sony to listen to music.
[–]internet_ambassador 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
the sony software is shit, but there are good 3rd party programs out there that can do your file tagging just dandy. The digital walkman was my mp3 player of choice for many years (the ipod couldn't offer me anything new for it's price).
[–]quraid 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago

What are you looking for? I have a Creative Zen Vision: M, that I got three years ago when it was comparable to the ipods at the time. It 100% fits my needs, although I don't think they sell them anymore.
Just figure out what you want in an mp3 player, there are other ones out there.
I have one as well, but in this day and age I wouldn't recommend it purely because of the size/UI.
4 years ago when I bought mine? Sure as hell I would recommend it.
Yeah, I wasn't recommending it for now. But at the time it fit my needs. I'm not in the market for a new mp3 player so I don't keep up to date on whats available - just think about the features that are important to you.
I had an M ... then I mowed the lawn and the vibration nuked the hard drive.
